I remember before the game came out the devs said the reason Bethany or Carver died is because it was important there was at least one Hawke mage. But after playing and finishing the game, I can't figure out why.
wait, why did Bethany or Hawke have to be a mage again?

Has to do with making the templar/mage fight hit close to home.

This, I think.
Game fail.
Should have allowed some interaction with the sibling during the game to make it effective.

Because that's how it all starts. In Order to live in the City without fear of the Templars, you need Money, you need to be someone. That's why you go on that DeepRoads Expedition. Gain the Attention of Viscount, etc. If Bethany survives, your Mother managed to gain the Viscounts attention, which saved Hawke and their Mother from being prosecuted for harboring an Apostate. And that was only because you were expected to hit the jackpot with the Expedition.

That's a pretty weak justification. Just saying "we need money to get out of the slums, to buy back the Amell estate and the Deep Roads expedition is our best bet to hit jackpot." would have been just as good/bad.Tleining wrote...

Also; isn't becoming rich and gaining a big name for yourself the last thing anyone with half a brain would want to do if you want to hide? Wouldn't staying a nameless nobody, staying quietly in the slums away from prying eyes be pretty high on your priority list?
Given the overal theme of Templars vs. Mages; I at first thought that if you weren't a mage yourself, giving you a mage NPC who's close to you would make you feel more connected to that theme. But that possibillity was blown away at the end of act 1 (with what's likely BioWare's most disapointing/frustrating gamedesign decision so far). Thus the only remaining reason is: early game party balance.
