If this game wasn't called Dragon Age 2, would the reception be better?

If this was just Dragon Age:Kirkwall, would the people who are so upset just evaluate it on its own merits and not as a sequel to dragon age origins? I really hope they do end up making a sequel eventually.

I think if it was named anything other than DA2, then there wouldnt be such an outrage.

If DAO never happened i genuinely would like this game. As it is? Its decent enough, but just like me2, there is very little incentive to play it again.

If this game wasn't Dragon Age, IGN, Gamespy much all other corporate multimedia review websites would have gave this game a mediocre rating.

I just don't see how this game pulls off a review that's in the same light and positive like Origins when this game has a lot less to offer.

Thats my thought on the matter exactly, they want the game to be judged on it's own merrits appart from DA:O then don't sell it as dragon age 2. Sell it as Dragon Age: something else and bill it as a spin off. "A new type of adventure in the dragon age universe." something like that would have told me to go into this not wanting to compair the games.

Instead they put up the 2 and told me I could import my saves from DA:O, which meant that I was going into a sequel, but I wasn't. It's like that second matrix movie, everyone watched it and went WTF?

Yeah; if they hadn't built it up as a sequel and instead marketed it as a sort of side-affair, people might've been much more reasonable.

I hope and pray for a REAL sequel to Origins.

If the game was appropriately titled "Mindless Hack & Slash with Copy & Paste Dungeons Pwn!" then yes I think it would get a better reception - because only people interested in Mindless Hack & Slash with Copy & Paste dungeons would purchase it.

I very much doubt the response would be any different no matter what they could have called it. If it's not Baldur's Gate 2, it's crap.

The outrage is about DA2 ruining the franchise. If it was on its own, it would just suck and people would ignore it.

People need to stop saying that since it's Dragon Age's sequel, that reason alone is why it got great reviews. It got good reviews cause it's actually a good game. The reviews were pretty honest imo.

Putting aside the pointless troll post above me I have to say Bleers that I think that if this hadnt been a DA title it would have been bashed quite a bit.

The release version is fairly buggy (its crashed what 6 times on me? and necessitated restarts and reloads because of quests and what not buggering up but not "completing" even though I have done what was needed to complete said quest); the stock pre high res tex pack textures SUCK, I mean seriously SUCK. They are worse than the Textures in DAO; they make the game look blocky and generic - a serious step back. Why the better textures were taken out and put on as a download I will never know.

And the thing that would get the game really really panned were it not called Dragon Age 2? The levels themselves.
For the entire game they reuse the same 10 or so levels/areas for every single quest in the game; they dont even bother to tweak them to appear different. They just slap in an impassable door (really bad RPG convention impassible doors btw). They dont even cut and paste bits of various different levels/areas to make it seem a bit different like they did in KotOR, JE, ME (1 and 2), and in DAO; they just lift the level, rename it, stick in a couple of random loot drops, and some random enemies that sometimes make little to no sense (encountering blood mages or spirits where wolves/wear wolves or other animals would be appropriate).

Also the promise that PC would get a zoomed out tactical view for the camera in battle; that we didnt actually get. It zooms out slightly; but not anywhere near enough to be useful at all tactically. Bioware failed there in spite of swearing that it would be included in a later build prior to release date. Bam no tactical camera.

Now I am not saying I dislike DA2 or anything. I love it, its awesome.

But these are things that would have lost the game serious points in reviews if it werent for 3 things:-
1. It is a Bioware Game.
2. Its called Dragon Age.
3. It has awesome writing.

These things hide the worst of the flaws I think.

People only hate it because it's different than what the first was.

If this was a whole new title, more people would like it.

Maybe, but I think branding it under the Dragon Age franchise would make people compare it to Origins no matter what you called it. It was made clear from the beginning that this was not going to be Dragon Age: Origins 2. Whether you call it Dragon Age 2, Dragon Age: Kirkwall, Dragon Age: Rise to Power or Dragon Age: Not Origins - it wouldn't matter. People would still hold it up to Origins and/or Baldur's Gate 2 and either love it or hate it.

I think calling it Dragon Age: Revelotion at Kirkwall or something else would have done better since Dragon Age: ORigins was not Tittled Dragon age I.

