I read her codex entry...so what? You don't f@ck with family. The lack of an option to kill him is the biggest disappointment in the game. My first playthrough I killed templars every chance I got. He was a dick in every conversation we had...who the hell acts all friendly to you after kidnapping and imprisoning your freakin sister? Then he tries to openly kill her via the ROA??? THEN HE COMES AT ME AFTER I SAVE HIS SORRY ASS FROM GIANT WALKING STATUES?!?! I'm telling you...y'all are insane for liking this douche.

Well, if you read it then you'd know that Bethany wonders if life in the Circle is really so bad. So she may have turned herself in willingly - not exactly kidnapping. She writes to you saying she's doing well in the Circle at some point, too.

I admit, my blood boiled when I saw him take Bethany away as well, but not enough to condemn Cullen. :) As for the Right of Annulment, he was just following orders. He defies Meredith in the end, though; that should say something about his character.

They don't want the game ending six years before it's supposed to, that's why you can't kill him.

You're not Superman (or Wonder Woman, as it may be) Hawke at that point in the game, you're just some refugee who can swing a sword better than average and has lucked into some gold. All attacking him is going to accomplish is getting Hawke killed.

As for the Right of Annulment...you need to play the Mage ending, son.

EDIT: Also, protip: MAKE BETH A WARDEN.

If you sided with the Mages then KC-Greagoir waits for confirmation from FE- Irving that the tower has been cleansed of all abominations and tells his Templars to stand down.    So no, he wasn't left in charge of the Fereldan Circle as only a KC can assume that role.

I imagine If he had been in charge he would have massacred all the mages in the tower regardless of what the Warden did.   What makes Cullen so loathsome is his amoralistic attitude.  It's not about right or wrong with him, it's about following his brainwashed code no matter what.   He has to see Meredith on the verge of genocide before he chooses to act.  People like that sicken me.

It's like Wesley on the road escaping Lothering.   He's been mortally injured, darkspawn are about to kill him and his wife Aveline..............and the only thing that comes to his lyrium addicted mind after he's been rescued by the Hawke family is KILL THE APOSTATE.

Cullen was actually somewhat friendly to mages before Uldred's incident. If you chose the mage origin in DAO he says he doesn't like to kill mages.

So, his decision to act against Meredith is more leaving behind his traumas and going back to his old self rather than being the first time he decides to abandon the extreme templar point of view.

And, even if he was late to realize what was wrong and what was right, still late is better than never! :P

Cullen saw the utter worst case mage scenario, within one year of becoming a templar - it's hardly surprising he was traumatised by events at Kinloch Hold. What I love about the character is his sense of development. The bit where Meredith asks him whether he's willing to take responsibility for hidden blood mages survival (his argument to Gregoir) and he says that's what being a Templar is all about was absolutely amazing. Felt like he'd spent 7 years thinking about it, about what he'd been through and what his duty was, and had found himself and his answer. Possibly the most growth in any character in the series, I reckon.

With regards to DAO epilogue, I thought they were "rumours", i.e. Bioware will happily change them if they find something they prefer.

It would actually be cool to have him as a companion in DA 3 and get to develop his character even more.
EDIT: This thread has made me and a lot of other people realize how well written he is. He's a good character.

Cullen is different for the same reason Anders is different. BioWare decided to take him in a different direction for sake of the "story"

it's the same reason why Anders doesn't die at Vigils Keep if that happened in Awakenings..or why Leliana is still alive even if you killed her at the urn.

hand waving and character changes. The little dialogue you got about Cullen going crazy? didn't happen. Just like Anders/Leliana didn't die.

Sorry, but Cullen would get his ass whipped by a dragon. Hawke killed dragon, multiple ogres, legions of darkspawn, and hundreds of people and undead...Cullen's done what...killed a few mages with help from a company of sissy templars? Sorry, bro, but Cullen is a douche. You act like his turning on Meredith is some epiphany. He didn't actually DO anything. He defended himself from what looked to him like blood magic, then he turned his sword at Hawke, prompting Hawke's self-imposed exile. I fail to see the appeal. Cullen and DA2 Anders should go start a club for douches and flog each other.
