So what's the minimum number of companions you can finish the game with? 3? (assuming you kill Anders, have a dead sibling, don't have Seb's DLC, and skip/lose Isabela and Fenris)

I guess that's a full party so that'd make sense.

Everyone can get killed/leave except Varric and Aveline, I think. So 2, not 3.

On my first playthrough, I sided with the mages, didn't have the Exiled Prince dlc implemented, didn't do the Nate sidequest and lost Izzy. I had Zevran, Cullen and Carver [templar] show up, that I noticed. :]

And Cullen always joins you, right?

How do you lose Merrill? I don't think I ever saw an option for that.

Merrill didn't show up in my final battle, but Zevran did. Merrill was there for my battle with abom-Orsino, so I don't know where she went.

Merrill can leave, but not until the last straw.

In a rivalry playthrough choose the templars.

I actually just tried that. Sided with templars with her at max rivalry and she didn't leave. Does she need to be in the active party or something?

She was in my active party at full rivalry and didn't leave either.  I think they leave if they don't feel strongly about you and you pick a side they don't agree with.  That's a guess though.

Yeah I had Zevran as well, was a great surprise to turn around and see him there.

Merrill didn't leave when I sided with the Templars either, I had full rivalry with her and Hawke just talked her down.

From the guide book:

Can leave party

Yes - but not until The Last Straw

Crisis Points

If you do not achieve 100% friendship or rivalry before The Last Straw and side with the templars, Merrill will leave the party. If she is a rival, but not at 100% on that side of the scale, you must fight her.

Lost Anders, Isabella and Fenris. In the last fight, I got Zevran, Donnic and Nathaniel so I guess each replaces a lost companion. Its similar to how the knights replaced the characters in Origins at the battle in Denerim, where you protect the gates.

Bethany joins you for the last battle if you've send her to the circle and becomes a party member again.

I don't think this is true, I was rivals with Merrill but the bar was not maxed, and when siding with the templars she initially argued against it but then decided to stay and was still available.

The guide is incorrect, she stays with you if you are maxed out as a rival. Unless you have to be in a romance as well, regardless it is possible to side with the Templars and keep Merrill without being on the friendship path.

The guide does point out that you can have a maximum party of 8 in the final battle, so the extra characters people get only turn up while you have 8 or less in the field already. No doubt it works to balance the final fight for people who chased off all their normal companions? Although I would guess it isn't a certainty that a player will make friends wit Zevran/Donnic etc.

I think it also says that Aveline will stay with you no matter what if Fenris leaves because you sided with the Mages.

Look at bolded. Nothing is wrong with the book.

"If fenris leaves, Aveline will stay no matter what. If Fenris stays, Aveline will leave if her friendship is below 50%"

And then later on

"Aveline will rejoin you if you are on friendship path, but only if she didn't resign as captain after Favor and Fault."

I had Nathaniel, Zevran, Donnic, Samson, Cullen, Varric and Merril's help as non companions in the final battle. Its similar to how in Origins, Earl Eamon or the Legion of the Dead, etc. helps you against the Archdemon.

I lost Isabela and Bethany by the end of Act 2. I chose to kill Anders. All remaining companions were on 100% friendship or rivalry and none of them bailed on me when I chose the mages to side with.

I spotted Zevran, Nathaniel* and Cullen in the final battle. Sebastian and Aveline were helping outside of my party. I didn't notice Donnic but he might have been there since I did Aveline's personal quest.

*As Nathaniel's quest hadn't shown up for me I used a console cheat to trigger it before the endgame.

Nope, all that "kill me if the demon possesses me...." talk was just a way to increase suspense.

Luckily my warden was in not even the Maker knows where... A lever 35 full of talents and with Vigilance in his hands is not something Meredith would appreciate.

And talking about it, I really wish that Vigilance re-appears at some point just as Awakening states.

I know...OMG..I know

If any of my lvl 35 Warden's showed up, Meridith be like, you know what, screw this I quit!  Especially my Mage/Death Knight.  He loved nothing more then destroying entire nations under his plated magic using boot(less Morrigan wanted him to make cookies, then he did that, cuz he was entralled to her)

Side note, we all know if Oghren showed up, he'd solo everything, while having a drinking contest with Varric.

I didn't lose anyone. Fenris stayed even though I sided with the mages.

I've never had 100% anything with Merrill and she's never left me when I side with the Templars or Mages. She always goes "Oh I'm not sure about this! :(" and I tell her that it'll turn out that I don't have pants on. Fabulous.
