Mostly it's the women in my party that I can't figure out. Whenever I'm nice to Merrill, agree with her, and/or let her do what she wants she slaps me with a swack of rivalry points. Aren't you supposed to get rivalry points if you oppose that companion's views?

And Isabela, who freed a ship-full of slaves, hit me with rivalry points for agreeing to help Fenris... an escaped slave. Maybe Isa was lying and she harbors a secret hatred for slaves...?

Aveline is the worst offender in my party. She dishes out the friend/rivalry points left and right for the weirdest things.

The men are so much easier... Fenris: Mages = BAD, Anders:  Templars and Mages who make things harder for everyone (then why do that spoilery thing you'll do later?) = BAD, Varric: SNARK AND BEER! WOO HOO!

I had a horrible time with everyone except Anders, Varric and Merrill. Fenris kept on quite happily flip-flopping between friendship and rivalry.

I'm having the same problem with Merrill...Im the nicest I can possibly be to her and she hits me with rivalry? What gives?

You cant please them all... well Varric seems to stick by you no matter what you do. I chose Anders side all the time and constantly got rival points with Sebastian, Fenris, Carver.. >_< damn you Ander

Forget about pleasing them all, I'm having problems keeping any one of them happy individually. The thought of trying to keep them all happy at once just... *head explodes* lol

By the end of my first playthrough I had max friendship with everyone except Fenris and Carver.

Carver is just impossible! Like no matter what I say his rival goes up. And he's so mean to Anders ;o;

Carver is a prat. He's the only companion I don't bother to try and make happy. He just grates on me.

I did ok...tho Aveline took forever, and I never got fenris all the way to the top friendship.
