Was that before or after you meet Nathanial? I forget. Could have something to do with that.

Investigating whatever Morrigan's been up to or perhaps something the Architect is doing/left unfinished

Running away before Wardens get the same treatment as the other companions.

Nothing - it's gratuitous Alistair cameo if he was neither made King nor became a drunk. If he remained a Grey Warden, the talking one is him.

I assume, anyway.

They're looking for 'The Warden' - be it the orlesian warden (if your warden died/you didn't play awakening), or "The hero of Ferelden".

He, or she, has disappeared. Unless they're the king/queen of Ferelden.. then they haven't yet disappeared. ;p

Do you see him in the Hanged Man if he's not a drunk?

Remember, there are 3 possible Alistair endings:

1.  He leaves to become a drunk (you find him in the Hanged Man)
2.  He becomes King of Ferelden (He apparently shows up to chat with Hawke)
3.  He remains a Grey Warden (which is why I think that appearance is this scenario's cameo).

No reason for them not to stay and fight with you otherwise, is there?

They had no purpose there at all, that I could see.  The whole "very important matter" is, IMO, just there to excuse them leaving and not staying.  Adds up to intended Alistair cameo, I think.

Actually, I was just told that if you chose the Grey Warden ending for Alistair, then this IS his cameo.  So, there we go.

They're in search of DLC content  ;)

Honestly though, this will probably come up in a planned DLC or DA3.

Don't forget Wardens avoid political affairs like the plague.  That move has screwed them over in the past.

but.....the fact remains, why leave the wardens in on the stories where Alistair makes a different cameo.....unless! they wanted it to be heard by all, as it has some level of importance... hmm

I might have heard wrong, but I was under that if Hawke's sibling became a Grey Warden, they temporarily reappeared at this scene.

The warden disappeared no matter what he was , king or no . When you hear about him in act 3 he is still here . Either he is king  queen or just hero of ferelden . But when cassandra asked varric about the champion its 3 years after act 3 and both the warden and Hawke disappeared . Coincidence ? I THINK NOT !!

I had the Grey Warden scenario. I think that will be the one used in DA:III. He's most likely searching for the Hero of Ferelden/Morrigan or conducting some business with the Architect.

The Architect could very well be dead, and sure as hell is in all my games.

Really, I think people are reading too much into this, IMO.  The Grey Wardens are there because they are the third Alistair cameo scenario.  They are on an important mission so there is no possibility of them staying to help you fight, as they're not meant to be even temporary companions.  They are there even if one is not Alistair (meaning you got one of the other cameos) simply because the part was already written.  It's just filler if it's not an Alistair cameo.

I doubt there's any deep meaning to this.

I think they are refering to the events right before awakening because in act 3 depending on what ending you had, you can run into king alistair and if you became queen he'll mention you which means the warden didnt vanish until after the final battle in DA2. Plus the wardens sound orlesian which could mean there the ones that died at vigils keep

Keep in mind that Flemeth is also doing something. We have no idea what, but she didn't get asked to be taken to Kirkwall just to save her life on the off chance you go back and kill her as a Warder.

I could totally see DA 3 being similar to DA: O and DA 2 in that it's another character's story set around the same time that shows us yet another aspect of what is going in in the world during this tumultuous time. I could further see your new protagonist in DA 3 meeting up with Flemeth shortly after she had left Hawke at Sundermount as she sets yet another stone in motion in whatever grand scheme/story she is fulfilling.

The Wardens show up regardless of whether Alistair's with them, don't they? I recall meeting my brother at some point... :P

I doubt it's too pertinent to the story at hand, but I imagine there may be rumblings of another Archdemon.

When Alistair visits you as king he is there to tell you to protect Kirkwall and he gets yelled at by Meredith. In the save from DA:O I used, my warden would've been queen. So in the end, when the seeker says the champion and the warden were both gone, I thought she was referring to Anders as the warden, since for some crazy reason I actually let that lunatic continue to hang out with me...

There are two "Important matters" that the Wardens show up about. One is if Alistair is king. He's seeking free mages to help in Ferelden.

The other has to do with the relic from the primeval thaig, the one that shows up in Merideth's hands. They're hunting that down because it's a threat.

There's nothing to indicate this that I know of. I got the feeling that Alistair had wanted to ask about something but that having Meredith know he was there derailed it, so he just indicated that he was worried about the situation in Kirkwall. But that was a king thing, not a warden thing. We have no idea what the wardens were doing. It was interesting, though. I wanted to go with Carver.
