My current Strategy revolves on having a Tank gather enemies to him and to have Isabela and Merrill teleport next to the Tank (Back to Back and Merrill's equivalent) to exploit Isabela's Dueling skills and Merrill's Wrath of the Elven, Lighting Spells, and Wounds of the Past. I'm an Elementalist Spirit Healer who throws AoEs too and Heals when needed.

But would be better at Tanking at this, Fenris or Aveline? What would be the best build for him/her?

P.S. I am not on Nighmare so my Elemental Spells or the Tank's AoEs are no worries.

I say Fenris. He may not be Sword and Board, but that actually works in his favor. A Tank needs to keep Threat, and to do that, you need to be able to cause damage. Aveline is great from a defensive standpoint, but can't really cause significant damage, so she has a harder time keeping threat. Fenris, on the other hand, is all about damage, so throw him Taunt and Bravery, and let him work the rest out as a damager, and you should have a pretty solid Tank.

I chose Aveline because she is a high defense / high HP character. It has been said that you really don't need a "tank" class in your party make-up but it is still a good choice to have in your group. My party make up is with two tanks - Hawke is the main tank, Aveline is the 2nd tank. Then I have two ranged DPS who can both heal. I tried using Fenris, but I found I had to heal him more often and fights lasted longer. My two tank strategy works well because it helps me gather all the badguys into one spot so both my ranged DPS can unleash their AOEs on them doing massive damage.

I've chosen Aveline both playthroughs

Why? Despite Fenris' ability to cleave through trash mobs, he's (to me) so much worse than Aveline on anything that is difficult (I've played on Hard both times as well). Similarly, I've always had an issue with Fenris getting knocked down and/or around whereas Aveline can eat knockdowns because of her passive abilities, which leads Aveline to being more reliable for both threat (yes, I said it) and being able to actually use potions/skills when it'll save her instead of being on her ass.

Aveline only needs 5-7 points towards mitigation/survival talents, the rest can be dumped into damage/support talents.

I have used him for a few quest, with his unique Upkeep, plus me using Heroic Aura, he is decent at dogding for now. Dunno if it will keep doing well.

I have Fenris with Battle Synergy and Lyrium Ghost, he's still not as tough as Aveline, but he holds aggro much better.
