I would like to design a new sword to put into the game. Im wondering what programs i would need? Do i need a program like Blender?

Yes. You'll need 3D modelling software, Blender being the free example. BioWare made thier models using 3DS max.



The only issue at this point is getting it from the 3D modeller to the in-game format. I know some community members are working on solving this, but I don't know how long it'll be before this takes off.

XSI modtool might also be a possibility - some people find it easier to use than Blender.

I use AC3D myself. It's not free, (even then it's only about 20 bucks or so for a license) but the interface is pretty easy.
