It seems logical for a rogue to choose Athenril and a warrior to choose Meerin but how about a mage? Any particular advantages/disadvantages regarding the side quests they give throughout the game? Thanks.

I believe they're the mercenary/smuggler from the beginning.

Ironically, OP, my warrior chose smuggling and my rogue chose mercenary work.

*Facepalm*

How could I forget, I shame myself.

Well, to answer the OP there is no changes, apart from who gives you the secondary/side quests after the timeskip, the quests themselves are the same however. It just depends on what sort of character you want to play.

Meeran and athenril are the contacts your uncle tell you to go to for a job to get in to Kirkwall in the beginning. Meeran was a contact for a mercenary group and athenril was a contact for a smuggler group. Think there are no Mage centric groups to join cuz there aren't any guilds that are pure Mage and would pay for hawk to enter the city, or atleast to my knowledge.

The real difference is the Rivalry, you get a +10 with Averline going with the smugglers. But you get a -5 if you go with the mercs, which seems odd to me.

Isn't that down to the "initiation" ? Aveline would obviously prefer to shut down a crooked merchant than commit murder.

I guess it's the lesser of two evils, Aveline don't like criminals fullstop.

Actually, I got +10 friendship when I did the smuggler's quest with Aveline. But I let her handle it. That probably helped. Also, Meerin wanted me to kill people later while Athenril wanted me to get her **** back for her. That might influence as to which choice you wish to make.

I went with the smugglers because you have an Aveline prompt that gives +10 friendship, though Carver did love the Red Iron guy. :(

Yeah, I think it only seems to affect character relationships. Otherwise, no real effect other than the type of side quest you get later..

Wait, conflicting info I think. Are the side quests the same or different throughout chapter 1?

Athenril and Meerin gave me different quests. Athenril wanted me to find her missing cargo and any of her people that were still alive. Meerin wanted me to find his men and murder the noble they were supposed to murder.

This is only the 'initation' quest, after that the quests they give you are exactly the same.

No. This is not the initiation quest. It was a quest after the first year during act 1. Meerin wanted me to kill a noble that was helping out Fereldans. Athenril wanted me to get her cargo and any of her men that were still alive. I could choose not to kill the noble and tell Meerin he got away. And I could tell Athenril's underling(who turned out to be a young guy that was trying to look out for his sisters) to take the cargo and sell it and GTFO of Kirkwall. They were completely different quests.

Really? I swore I got the same identical quests from them..might be a glitch.

if you chose Athenril : you get an achievement siding with the smugglers.
if you chose Meerin : you get an achievement siding with the mercenaries.

so side either one of them at first playthrough, then side with the other on the secong playthrough.
get both achievements.

Yeah, but the noble that meerin makes you kill turns out to be one of the few guys who is working to send relief to ferelden. You can let him live and tell meerin you never saw him if you want.

It seems so odd to give you an achievement based on that as it doesn't seem to impact anything other than a single quest afterwards.

So, I did it the other way around, I leave the Gallows with a little over 7 gold (2 from getting the merchant to pay you off, and 5 off of the noble's body). I think that is the most coin. I'll try it again the other way to make sure though.

To me the mercenaries are more hardcore (attitude wise, not gameplay) than the smugglers. If you want the feel of a sword for hire, assassin, etc go with Meeran. If you want more of a black market type of feel go with Athenril.

I remember later on you can get a quest from the mercs to hunt down and kill someone who was sending support to fereldan. if you investiage the dialouge options udring the quest and then refuse to kill him you get like +10 friendship points with varric.
