In its place, I am finding elven mythology and history to be far more fascinating instead. Merrill may have introduced the subject, but I am finding the mythology quite interesting on its own. Did the elves really achieve immortality? How vibrant was their civilization? The elves do share some parallels with the late Roman Empire (while the Tevinter Imperium is a more direct parallel to Byzantium).
Historians debate whether or not the Roman Empire "fell." In the meanwhile, elven history and traditions are rather shaky, similar to how we lack a lot of information about the late Roman Empire. We know little of how the empire was run, the state of its miliary forces, so on and so forth. It's not a direct parallel (since Byzantium was a descendent of Rome, while Tevinter laid siege to Elvehnan) but it still fits into the narrative nonetheless.
