You get like 5-7 sovereigns or something to start with if you go with Meeran (from looting the body of the guy you kill, I always get to keep that gold) while athenril gets you nothing.

Correct, and if you do Meeran's right you don't lose any rep. There are TONS of places to gain rep with companions, but there is a finite amount of gold in the game.
