I just purchased Dragon Age: Origins from D2D, installed, patched to 1.04, and let the DLC come in. Upon finishing a character's appearance the first time around while picking abilities, the sound started skipping and my PC froze. Second time around, while distributing points for stats, the screen went black and my PC froze. Both times, I had to manually kill the power to it because the task manager wouldn't even respond. So, I got to work troubleshooting.
Before posting, I verified that everything works. This is not an overheating problem. Mass Effect works fine with settings maxed and ran for thirty minutes that way. Crysis works with almost everything maxed, ran for thirty minutes no problem. NWN2 also works perfectly, nvidia skybox problem notwithstanding. SLI on, SLI off... Same problem. PhysX on, PhysX off, same problem. Sound on, sound off, same problem.
I've made sure that all other applications are killed before running DA:O, including antivirus. I've run all the proper diagnostics, and everything is fine. I even made sure no dust is accumulating in my PC, and it's clean.
Soooo... The only thing I can figure is that I have incompatible drivers. I hesitate to change drivers since I know it'll kill NWN2 (and I've restarted it three times at the start of chapter three without beating it), but I'd rather have this running.
I run two GF8500 GT's on driver version 8.17.11.9745 Is this a good driver, or am I looking at the whole uninstall, wipe, reinstall pain-in-the-butt driver dance? (God, please let there be a simpler fix for this -- been a long day and I'd really hate to top it off with wrestling with nVidia... again.)
DA:O is the ONLY game I've ever seen that lets me reproduce my own face exactly, Oblivion included btw so big kudos to Bioware on that! I've beaten this on Xbox 360, but after a red ring, I picked it up so my girlfriend could play it. She's a long time fan of Bioware and played Bulder's Gate, Diablo, Diablo 2, NWN, and NWN2, so she's really itching to see this one. She will be home soon, so... here's to hoping things pan out for her little surprise.
