I'm getting close to the end of Act 1, and I realize the equipment (armor, weapons, accessories) may change for some companions. After the prologue, Hawke and Aveline both had a new set of equipment and their old stuff was no where to be found. Does this happen or do we keep the items equipped on them before the time skip occurs? Thanks.

Hawke definitely keeps the items he/she had equipped before the skip. I haven't looked to see if Aveline still has the armor upgrade I bought her in Act 1, though.
EDIT: Checked and yep, companions keep armor upgrades between acts, even if their outfits change.

Thanks, but I'm wondering more about the weapons and accessories. I have some decent things equipped to them, that I would rather sell than lose. Do they keep those as well?

Yes they keep all the equipment they have equipped.
