So does the sibling fie based on what class you chose, or what sex you chose? My initial playthrough was female rogue, and Carver died, while I just started my second playthrough as male mage, and Bethany dies.

Its on class if your a rogue or warrior Carver will always die, if your a mage Bethany will die.

2 mages (1 off 1 def) Merril/Anders
2 warrior (1 off 1 def) Fenris/Aveline
Hawks (1 mana 1 energy) You energy/Beth mana ......... You mana/Carver energy
Optionals: Carver is a warrior, Beth a mage, Sebastian a rogue.

All is balance