This to me, tittling the game Dragon Age II; might of been a mistake.
I was wondering this myself a few months ago.....

Priestly or Gaider had even said then that the Warden was NOT the lead in Dragon Age II.

oh well whats done is done and all that is left is to learn from the mistake

yeah, they missed the boat with this one. As soon as I played the demo it was the first thing that went through my head. No warden, Not enough similar game play. why exactly is this DA2?

they could have named it anything else and lots of this hae would poof, go away. ofcourse then I say to myself why am i annoyed so much by the game if a simple name change would have made me feel better. And All i can say is, Where the hell is my warden!!

I think so as I actually feel better about the game by thinking of it more as a large expansion/side story that sets up the true sequel to Origins. Dragon Age: Rise to Power would've been ok to me if it was billed as an Action RPG that takes place in the Dragon Age universe, not a direct sequel to Origins.

I could go with Dragon Age: Rise to Power

Hopefully Bioware reads this and takes it into consideration....

9 Hells, the now Defunct Origin Systems INC's CRusader games were not sequals to each other even though they had the same characters and the same universe.

If they had released this as a more action-based spinoff that described the events of another heroic man named Hawke whilst your warden was off to destroy the blight, this would have caused less of an outrage.

When the said it was announced Dragon Age II, people expected their hero to return, an identical playstyle to the first, and imported saves that actually meant something, which is why DAII was a bit of a shocker when it launched.

In summary, yes, this should have been released as a standalone title set in the Dragon Age Universe.

Otherwise, it's like announcing that in ME3, we'll be playing the British sniper guy from the trailer, whilst Shepard is off saving the galaxy somewhere else. It just isn't right.

If it had been named Rise of a champion a Dragon Age story or Hawke a Dragon Age Story or what ever the name but without Dragon Age 2 slapped to it i guess people would not jump as much as they are now

There are many many things DA2 got right. I actually find the new icon-ed dialogue wheel MUCH easier to use and deal with than lists of text.
However the paraphrasing was supposed to be MUCH better than what ME's was. It failed.

The combat being exactly the same except faster with the talents being streamlined to create a more unique/diverse skill set is a huge step forward for me. The people who called it a "hack n slash fest" are obviously idiots. The combat is EXACTLY the same as in DAO; except its animated FASTER. Thats it!

I loved the way you interact with NPCs and companions in DA2. And I enjoyed the romances, and friendship paths that were entirely seperate.
Yay no more Ninjamances. And no more having to be a total ass to avoid them.

The game is unfortunately on the short side. Shorter than ME2 even with sidequests; it took me 8 days straight playing nearly to complete ME2 and in DA2 I have finished it in just over 3. Kind of a shame.
Dont get me wrong; what is there is done well but its just not quite long enough. You kinda hit the ending rather abruptly. Also the last run to the "last" mission there are literally no side quests for you to do to stretch it out.

EDIT:
Also to the person who cried about it not being a sequel cos you couldnt play the Warden. Here's a newsflash. Sequels do not have to involve or require the protagonist from the previous iteration in a series. In fact they often arent.
Tolkien himself did sequels without involving the same protagonists. Silmarillion to Hobbit; Hobbit to Lord of the Rings (Lord of the Rings was actually written as and intended as one single book just in several volumes).

it does NOT matter anymore you mean.
months ago, it could of been purposed by the community to Bioware to purpose it to EA for the name change.

and only then would it have mattered...

but we all know what they say about Hindsight......

I hope this at least shows bioware there is a huge amount of interest in a real sequel to DA:O (but they should have known that already..) Its a good game (aside from the crash bugs) when viewed on its own or as a subset action franchise to go with the true rpg, but as a sequel its pretty disappointing.

I really, really want to hope that - for the sake of the human race - all of this melodrama draw back to what the game is named.

Regardless, it's not BioWare's fault if people can't comprehend subtitles and eight months of information saying this was not a sequel to the Warden's story.

Yep. If this were Dragon Age The CHAMPIONS adventures as an example, an off shoot of the original and not a sequel, I'd be OK with the changes. At least then I'd have hopes of a proper sequel.

Anyways, this is the last Bioware game I buy at launch.
