Despite DA:O having more conversations with the Companions, I've found myself really liking a lot of the DA2 companions anyway. I was just curious how others would rank the entire cast as far as how much they liked them. Right now I'm only just starting Act 2, but my list is as follows:
1. Hawke
2. Hero of Ferelden (Cousland)
3. Alistair
4. Leliana
5. Morrigan
6. Bethany
7. Anders
8. Isabela
9. Zevran
10. Aveline
11. Varric
12. Merrill
13. Sigrun
14. Fenris
15. Sten
16. Dog
17. Oghren
18. Nathaniel
19. Justice
20. Velenna
21. Shale
Don't know enough yet about Sebastian or Carver to rank them.

1 Alistair (His witty retorts can be hilarious)
2 Merrill (She is just too damn cute)
3 Shale (Cos stamping on chickens is too much fun)
4 Oghren (gotta love the little drunk fella)
5 Isabela (in my eyes, officially the best assets in video gaming. suck it Lara Croft)
6 Hawke (Not bad for a main character)
7 Bethany (may not see her much, but she does make a great little sister)
8 Zevran ( maybe the only crow Shale likes)
9 Varric (pretty good little story teller)
10 Morrigan (Bad girl gone good)
the rest of them i dont really rate. Especially the hero of ferelden. i hate not having a voice actor.... lol

I won't rank all but I'll give my top ten
1. Varric (witty, tough, and can even make a crossbow look manly)
2. Leliana (her gentle nature combined with her past and skills makes her an interesting character.
3. Bethany (I liked her so much she became the main reason I sided with the mages)
4. Isabela (she was feisty, unafraid to be sexy, funny as heck, and if you look at the cut scenes she was a friend to everybody.)
5. Morrigan (her back story and personality makes her dynamic)
6. Shale (Pigeons!)
7. Aveline (A believable strong female warrior)
8. Zeveran
9. Allistair
10. Merrill
Oh and since Hawke isn't a companion I didn't rate the character. If given the choice between her and the Warden I would choose Hawke. In fact I hope Hawke's story line continues (hopefully with the option to continue with sibling if they lived.)

Top 10 (was harder than I thought, I kept pushing people down and rearranging it):
1. Isabela (hilarious, loved her banters)
2. Morrigan (loved her entire character + Claudia Black's voice)
3. Varric (also hilarious, loved how he watched over everyone in the crew like a protective papa bear)
4. Fenris (broody, gorgeous voice, really interesting character)
5. Zevran (great dialogue)
6. Hawke (I like both, but slight edge to female)
7. Alistair (funny, cute, snarky, memorable)
8. Aveline (great female warrior, felt like she had a lot of depth)
9. Anders (I feel like he should be higher on my list, I adore him)
10. Oghren (one of the funniest characters in the DA universe)
Honorary Mention: Dog ;p
I didn't realize that so many DA2 characters topped my list. I really enjoyed their dialogue; I wish we'd had more interaction with them.

Yeah, I'll give my top ten as well among the NPCs.
1) Varric: such epic win is Varric. Manly, badass, hilarious, and surprisingly heartfelt and poignant.
2) Anders: oh, my poor sweet INSANE Anders.
3) Sten: Sten is still made of the stuff of awesome. And I really hope he wasn't one of the Stens I killed in DA2.
4) Aveline: we need more female characters like her in gaming.
5) Shale: DEATH TO PIGEONS!
6) Alistair: still IMO to date the best integration, writing, and execution of an NPC companion in a BioWare game.
7) Morrigan: my first mage sister
8) Zevran: had a surprising amount of depth, and was hilarious to boot
9) Carver: the reconciliation was possibly the sweetest thing in Dragon Age
10) Dog (both of them): probably one of my favorite parts of Dragon Age, having a puppy!
As for Hawke and the Warden, I prefer Hawke. She was the stronger and more fleshed of the two.

1) Hero of Ferelden/Queen (She will always be #1. Kicks everyone's ass)
2) Lady Hawke (she was hilarious and greedy but at the end she made a choice of love/sacrifice)
3) Alistair (Forever my favorite Bioware character. I "squeed" of joy in the cameo.)
4) Fenris (Handsome, gorgeous elf with dark past and sexy voice? yes please)
5) Anders (*sigh* my Shakespearean tragedy/comedy)
6) Zevran (It took me a while to appreciate the sassy elf but he's a favorite)
7) Morrigan (I love her character yet I hated she got some Alistair.)
8) Flemeth (in DA2, I wanted to kill her so I could loot her armor. I also wanted her make-up)
9) Varric (the only dwarf I really like. I didn't really feel a connection with Oghren.)
10) Merrill (she surprised me the most. I thought her character was really cute and funny)
I really enjoyed the characters from both games but in the end I still prefer my warden Queen over Hawke. I think Hawke has yet to prove herself. Maybe in the next game?

