Seriously... should I just turn off all tactics?

I'm beginning to think that it might be better to just turn off all tactics altogether and specifically tell each party member what to do specifically ALL THE TIME. Too many times have they gotten to too much trouble. 9 times out of 10, whenever my party encounters a large mob, my healer and ranged dps make a beeline towards the nearest enemy. Hello! you guys are supposed to stay back!

You haven't got them set correctly. Also, some spells have a range that makes your caster run up to either get within range, or clear the line of fire.

When set and working, tactics are the nectar of the gods. You might have to fiddle with them a bit to get them tuned to working correctly in a fight.

So far, Aveline and Hawke's tactics are the best functioning set I have. I need to tweak Varric and Anders a bit more. Sebastian, Isabela and Fenris are also fairly good, but Merrill is making me nuts. She needs more work.

When you make changes, pick a small fight, like a night street scuffle to test out the behavior. I had to change the clustered enemy options in particular to get them to work correctly.

I don't like using tactis, i want to manage all by myself.
Sadly, i unchecked all the boxes in the "custom" set of tactis, but still my warrior randomly stops attacking the main target to run to save my mage, even if he can manage his attacker by himself.
if you discover how to turn off all tactics, please let me know...

Tactics are okay, and work through hard. If your on nightmare like me, its probably best to clear them all and micro manage EVERY move and action. More control = win.

Even clearing all tactics, charachters continue to use them randomly.

I'm fairly new to the dragon age games (i.e dragon age 2 is my first) but I've played plenty of MMO's to know how the party sytstem works. I personally created a tactic for all my characters to attack the tanks target. Then I let them crowd control anything else Elite or Higher. This causes Melee enemies to cluster and ranged enemies usually get controlled. Is this a bad or good idea? Seems to be working!

I think turning off all tactics (on Nightmare) is best. I find managing my party myself is far superior to the tactics system. I also typically place my party on hold, since I got tired of my dumb ass companions running into my AOE spells after I fought the horrible camera to carefully place them.

Yep, Nightmare mode is definitely good at taxing the capabilities of any tactics you've assigned. Custom tactics become an absolute must, and take some experimenting to get to work.

Currently, I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out exactly how to customize Isabella in a manner that will make her more useful... Right now I have to micro-manage her heavily, or she dies pretty quickly.

I'd love if she would automatically try to chain up for Explosive Strike.

I play with no tactics at all and it actually makes the game harder, since it is so fast-paced. I like playing that way though, I just consider tactics like auto-play, plus I hate if I switch to a character to use something and they already used it.

I'm a micromanager and I tried playing with all tactics turned off. I don't think its my imagination, but they still seem to have behaviours independent of this. Like, Varric will always run away from being engaged in melee? It can be annoying if I have something in mind for him standing where he is. I just learned to work with these little things and pop in my own tactics, probably only 2 per character at the moment. I'd recommend turning it all off and starting from the ground up, if you have the patience to learn.

Yeah, there's that too. I did zero tactics all the way through DA:O. This time, I'm a bit more interested in learning the intricate details of the tactics system, and how to program Isabela to actually do what I damn want.

Everyone else has been easy, so far.

If Varric runs away you probably have his behaviour set as ranged. Make sure all partymembers are on passive with no tactics and always keep hold position on, that's what I do on nightmare and they never do anything I don't tell them to.

On Nightmare I use custom tactics, just allowing party members to use talents that won't result in friendly fire.

It's not your imagination, for me, Aveline continues to run away from the main target to charge minor enemies. I think she is still using a tactic like "if Bethany is attacked go save her", even if I deactivated all the stupid tactics.
At inferno, every time Aveline moves without my supervision, she gets a friendly fireball...:pinched:

How odd. (And annoying.)

Following snapin's suggestion above, I tried out passive and default behaviours with hold position on and it helped a lot. I didn't even see that there. You can hover the mouse over behaviours to see how they work.

Yes, disable all tactics, change all behaviors to passive, turn on "HOLD" mode and now you are really in the driver's seat.

However, you may find it convenient to enable one or two tactics that activate certain sustained modes that you plan to activate all the time (e.g., on condition "Self: Any" "Activate" Lyrium Ghost, Shield Defense, Summon Mabari Warhound, etc.)

Why do characters randomly stop attacking, and running BACK to me, when I switch around characters (with tactics off). This is the single most annoying thing. Another terrible thing is how characters will STOP an action you give them, if they are attacked while executing their special skill.

these two things make nightmare so...painful.

No they don't.

Also the only tactics I use is to exploit cross class combos, but I always initiate.

I'll command my Hawke to shield bash, but Merill will always cast chain lightning through tactics.

If you wanna clear all tactics but are having problems it may be best to set one tactic to just attack nearest enemy or somethign similar.  That way they have 1 command.  Also make sure behavior is set correctly.

In Origins tactics seems to have worked out better.  But becasue of the combat style in DA2 and having waves of enemies it is almost better to have totaly control.
