If this game wasn't called Dragon Age 2, would the reception be better?

I think if it was named anything other than DA2, then there wouldnt be such an outrage.

I think that people still would have said "it's Mass Effect with swords".

If this was just Dragon Age:Kirkwall, would the people who are so upset just evaluate it on its own merits and not as a sequel to dragon age origins? I really hope they do end up making a sequel eventually.

No.  Some gamers don't play to game, they play to rage on forums.  Some people genually express their concerns, but some people just have a weird thing about raging.  Point me to one big release that had a forum that at least 15 people didn't rage on within the first hour or two.

Though I do think it shouldn't have been named Dragon Age 2.  Not out of criticism, out of perspective of the time-line.  The time it's placed in according to Dragon Age: Origins, it seems a lot more like another expansion like Awakening.  The length of the game is a full game itself, but I mean time perspective.  It should have been something like Dragon Age: FancyTitleThatI'mNotCreativeEnoughToComeUpWith.  Then if they make a sequel that's like, post-DA:O time, like maybe in the future, when that demon baby grows up and whatnot, if you had it anyhow..  It hinted that there would be some excitement in the future.  Considering the time leap there, that would make sense to call it Dragon Age II.  The way this runs side by side, it isn't really a sequel.  Though it's a release after the first release, it's not really happening 'after' the story, making it adjacement, not a successor (if you look at it from time-line perspective.)

So yes, I do believe it should have been labled as a ... "Dragon Age I" game.  Just to expand further on that.  But the title is already made, so too late to change it now.

I think the problem is the Baldur's Gate II fanatics that DA:O attracted with the Spiritual Successor line BW always used. The fanatics that fear change like it's a nuclear apocalypse. As soon as they clicked the mouse button their heads exploded with rage since they saw the faster animations.

Sigh! The faster animations are NOT the problem, they are not even A problem. The problem's run much deeper.

I only used animations as an example. The fanatics, in my opinion anyway, blow some of the problems out of proportion.

The dungeons, calling the combat ability spamming, button mashing garbage, companion armor, the story, the characters, the whole 'play as human only' thing, although that has cooled down a bit, the inventory. The only complaint I really agree with is the act 3/ending not being that great.

ok fair enough. I personally have no issue with the combat. I think it is fun although some of the animations are stupid but I can look passed that. The play as human only is..... well, not my personal choice but I can live with that as well.

However, the story is not really that interesting or engaging, the companions are bland and even the ones that are from your own family are hard to care about. Now for a game like this the story and the companion's are quite important. Why else would you want to play it? If you don't want a game with a good story just play most FPS's.

The dungeon's are copied and pasted from each other with a few things put in the way for the illusion of variety. The BW rep said that they were going to limit the number of places we could visit so they could focus on making a world that was unique and exciting..... they failed. DA:O had a large world to explore with varied locations ranging from the Forest to the Deep Roads to a number of towns/cities. Here we have Kirkwall....... more Kirkwall, The deep roads, recycled dungeon. It just makes the game very bland.

To me this is not the evolution of games, this is the devolution of games. The fact that a squel (which this was marketed as) can have so many step's backwards from the original and so few forwards is a bad thing. I am all for change and innovation but this was not an example.

Now taking the game on its own merit without comparing it to Origins. It is a ME clone, no one can say it isn't, and it was done poorly in comparison. The comabt is fun, the graphics... well they aren't bad but they aren't good either and I am not a fan of the new art direction but graphics don't make a game so I can overlook that.

The story is poor but the storytelling is quite good. I like the idea behind it the way the story is told.

For me there is just a few things missing and I could tell it was rushed.

I just hate how people see one reused dungeon and then rush to the forums calling the game repetitive garbage, although the reused dungeons was a problem. The reason behind staying in Kirkwall is probably so the player can develop some sort of emotional attachment to the city, so that you know the city like the back of your hand and when something bad happened to it you'd care. I liked the companions, but thats a more personal preference then an arguement. The thing I think went wrong with DAII is that BW tried to do new things but EA rushed them and they couldn't work out the kinks, which the game has plenty of. And I do agree that the story could have been better but I did like that they went with a more personal story rather then 'OMG BIG EVIL ARMY SOLVE EVERYBODIES PROBLEMS SO THEY CAN HELP'

I agree. I am a self confessed hater of this game (by hater I mean bad things outweigh the good things therefore game is bad) but I can see that it was rushed and most probably by EA. I can understand that the reason you stay in Kirkwall is to build some emotion to it but I just didn't.... at all. I am all for these ideas provided enough time was given to develop this properly which it clearly wasn't.

I think the idea behind DA2 was great but was just really poorly executed. Whilst Origins had its faults (e.g. the story has been done to death as one example) it was executed much, much better and therefor was a far superior game. However, had BW had the same amount of time to make DA2 as they did with Origins I am sure DA2 would be equally as awesome.

I really think that if it hadn't been called a direct sequel to Dragon Age: Origins then it wouldn't have as many negative comments, as long as along with that the game was touted for what it is.

The point is, a lot of people bought the game expecting a vast RPG with a lot of choices and options that had consequences. They wanted a cake and they got bread. It might be really good bread, but some people don't even like bread. And some people were expecting cake, so the bread just annoys them, because they were promised cake.

Metapohor aside, the reception wouldn't be so bad if the game had been called an action RPG, not a tactical RPG because it would have had a different player base and the player base that it has now that would have played it anyway wouldn't have been so disappointed because what they got was bread, or an action RPG...or was it cake?:D

The question is... If this was made by a not as well known studio would people continue to defend it this much?

Reading some reviews where they say "i want to give it a lower score... but its bioware!" makes me just facedesk.

Wasnt the original title Dragon Age Exodus?. Someone found that in the demo files I believe. It probably would have gone over much better as a side story, or a lead in to Dragon Age 2. I still love the game, but if you took away the perception that it was a direct sequel, it would have staved off many of the trolls from comparing it with Origins ad nauseum.

I was totally going to say in my original post that referencing the cake is a lie would be silly, but this is awesome in every way.:o

If it would had been some other game than DA2 by some other corporation I would had probably never heard of it nor bought it. However if I would had seen Izzy's boobs I would had bought it at once.

I would had played the game and all my observations would had been the same.

in my opinion, the outrage would be less, but even as a stand alone game compared to similar RPG made years before it lacks in a lot of areas, i mean with a team of people who are experienced in game making you would expect a game that satisfies gamers.

If DA 2 wasn't labelled as RPG, It may be the best action adventure game in history.

Lol, true, at least the Escapist would had done so.

The problem would had just been that action adventure fans would had yelled the game have too much text to read and why they have to mess with inventory and why leveling doesn't happen automatically (even though there is an auto-level option).

DA2 is to gaming like Yes-man is to people.

I thought about it a bit and I really have to say the outrage would be smaller but it would still be there, the game is just too dubed down and ...well, bad

sad to say that about a Bioware game but anybody I ask about it is disappointed and I also just finished the game at a friend myself and I was underwhelmed and am most likely placing it on my list of "not to buy" which list was only reserved for Sonic until now from Bioware

btw I haven't seen anywhere in the game Morrigan or anything about the witch and her army of Morrigans, was that false advertising or did I just miss out on that?
