Do you mean not help him plant the bomb, or not help him get the ingrediants?
Because I got the ingrediants, but didn't help him plant the bomb.
Chantry still went boom.

I don't know for sure but shooting in the dark I'd say he would just find somebody else to help him with it

I can't exactly remember with what you have to help him. But for sure the first quest since it is a main quest. So you can assume he is blowing it up anyway. Bioware forces a main quest on you whenever they want you to do something. Like helping Anders.

Except that's establishing half your reason for questing at the start of the game before you're important. Plus neither of them are companions.

Except for the part where you can force Loghain to become a Grey Warden after you defeat him in a duel. Or did you mean neither of them are companions at that time?

I didn't do any of the personal quest for Anders and the chantry still exploded.

It always happens - the only thing you can change is how much of a role you played in it. Heck, I even let Anders die in my Awakening game and he still showed up in Kirkwall as a "former" Warden. His role is important enough that your personal game narrative will bow to it.
The plot is rather linear. But hey, it's still cool.

This aspect of the plot is linear. Same as whether you get all the nobles on your side or not, Loghain will still lose the Landsmeet. Anders nuking that Chantry was the most important moment in all Thedas history, they're not going to let you change it.

I did not even help him, I avoided his abomination butt.
It still went boom. And I finally got to kill him.
