Can the "high" dragon be petrified as well, like nearly any other boss? As far as I remember only the rock wraith was immune. (and this spell made some of the 'harder' fights in act 2 pretty easy)
Just got the quest in act 3 but will check later after work.

I've just purchased the Collectors Ed. Official Guide.

High Dragon Elemental Resistance:
Ice - Very Weak
Electricity - Normal
Fire- Immune
Nature - Normal
Spirit - Normal

The best way to deal with this (for me) is to have Aveline (Tank), Anders (Ice + Support), Hawke (Elemental/Primal mage nuke) and Varric/Sebastian (Ice Rune on bows).

In some part, the Dragon will flew away to the top of the hill and it only can attack using fire blast. In this situation I've summoned my Dog (Black Emporium DLC) and the dog will automatically attack the dragon but it was blocked by the hill, and the Dragon (stupid enough) is only attacking the dog for a time. So what do you need to do is just pull everyone aside and get all the range attack ready.

I've beaten the Dragon twice on normal and hard using the same tactics, but on hard difficulty I only left with Hawke (rogue range) and Aveline. LOL.

I didn't have an issue with this boss at all. I used Aveline to tank, Anders to heal, my DPS Warrior to off tank, and Isabela for dps. It takes awhile, but it's a fun and easy fight imo.

my Party of
Anders, Avelene, Myrril and Mage Male Hawke took Dragon Down quite easilly.

All Level 24,
Hawke with Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness,
The Final Thought Staff.

Spirit Healer & Force Mage.

However, the big damage dealer against this dragon, was Anders, with his Ice Magic that Hawke had not really focused on.

Ice Spells typically do about 500-800 damage verus these dragons.
Equipping an Ice Staff on a mage, who has Elemental Weapons active, would also be useful for Avelene.

When the Extra Dragonlings come, just lure them all towards you, use Gravitic Ring, retreat to safe distance, and while they are frozen, you bombard them with Fire from the Heavens, and Tempest. Instantly dead.

Should be noted that as far as you keep Hawke at range from the Dragon, and with Robes of Unblemished Cleanliness on, and Healing Aura active, the ranged attacks from the Dragon will not be able to kill him. (He will lose health, but it will heal before the next ranged attack can land.)

Arcane Shield and the Arcane Wall + Elemental Wall upgrades are invaluable.

Was a good fight, caught me completely by surprise though, but I managed to kill the thing eventually and it was on hard difficulty (couldn't imagine it on nightmare). My group was:

Hawke (Spirit healer mage, basically support)
Aveline (Tank, always had shield defence and indomitable on)
Isabella (Rogue, wouldn't have brought her if I'd known I'd be fighting a high dragon.. useless against the dragon (got killed within first minute, didnt bother reviving until adds came) but did alright against the dragonlings and dragons)
Varric (DPS)

Basically I just had varric and Hawke side by side far from the dragon, as a spirit healer Hawke kept both their health pretty much at max from just regenerating after every time a fireball hit em. They both fired away at the dragon while Aveline tanked it.. and if it came anywhere near them, I'd send them bolting away and use taunt with aveline.

Isabella pretty much was the only person I controlled while I fought the drag, because with her she'd get killed in two or three hits.. so I had to do a hit and run technique to stop her getting hit or focused on by the dragon. If it did focus on her, she'd just keep running away until it changed target.

When the adds came, aveline would attack the normal dragons to keep their attention while varric picked off the dragonlings in two or three hit kills each (had speed activated), once dragonlings were dead he finished off the normal dragon(s) that aveline had been keeping busy; isabella fought the ones closest to varric and hawke to make sure they didn't get hit either. Except when there were two dragons, she kept one busy but as I controlled her most the time to do hit and run so the dragon wouldnt get her health down much. Pretty much just did that constantly.. at one point varric got too close to the dragon and it killed him with flames, which nearly killed hawke too but thank god it didn't.. so I had to wait a bit until I could revive him as I had just used it for isabella. But that was really the only hiccup, isabella dying wasn't really a problem since varric was my dps and there wasn't really any other role for her. Replacing her with another dps ranger would be best, or a mage such as anders who can heal and kill the adds with area effect spells instead.

Oh and btw, my characters were all about level 17.. idk how some guy above me got them to level 24, I justtt finished the game at level 20 (leveled up just before I killed meredith). There must be a lot of fights I missed somehow.

Did it on nightmare with a 2h warrior tank, varric and 2 mages.

Get all the good sustains, make sure you have 2 mage weapons that deal ice damage, and move your party members to the same edge of the map spread out during the range phases.

I alternated barriers on Hawke and made sure everyone was on hold with mostly auto attacks during regular phases so they dont pull aggro. Only the mages cast ice spells, varric saves his energy for the little dragons. Once the regular dragons come out make sure you petrify and slam them with Varric + ice spells. Spread out and make sure you have a rerez potion on Anders.

My concern about this fight is it's the same as the Ancient Rock Wraith in being completely melee unfriendly. With the healing cooldown so high, melee will basically die no matter what because you have to dedicate virtually everything to the tank. If you don't have Spirit Healer for this fight, or Anders, you basically can't use melee.

a few hours before I found the bone pit HIGH dragon (not mature dragon lolz), I had respecced my Hawke mage out of Blood Magic in disgust--from watching NPC Blood Mages operate like I used to in DA:O--to Spirit Healer. If you are still reading this, you should have stopped as soon as you read the words Spirit Healer. The only party member that died was Isabella, due to her tiny health pool and my unwillingness to get her a bow and spec her ranged for the fight (or, ya know, actually grab one of the ranged rogues...). Even when she died I just rezzed her right back up. For me, as a Spirit Healer, it was a 4 button fight: group heal, single heal (on Fenris when he pulled threat [usually]), staff spam, and Revive.

