Aside from the horrid locked in camera there are a few things that I've noticed during combat that reeeally tick me off. I don't mind the combat system changing to a more fast paced or such things. I prefer origins speed but it's a new game, I expect changes such as that. However there are some things that just seeme like blatant flaws.
The selected character will simply stop attacking and stand there if target is out of reach if or told to move
Why on earth when you tell your character to attack someone in melee, if the target they are attacking is knocked out of range does your character simply stand there and stop attacking them?
It's not just limited to this. Say you're playing a rogue. You want to recieve a flanking bonus so , the way this worked in origins was that you would tell your character who their target was and then once that was chosen, you ocould click the ground behind said target. Your rogue would then walk to the position behind the target before commencing his attack. In DA2 when you do this, the enemy becomes targetted for this character but so long as you are directly controlling them, they won't attack at all. even if they have that enemy targetted and are standing 2 feet away from them.
This doesn't even make sense, especially since it was the way the targetting and control system worked in origins. If you told the selected character to attack someone they would attack that person until they died, not until they were knocked slightly out of reach or until you oredered them to move a little round the edge.
If the selected character doesn't reach with the initial attack he will simply sit there
This point is pretty much directly related to the above one.
I'm not even halway through the game and there have already been countless times in which I've oredered my Rogue Hawke to attack a target only for him to attempt the obscenely fast leap move into combat but be blocked. if he doesnt' hit the target I've told him to atack with this initial leap, (be it through someone else getting in the way or him hitting scenery) rather than continue to walk into combat with the target or leap again he will simply stop dead as if no order was ever given, even whilst the enemy is still targeted. If an enemy is targetted I WANT my character to attack him, not stand there.
It's little frustrations like this that really mar the combat experience as a whole for me in this game. it just feels unpolished which sucks for what is a good fun game. Just nothing compared to what it could have been following on from the brilliant game origins was.
I think the worst part of the actual combat itself barring the camera is the enemies phasing in during combat as reinforcements. Whoever thought this was a good idea should double check next time. When you see a slave leader with 5 men around them, have a conversation with them over something and decide that you have the strength to beat them. Why on earth is it logical or sound from a gameplay perspective for 6 more generic badguys to phase into existance from any possible entrance to the map, often even right next to your mage or other suched ranged character yo uwere keepeing out of the fight.
If you want the fights to be tougher, either make the initial gyuys tougher or have everyone your'e going to fight already there. It really kills part of the whole planning a fight idea when you have absolutely no clue whether 2 or 20 more enemies are just going to decide to appear out of thin air during a battle . It feels utterly out of place and immersion breaking in the game and only adds unneccessary levels of frustration during combat. Considering that this has happend in 70% of all the fights In the game so far I don't think this is going to change any time soon which is a shame for htis game but please bioware do NOT dothis for your next game, it's silly, immersion breaking and frustration for any semblance of tactics or strategy in combat there is left in this game.
Phew, that was a fairly large rant about things. I do like this game and am enjoying what I'm playing but it's just such a disappointment after Origins. I truly loved playing that game, it felt like a labour of love fro mthe development team whilst this just feels rushed out to garner more profit. All the little details and intricacies that were there in origins and made it just that bit more enjoyable such as item descriptions, the environments, a proper DnD style combat system and actually managing your party simply aren't present in this game. It's really sad to see.

Still Super Duper Serial.
