I am having trouble beating the groups of demons (on hard) guarding the evil tome in the cave on sundermount, anyone tell me how they did it?
I am at level 17, here is what I have tried so far. I can kill quite a few but more keep popping up.

I hand Anders, Aveline, and Merrill. Anders has the ability to a combat rez through his vengance tree. That helped, but overall I didn't find it too hard.

You need to pick the biggest threats such as Arcane Horrors and Shadow Assassins and make everyone attack them by using Ctrl A. That's how I did it. Ignore skeletons at first as they're not the problem.

Hold everyone in the stair way make sure they are at the bottom by the locked door and are on hold postition. Take your character and proceed into the doorway just enough to grab a few red dots then run back down all the way to the lock door that way they follow you down kill them save it and keep doing this to help take some of them down. I just beat it on Nightmare mode this way.

Btw I am a dw rogue I use aveline with a ton of constitution to take damage and have her with shield defense, immovable, and activate stonewall and body guard on my rogue to help him stay alive. Use haste with anders and your warrior will fly make sure he is on paneca healing mode and keep him for healing and reviving. Have fenris help aviline. When too many start to come through keep anders at the bottom of the door thats locked and have your warriors wall the door way to avoid pooling enemies.
hope this helps

I have to agree that it's a very hard fight, the hardest I've come across atleast.
I'm only playing on Normal though, but this the only battle that's given me trouble so far and the only one where all my characters died. So I can only imagine how difficult it is on Nightmare.
I was using a less organised team of (as I was trying to get more friendship with merrill and doing a Fenris quest beforehand):
Hawke (Offensive Mage)
Aveline
Fenris
Merrill
Funnily the above team faired perfectly fine against a Mature Dragon I stumbled upon by mistake. I'm going to get the other 4 first I think and come back with my "good" team of:
Hawke (Offensive Mage)
Aveline
Varric
Anders

My usual team was Hawke (elemental mage, later spirit healer and force mage), Fenris, Varric, and Anders. I found that it was easier to stay alive in pretty much any difficult situation if I had that basic setup: combat mage, controller rogue/archer, warrior, and healer. Aveline can be substituted for Fenris and she has better defense as far as I know, so that could even work out better. My mage ended up as a second healer, too. I don't know if you can remove the combat mage in favor of Hawke as warrior or rogue, but I don't see why you couldn't, except that having a battle mage is pretty useful in terms of damage and crowd control (cone of cold for instance).

Is this the quest where you need to collect Torahne's evil books? Is it called Forbidden Lore? I'm not even sure what your supposed to do in this quest. I found one book, destroyed it and got no quest update.

There are 5 books you need to destroy.

I read it, I didn't destroy it. I got the att points and then destroyed it from my junk and nothing happened. I think you may have to destroy them from the dialogue wheel.

you can read/take and still find all 5, but wont get the final battle, destroy all 5 and you get to fight the desire demon and her minions
taking is the worst option as you lose the chance of 2 attribute points and the final boss, destroying gets the fell grimoire which gives you the 2 after beating Xebenkeck, reading gets the 2 points but no Xebenkeck

I must've missed one. Is there a list of the locations?
I found these (highlight to read):
(1) Sundermount, cave with the golem merchant
(2) Wounded Coast, cave near the center of the map
(3) Bone Pit, eastern cave
(4) One house in the city, don't recall which.
Where's the last one?

So do all 5 give you 2 points each if you read? Now that I have missed the chance at the boss? How many Att points does the Grimoire give you in total?

properly miffed that I took these without destroying as will have to remember to destroy on my next playthrough instead - as far as I can tell this quest is rather broken anyway - i'm pretty sure you're supposed to get a letter from Idunna (who i killed) but I just stumbled on a book anyway!

I had to use the stair tactic. But i had 3 mages with rock armor and arcane shield and isabella. When u get them narrowed into the stairway and use AoE spells theyre ripped to shreds. Used some anti magi spells on the demon too
