So i have a question. Has anyone at all played through DA2 and sided with the templars because they thought it was the right thing to do? I mean you are doing a good guy playthrough and you sided with the templars. i can't imagine that because i would only ever do that if i felt like being an ****. so anyone out there think that the templar path is morally right? of cource neither can truely be such but i see the mages as the lesser of 2 evils because well... take 1st enchanter. he was the biggest anti-blood magic mage there is and he was willing to make himself an abomonation just to kill templars. he would not have done that except in an absolute last resort. if the templars hadn't he would havebeen fine. in DA2 90% of the time, mages are forced to blood magic by the templars. if wouldn't squeeze the tube of tooth paste it wouldn't have gotten all over their hands. so, back to the question:  anyone out there think that the templar path is morally right?

Both sides have valid reasons to do what they do.

The leaders are just lunatics.

both sides are justifiable in there intents, but both also have unjustifiable means. Neither will define whether you are good or bad, only the means you personally choose to take. in the end, you will still stop a very bad person either way.

I was absolutely intending to do this.

Until Meredith wanted to Annul the Circle because of Anders.

So I chose the insane blood mages to support.

Orsino seemed more reasonable than Meredith, but even he cracked in the end.

Sided with the Templars even though I was pro-mage the entire game, everybody I ever helped on the mage side had to prove themselves blood mages and after what Anders did I couldn't just sit there and let it happen. I didn't want to Annul the circle but it was the only choice that ever had a chance to keep order in Kirkwall, though I would've probably asked for Meredith to stand down.

Not if you learned he was behind the Kirkwall Killer Image IPB

both sides think the other side are power hungry and want to turn everyone into slaves.

I fully get your point, and I considered it as well.

But then I realized I didn't care about keeping order in Kirkwall . . . so I went with the mages, who were NOT the ones who set off the bomb, even expecting it would end badly.

I desperately wanted a third option, the templars are full of oppressive self righteous pricks while the mages love to prove the templars right at every turn and turn evil at the drop of a hat. If the leaders were much more likable and not insane dicks the decision would have more weight.

Haha, Orsino was just like "Hey! Templar leader is crazy so I need to do something crazy myself!" *cuts himself, turns into a random Harvester* "Yay!"

Throughout the game you find complete monsters and very reasonable folks on both sides. You can't really say one side is right and the other wrong. I thought Orsino was more likeable than Meredith but I ended up siding with the templars because of Anders. I did spare what few mages I could at the end.
Strangely, Cullen is far from being the extremist he was in DAO. He still has his convictions but also some doubts and a willingness to compromise. He turns out to be a very sympathetic character to me.

Well, he did have a rationale for it - he didn't want to give Meredith any more ammunition than she already has.

I tried not to pick sides, and mostly helped mages the entire game. But after what Anders did, what happened to mother, and that whats-her-name mage you helped before kidnapping your friend and turning on you, I realized mages cannot ever be allowed to be free, and realized siding with the templars was the better option.

I support more freedom for circle mages.

I only sided with the mages because I felt the kirkwall branch of templars were grossly abusing their power. Sort of regretted it when I wound up killing more mages than the damn templars.

I sided with the mages. The Templars are a pack of bullies who kidnap and imprison innocent people for something they were born with. Its plain bigotry. They preach about how bad blood mages and apostates are when half the time they are the ones who drive them to their actions. Desperation breeds desperate measures.

Magic is dangerous, but so is a sword or a crooked person is power.

Annulling the Circle of Magi for something they had no involvement is going too far.

How much freedom are we willing to give up for security? This seems to be the theme of DA2. I chose to support the mages over the authoritarian slavers (templars). Yes, with freedom comes the risk that some mages will abuse their power. However, declaring that nobody can have freedom because some people abuse it is insane.

In my opinion, you cannot support the templars and remain on the moral high ground. As soon as you violate the essential liberties of others through force you have become a tyrant.

Neither side is completely right or completely wrong. They both have logical points. I sided with the mages because my Hawke was a mage so it seemed to make more sense.

I had to choose the mages. Sure, my Hawke was a mage. Sure, I've never really liked Templars all that much. Sure, I'm a Blood Mage myself. But, the straw that broke the camel's back was when Meredith decided all mages had to be killed (and yet she conveniently forgets about the fact that the mage that destroyed the Chantry is not of the Circle).

I also have seen the "Meredith is under the influence of the idol" argument, but all I see is a sword made out of lyrium that amplified her already existing feelings about mages (and the fact that it gives her demi-godish abilities, like bringing statues to life).

It really just depends on your point of view (though what doesn't?).

If you're worried about the Right of Annulment, though, that's really just Meredith being a jerk. She turns on you in the end, Cullen takes over as Knight-Commander, you become Viscount. If you're playing a good guy, it's pretty safe to say the Right of Annulment isn't going to happen while you and Cullen are in charge.

Every mage is a walking time bomb waiting to go off.
