I know we can filter groups and projects by date created, but it would be nice if there was a block on the left or right main page showing maybe the last five or ten new projects/groups created.

Once this site becomes busy, news feed will scroll past and the new creation will be missed. There are already several new projects I didn't know existed.

Even now with a relatively small number of people it is already a problem. On Friday, for example, when I was uploading all my bug images I apologised for the spam it was because the "recent news" was only covering the last 4 hours and I felt partly responsible.

If you are the sort of person that can or does only log in a couple of times a day you are going to miss a lot of "news".

Probably my second biggest fear right now (after the privacy stuff not working and details of our projects spilling out into the community) is that once the floodgates open the site will simply become unusable. Part of this is due to the fact that I can only control what type of feeds I see and not who I see feed from.  For example I can block blog posts and comments but that blocks all blog posts and all blog comments.  When in fact all I want to see when the blogs I've subscribed (if I've subscribed to any) have been updated.

The irony is that because I don't want to miss the stuff I'm interested in I have to leave all the feed types open which means I'm going to the stuff I'm interested in!

I want control! I need control!! Give me control!!!

I am pretty sure that once the crowd shows up, "recent news" will be utterly unusable, for the reasons you just described.

Right now, there are a little over 300 users of the site, although most seem inactive - there are 42 people in the beta tester group, and most of the current activity seems to be from around 30 of those.

Now imagine what things will be like with, maybe 3000 people, or even more. We will see some changes on Tuesday, once the site opens, but the real change will be in November when we will be flooded with people who have just bought the game.

I would like to be able to filter things so that I see anything related too people on my friend list, groups and projects I am interested in, and maybe announcements of new projects and new groups .... but the filtering feature is somewhat limited - I can't get exactly what I want, so I fear that once the site opens up, I will not even bother to check the "recent activity".

Even "friends" isn't entirely reliable since if you are a group owner or officer you have to friend people to invite them into the group. Hopefully that will change but in the meantime it's not outside the realms of possibility that you have a bunch of people on your friends list that you don't really want to here about outside of the current project.

My suggest would be to have "who" categories such as:

  • BioWare (official announcements, dev posts, dev blogs, etc)
  • me (do I really want to see what I'm doing?)
  • my subscriptions
  • my friends
  • my friends' friends
  • my groups
  • my group members
  • my group member's friends
  • my subnetwork
  • registered users
  • everyone
And this makes a matrix of checkboxes with the current "what" categories.

Unfortunately Jesse has said this can't happen because of the nasty SQL he's presumably inherited from the Social Engine software.

The question is then what can be done to improve the problem we might see soon. Are there any (relatively simple) changes that can be made, which would help in cutting down on the (potential) spam?

At any rate, it will be interesting to see what happens in a few days.

Apparently the news feed is unreliable as well, Sunjammer first reply is the only one listed on the Whats new.

EDIT
And this one, but I don't see Sunjammers second reply, and I don't see Adinos's reply on the news feed.

I still want a "My Topics" links like the NWN bioware site has, None of the other sites I belong to and post in have this and it is a pain to keep track of where the post went and if someone replied.

Most of them use email notification but this seems to crap out after 2 or 3 replies.

the recent news tab currently shows posts only from your friends and your subnetwork (builders, players, or general). If the site is popular enough, we will tweak it so that it shows only posts from your friends, which should slow things down sufficiently.

These forums already have a "my subscribed topics" feature - you can get to it from the dropdown at the top of the forums. Projects and groups also support subscriptions, wehich you can get at from the respective "browse" pages as well. :)

Yes, but that means every time I log in, and every so often there after, I must goto Forums, and select "my subscibed topics" to see if anyone replied. With no indication on the home page that anyone has replied, I can't simply refresh the page.

Example in point, I didn't know you replied to this post - I just happend to scroll down enough and noticed it in the news feed. Was just hoping for sometype front page indication.
