Weapon colors? What do they mean?

When I pick up or purchase new weapons, I notice that their thumbnails in the inventory screen often have them in different colors. Some are green, others blue, some purple, orange and red. The manual says green is better and red worse, and I know that certain colors indicate certain damage, but that doesn't seem to match up with the weapons (i.e. a weapon that doles out fire damage has a blue background for its thumbnail). I know the stars indicate a weapon's ranking, but does anyone know what the different colors mean? I can't figure this out.

Quality/Rarity kind of thing, by my gathering. White is normal, orange are rarer, and purple seems to be the best.

Green is weird. It appears to be DLC.

The stars is the "level" of the item. 2 stars means it's on par with your level, less means lower, more means higher. The colors are the "qualities/rarity" of the items. It goes, from worst to best, Red->White->Gold->Purple->Green.

Ah! That makes sense. Thanks very much. Turns out I've been using a rather crappy item then.

If you have experience with World of Warcraft the purple colored items will instantly jump at you as "epic" quality, at least it did to me.

Yeah I'm not sure I quite get the item color thing. Green is clearly DLC. From there, as far as I can tell, it's pretty much a Diablo-style thing where white < orange < red < purple (I think). At a given point in the game higher tiered items tend to have more bonuses and higher base values (e.g. armor, dps). However, just like in Diablo, item base values increase as you get later in the game, so just after starting a new act, you'll see vendors selling white items with higher base dps/armor values than your hard-won uberweapons- though of course they won't have the same stat bonuses.

White items tend to have 0 or 1 special property (randomly generated), orange have more.
Red, green and purple appear to be hand crafted with set properties and given names, with purple being the most powerul of their kind.
Green denotes DLC and promo stuff and if you do not destroy them on sight you should feel bad about yourself. :P

and don't forget that some items (purple mainly) come with codex entries. so free XP, I think.

Hey, "crappy" is in the eye of the beholder. It's all about what works for you. I personally still have on a ring from the very beginning of the game and I'm hip-deep in Act III. Literally. I hate the sewers.

Practically speaking, Purple and Green are the only colors that stand out. There are Red items that are better than Silver and Gold items, so it's pretty much a useless rating system.

I've been going over it again and again and how I see it is:
Red< White< Bronze < Gold < Purple
with Green being DLC and upgrades to your companion armor.
But the color system is only partially beneficial as some of the gold stuff you get back in act 1
will easily be replaced by red stuff in act 2. (Much like the Diablo system as mentioned before)

You haven't seen any purple items at all, or just not any in drops? For example, a certain rocky merchant should have a purple ring for sale in Act 2. I don't think the purple items drop except on scripted events, like after an "epic" combat at the end of Act 2.
