Im currently about 24hours in and am pulling my hair out over lockpicking.  I am having good/bad experiences like many. My question is, how do you increase (varrick in this case) lockpicking skills.  I have scanned thru the abilities for the rogue but am strugglin with this point. What does the game use for picking ability? Cant do anything with difficult chests and cant seem to see anything about picking tools/skills etc (maybe i cant see the wood for the trees) but would appreciate advice

Lockpicking is based directly off cunning this time. Every 10 points in cunning (10,20,30 and 40) rogues can open more difficult chests. In general aim for at least 20 for Act I, 30 for Act II and 40 for Act III and you should be fine.

I think it is based on cunning. 20 for standard, 30 for complex, and I'm guessing 40 for the ones in act 3, but I wouldn't know because I am not there yet.

Yeah, took me until Act 3 to figure that one out, traps and locked chests really did a number on me...

There are some chests requiring level 40 cunning already in Act 2.

The Lockpicking System is only available to Rogue characters and requires a sufficient level of Cunning to successfully open a given lock. The Cunning required increases as the lock becomes more difficult.

There are also some rare items that increase your lockpicking skill, which should be of great value to any rogue who comes upon them.

Thanks for the replies guys! Feel a bit daft now lol! Just finished my 1st playthru and will add that it was on a 50" HDTV but as I am not sat right on top of it, struggled with so much writing which did appear quite small. My main points of complaint were needless change in journal and txt size (Bioware this seemed the case in ME2 too, ME1 was perfect size!). Anyway, found the art of war section of the codex, eventually, and the cunning points system is explained there. You do get the 40cun req chests in act 2 though? Thanks everyone!

What is the max level of cunning needed to pick locks? I keep bring rogues that sometimes don't have a high enough cunning, and it's frustrating since there's no way to know if they're high enough or too low.

As mentioned above, I believe it's 10 for Simple, 20 for Normal, 30 for Complex, and 40 for Master. This goes for traps as well.

The belt you can loot in Act 2 appears to boost it a whole grade, allowing Varric to open master chests with 30 cunning.

Here is the real question. Is there anything in the chests that is worth me allocating so many of the limited attribute points into cunning--rather than Dexterity, constitution and willpower?? I'd rather have a rogue that can fight and stay alive rather than pick locks that are mostly unnecessary.

There is a dagger in Act 1 that provides a lockpick boost as well.

So there are at least 2 items, meaning with 20 cunning you should be able to open Master locks by the end of Act 2.

Also, if you have Devious Harm, each point you put into cunning increases your crit damage.

I really do have to agree with you both here. What a waste of time (and cunning points) for a pair of torn trousers and other junk! Not impressed by the loot as a whole. What a shame. Looting, i.e finding a bigger better sword, better armour, sharing with your team, all Gone. To me the best bits of RPGing are looting, and sorting better kit. Mass effect = gone Dragon Age = Gone.

I dont see what the big deal is. You should have at least one rogue in your party anyways, and all rogues should be pumping cunning anyways.

yeah, cunning is the best way to deal damage with a rogue anyway.

Also, i think people forgot how much worse the looting was in DA:O. There *never* was any interesting items there.
