Whichever survives meeting the ogre, do they have to die at the end of act 1 or is there a way around ?
I'm asking because by browsing the appearance 2da I found they had alternative outfits which AFAIK aren't used. Or are they ?...

You can not take them with you in the Deep Roads, or have anders in your party when you go.

If you take Bethany/Carver into the deep roads without Anders they will die, if you take Anders they can become a Grey Warden and are gone for the rest of the game besides a few cameo's and showing up in the final battle. If you don't take them into the deep roads Carver will join the Templars by choice while Bethany will be captured and taken to the Circle and again they will show up in cameos during the rest of the game and might help depending on which side you choose to side with.

Ah thanks. So they have to leave your party but not necessarily die. Well that's good to know.
