Is there some sort of ranking on the materials, like in DA:O? What materials are there? I've noticed at least that onyx is new. What's the order of quality?

Item Materials in Dragon Age 2 are purely cosmetic.

We decided to go down this route to avoid limiting the player to one material choice at end-game (ie: all of your armor was Dragonbone at the end of Origins.) As implied, there is no ranking to how they drop as well.

I understand the reasoning, but dislike the results.  I personally like trying to obtain highest-tier weapons and armor.  Also, for OCDers like me, being able to compare apples to apples helps with donning choices.

Well, as someone who played DA enough to wish for more varied appearances in high level gear, I appreciate the change. That, and it seemed like Dragons should have gone extinct with all the gear being fashioned out of them. Good lord.

@Em: Doesn't making material irrelevant make it easier to compare gear? You just have to look at the stats, and not what it is made of.

The problem is I always second-guess how armor X can be statistically better when armor Y's material sounds so much better.  I could have tin foil armor that gave me +5 to each attribute and + 100 health, but it's still listed as tin foil.  Who wants to wear tin foil?  Extreme example, perhaps, but it gets my point across.

That's fine, but isn't a little ironic that at the end of DA2 you limit the player to one armor set choice by end-game?

Of course you don't have  to wear the Champions' armor, just as well as you didn't have  to wear Dragonbone aromor, but what is the point if you do not.

I know you guys didn't have as much time as you would've liked in creating armor (I am assuming) but an ideal situation would of been to be able to allow the player to choose from a multiple amount of sets that could be better tailored to their character build(s). And yes of course there are sets, but none that stack up to the 'Champions'.

On a plus side, I thought all the armor, including mage hoods, were infinitely better designed and varied than in Origins.

Was it really necessary to coddle the player into 1 armor set at endgame?

Having multiple armor sets 'coddles' players? It is a game in which your motivation should be the enjoyment of.

I don't see how the champion's armor is in any way related to materials. I think it was a good idea to get rid of the material scaling. If you're going to give information to the player directly, such as what tier an armor is, it's better to do it through strictly meta-information channels such as the stars on equipment. Having all the armors and swords dropped by anyone being made out of dragonbone, a material that almost only kings can afford, is unnecessarily breaking the setting.

Its relevant because the dev said they removed item tiers so that at endgame you would have more choice than the one uber-set of dragonbone but then went ahead and made an uber-set that everyone that cares about stats gets at endgame, thus contradicting themselves at least in endgame, though not in the journey there I guess.

I'm a PS3 player, and I was wondering where information like this is located. I was curious if the material mattered, as well as whether or not there are different kinds of armor (i.e. heavy vs light) but the game does not seem to present this information in a clear enough manner.

Personally, I don't really care that they "coddle" us into one armor choice at endgame: the Champion set looks epic, and although I do wish my female Mage Hawke wasn't as flat-chested (it seems like her cleavage got burned off killing the High Dragon or something!), and I for one am happier that they took the time to make THE end-game armor set look as good as it does, as opposed to complaining that I can't wear two-part nun hoods instead.

No, I don't like any of the other Mage armor other than the Mantle of the Champion. Can you tell? ;)

Have you taken a look at the battlemage armor? It's fairly decent looking. Pity that it's stats are ****
I also kinda like the robes of unblemished cleanliness.

The rest of the mage "armor" (read: robes) are one of 2-3 different (and bad) skins. :(

I agree.  I am an avid Rogue Archer and the armor type would affect your attack speed in DA:O and Awakening, is this not the same in DA2?  Not to presume of course, but logically i would guess the answer to be No.  But, I would like to actually hear/see the true answer for myself from a Devs mouth/fingers directly.
