Rock Armor is the only non Mage specific armor you need.  Putting points into strength is also a waste when there's Unshakable.

You're right about Unshakeable, but if you have lower level mage armor (because of avoiding Willpower) and Rock Armor you only have like 160-170 total armor at most. With Act 3 heavy armor you can have nearly 500 armor, and health boosts to offset the lack of extra points in Constitution (Chains of the Vaarad, for example, itself gives +44 Health).

It's true that you'll end up having slightly less Magic, but the other advantages plus the aesthetic bonus of being able to wear cool stuff offsets it for me.

Chains of the Vaarad requires  27 strength, that's 17 over the base, and it's only 254 armor. 17 strength would convert into 85 health, not the 44 on this.  And the armor already requires 27 CON.  Definitely a waste of stats when you still need at least 38 Magic for the best staves and you really are going to want the final unique Mage Robes, Blood Mage or no.  Nothing can compete with it.  Wear heavy if you enjoy the asthetics or whatever it is you think you gain from it, but from a surviability/casting standpoint, they don't offer anything over going naked as a character who is primarily in range and has multiple ways to avoid taking damage.

but would it really have been too much to ask to have the mages look cool when blood magic is active?  I seem to remember being coated in shadowy flames and actually LOOKING like I might have breakfast with demons in DA:O, but in DA2 it just looks like I'm wearing a poly-blend bathrobe that looks sort of red if you really squint your eyes...   just saying...

get the champions armor in act 3 ( as a male hawk)  use your rock armor from the primal  tree and then pop your blood magic to active and get in combat, loosk really awesome imo :P

but yea i get your point, in origins it looked alot more evil ^-^   and isn't that what we wanna be as a bloodmage :innocent:
