Does being a human character in the game necessarily mean that you are a religious follower of the Chantry or can your character reject all that stuff whilst still being human?

Wouldn't be an RPG if you couldn't denounce the establishment in favor of some heathen god. Lets just hope they cut it short of siding with the darkspawn.

I don't wanna side with the bad guys but I wouldn't be into a character who mindlessly respects a dull religion either.

You wont have to be religious. Probably there are some healthy non-darkspawn cults out there willing to welcome you with open arms.

That would still be religious though wouldn't it. Maybe I'll just be a dwarf; they've got their heads on straight.

Hopefully one can be cult- and religion- less. Which would make sense for a mage that rejects the oversight of the templar...

I suspect it will be more like "We expect everyone knows something of the Chantry and the Maker," but dedication to the faith varies.

See you wont have to bee religious.

But you could possibly find a nice cult though.

BTW is the Maker a real thing in the game or is he merely believed in by the Chantry? The Imperial Chantry doesn't think he's real do they?

He may or may not be real. No shooting lightning bolts in rage from the skies.

Worst case scenario... pretend your character is an atheist like you want him to be. Shouldn't be too hard.

Personally I would like to see some darkspawn demon inhabiting a leading member of the chantry hiding right in front of the self righteous Templars noses that would be a great sub plot.

The way they talk about it in the novels, it seems like the Maker is real, in the sense that your character could physically fight with it. It's just that the Maker is currently away from their reality at the moment. Probably sitting comfy at Bioware.:P In which case, you would just be fighting the Maker's avatar if it ever came down to it... just speculation.

Anyway, the history of the world of DA seems to be based on some semblance of those events being true.

I may be in atheist IRL but I'm still curious why people think religion in-games requires being a "mindless" drone. There are bound to be many varieties of Andrastians, from fascist "kill everyone who doesn't worship as I do" bastards to "do good works and spread hope" humanitarians, from deep believers to casuals who only pray on holy days and at funerals. Most people probably fall somewhere in the middle.

I hope there's a mod out later to make you align to a Darkspawn faction.

No righteousness here...

I think it may have to do more with the timeline setting. Since DA:O and its like are set in sort of a medieval time, in our own real life time line most religious groups were divided into those groups you mentioned.  It sounds weird, but I think it helps add to authenticity and to get you involved.
Were a game a lot more grey scale, you could end up with a far less interesting story and perhaps causing some people to be crippled without a moral right / wrong path to choose.

If you call your Character Tom Cruise or John Travolta you will unlock a special Quest where you will be worshipped ^^

Watch out for the Scientology lawyers guys. They are lurking around the internet just waiting to sue somebody.

I think it may have to do more with the timeline setting. Since DA:O and its like are set in sort of a medieval time, in our own real life time line those religious groups you mentioned were louder and much more noticeable. It sounds weird, but I think it helps add to authenticity and to get you involved with said louder groups.

Hoping for that too. Would definitly be great.

Does anyone know if it's possible to play as an Dalish Elf, believing in the elven pantheon? With no humans/dwarfs etc in group?

My character is going to be very open minded in regard of this, and most likely denounce any religion unless proven.

That's still pretty close minded...