That being said, I'm actually impressed by some of the responses I see here. I'm glad many of you are able to think through problems and come up with workable solutions instead of cheesing out like I did by using Spirit Healer.

It is ridiculously tough(long) and has ridiculous waves of grunts.

bring up the console
type runscript killallhostiles
??????
profit
*as found on gamefaqs*

I was rolling a 2H warrior Hawke with Varric, Anders and Aveline. It was an almighty grind, but I got there in the end. Pots, healing, and running like blazes when the dragon has locked on to someone*since attracting aggro from boss creatures is like trying to get the attention of a lobotomised person*. This battle could be second in length to the Arishok fight, for me at least.

The one thing I absolutely hate about this combat is how your mage and archer will almost always die if they're caught near a wall. Because of this fortitude nonsense, and the fact that just about anything out there can knock them down or stagger them, it's almost as cheap as kicking someone into a wall in a fighting game. Kick them down, kick them into the side of the map, rinse and repeat. They die without ever getting back up.

It's quite funny that these odd boss fights that are like raid bosses in WoW also share many of the same problems with melee issues haha.

There are many raid bosses in WoW (in the older versions of it like TBC) where melee basically can't go in and fight.

I did this fight in the end but both Fenris and Isabela were dead when the Dragon was at 45% and me (Mage Hawke) and Aveline duo'd it from there on.

Had myself 2H warrior and 3 ranged(anders, seb and varric)

I basically just smacked it around, running to it's side to avoid it's flame breath and melee, ranged sat there and unloaded on him and used aggro dumps and goad on me so I kept aggro. Killed adds right away and just jugged a potion if I got in a little trouble. I used restoration potions mostly so I also got some stam back and didn't need to spam bolster when second wind was on cooldown. Anders died once by getting a flame breath in the face when varric pulled aggro and had no CDs up but I used the res potion to get him back up right away.

Was pretty simple actually, most of the damage I took was from when he flew up on the ledge and shot fireballs at me. Would have to say I was pretty disappointed as it was not a very challenging fight for my group makeup. I should also mention I am playing on nightmare.

Perhaps that the thing for me though is that I don't like swigging pots at the yin-yang. I imagine most fights would be made alot easier if I did so but I've always felt potions in RPGs were either pointless or overpowered and very rarely in between.

Umm, on NIGHTMARE, I found this to be one of the easiest battle granted it took a little long --

Hawke - Healer Mage, all buffs and heal spell
Carver - 2H dmg dealer
Aveline - Tank
Varric - Bow

I started the battle by having only Aveline run up to the dragon using all her abilities (taunt, assault, bash, etc), and everyone else go into a corner of their own and do nothing for 10 seconds. The worked up hate for aveline made the dragon stick onto her thru half way of the fight before dragon started looking elsewhere.

I had Carver attack the dragon from behind after Aveline started the battle.

After half way, the dragon started targetting either Hawke or Varric. I just run around in mini circles until it started going towards Hawke. It went back and forth between these two in the last half of the battle. Hawke/Varric just kited and never even got hit. I thought it was a cheesy battle i could just run around like that. I controlled mainly Hawke when I wasn't kiting to make optimal use of my healing. I let the AI do most of the battles except the kiting part.  No potion needed.

thats the deep road mature dragon, you cant have carver/bethany for the high dragon, think 5 times bigger 10x more dragonlings and dragons

Ha! Anders, Merrill and Verric made short work of the High Dragon, and I didn't even have to res Hawke once! Merrill and Verric fell a few times though when it rained fire on us from that damn cliff, but I kicked its ass in the end.

that durn dragon!
I have been fooling around with various builds and that dragon whipped me no matter what I had on, or who I had with me -- except once...
and it was Merrill (!!) who took it down in about 30 seconds, alone (because the rest of my party died in less time than it took write this post! Wish I could remember how I specced her, but I do know she hand some base level electicity, and a couple of spirit spells, plus rock armor.

my grp was;
mage (me speced DD spells for Nightmare mode)
crossbow dude
Lady tank
2 handed tank (brother)

I did the fight in dont move mode. Basically I put my two range dps in a safe area near the cave opening. I played at the lady tank and made sure my 2Hnder was always at the rear of the dragon.

as tank I would come in and make the dragon start its attack just to move out of the way and get in three shots. then kited the dragon forward a bit so my 2Hnder tank could continue to hit its rear.

Keep the dragon away from the range and make sure to pause and move the 2Hnder also to the rear. When the dragon does its fire attack make sure you are at the side of the dragon and slowly do your impression of a dps tank on its belly.

Nightmare mode second fight I won with no deaths and maybe 1 heal pot used.

My fight was comical. I had Anders healing, Merrill DPS (with Winter's Blast + Primal), Aveline tanking, and me DW rogue. I feel I might have gone there early too, since my party was like level 7-8.

I had it down to about 30% when both Anders and Merrill were killed due to a knockback + breath. At this point I just controlled whichever character was being targeted and kited in circles while the other DPS'd.

Took like 5 minutes but managed to take it down with just Aveline and Hawke with kiting and 2-3 healing potions, heh. His breaths missed every time because by the time he finished casting, his target had run out of the way.

EDIT: Nevermind... was thinking Mature Dragon. >.>
