The first time I talked to Merril at the beginning of act 3, she mentions she is going to her house in the alienage. I go there, and she is crying about how someone is gone and how the clan will kill her if she goes back. After that, I talk to her again and Varric is there for the "a talking to" quest.
Now the mirror is gone from her home in the alienage. I haven't started "on the loose" so I cannot tell if this will block me from completing "a new path."
Has anyone had this problem and can tell me what effect it has?

I had the same problem. I am hoping that it will be fixed in a patch. Not certain what caused this.

I've had this problem as well, and seen that many other people have it as well. Bioware should have done better testing.
But it can be fixed with console commands, if you can figure out how to use them, I have no idea which codes to type though, also not sure if this prevents any other conversations from happening.

Same here. Ive just finished "A New Path" and can't finish her quest line/romance.

From my play through you can finish the romance if you just keep on trucking on after completing the "A New Path" companion quest. Just go to the Gallows and finish out the game and provided Merrill doesn't leave you, you will finish the romance. I know this because I got the romance achievement. Very underwhelming imho. Bioware needs to bring back the writer that did Viconia's Romance track if anyone can remember back that far. Now there was a good romance.

I've had the same problem. A lot of her quest stuff seems bugged... act 3 also has issues.

EDIT: I was able to start the quest by going to the chantry immediately after "on the loose" to talk to sabastien. The only problem is the mirror isn't there. I'm using a xbox 360, if this helps anyone. I won't be able to continue the quest untill tomorrow, so I'm not sure if the quest is bugged beyond the missing mirror.

i may add to that [playing Mac version] that a new patch cutscenes is ok but i am unable to get "friend or foe" Merrill quest. now i'm struggled a bit cos i do not know did i missed some dialogue cos of lack of the "friend or foe" cos after the path i got just the kiss for the closure and Varric mentioned "everyone leaving Champion except Merrill of course " in the end cutscene [the end end one after which credit goes]