7) Leliana
8) Ogrhen
9) Isabella
10) Fenris
11) Wynne
12) Justice
All the others just tie for last
As you can see, I had some trouble deciding
As for the warden and Hawke, I prefer the warden quite simply for the story, all the decisions made etc. As stand alone characters Hawke wins, obviously. Really makes me wish they'd just used the dialogue wheel in DA:O so it'd be viable for us to play as the warden in DA3.
Honorable mention to Flemeth, I love her dialogue and am very interested in finding out more about her.. or it.
Edit: Almost forgot:

Didn't rank all of them.
1. Alistair-charming fellow that will always woo a girl's heart.
2. Lady Hawke/Warden- Hawke was wonderful and I grew very attached to her story. The Warden is where it all began.
3. Varric- Witty, has Bianca and come on look at that chest hair.
4. Fenris- Challenging personality but well worth it to truly get to know him. His voice is enough to want to like him.
5. Aveline- strong and calm. She's like a best friend.
6. Shale- hilarious bird hating
7. Wynne- a caring mentor.
8. Anders- sarcastic and adorable , I miss the Anders in Awakening.
9. Oghren- very funny banter with companions.
10. Bethany- sweet and sassy
11. Merrill- cute, naive. By the dread wolf!
12. Flemeth- very mysterious

1) Leliana-Red head, sexy french accent, and very adept at killing. Whats not to like?
2) MaleHawke (sarcastic attitude)-Some of the best PC voice acting I've ever experienced, diplomatic and agressive tones just don't measure up.
3) Alistair-Great story, great character, and a great bromance. Remember swooping is bad.
4) Isabela-The funniest character yet with a compelling romance subplot.
5) Varric-DA2's best bromance and he's funny as hell.
6) Merrill-She's just too damn cute to keep off this list.
7) Bethany-I love being the over protective big brother. If only BW would of allowed her to stick around.
8) Anders-Complicated character who has evolved over the series.
9) Nathaniel-Best Awakening companion who deserves more stage time.
10) Morrigan-Normally adverse to the ice queen type, but Morrigan pulled it off nicely.

Tl;dr reasons, but here's my list:
1) Morrigan (my favorite character in the DA games. Friendship has never felt so satisfying as it is with her. Although she's almost always disapproving of your actions, she does care about you and of course, I found it extremely difficult to dislike her witty, sharp tongue)
2) Zevran (he's funny, lascivious, and tortuous all at the same time. I really like how he doesn't let bad life experiences and painful memories to bring him down. He finds ways to circumvent dire situations and live his life to the fullest. It's relieving to see him again in DA2)
3) Anders (from the moment he said "I didn't do it", I knew that he was going to become an instant favorite for a lot of people. He's certainly proved worthy of all the attention he's getting. Even though he's lost a bit of his spirited and carefree attitude, he's gained passion and unfaltering determination to change the lives of his people for the better; and that is truly a worthy cause)
4) Sten (wish we could've known more about him. He was always stand-offish and shuts you down when you try to squeeze more information out of him; but if there's one thing I was proud of, it was that he calls you "kadan". Oh, and the cake was obviously a lie)
5) Leliana (under that kind hearted chantry sister exterior, is a truly conflicted young woman who begins to question whether she was ever right for the role. Her relationship with Marjolaine was one of my favorite aspects about her. How devoted she was to her, until Marjolaine betrayed her trust)
6) Alistair (he always cracked me up with his naive curiosity and overall foolishness. Besides, I like how royalty doesn't stop him from being down to earth. Even as king, he still had the time to get ****** drunk! Now that's respectable)
7) Oghren (he's utterly hilarious and fun. All the drinking and talk of wanting ponies lightens up the mood for me)
8) Varric (he's a bro. Enough said. Carver might be your brother, but Varric is actually the one looking out for you. What surprises me is that even when his brother betrayed him for wealth, he still found compassion to care for him)
9) Wynne (a nagging grandmotherly figure who cares a lot about you. It's a shame we might never see her again, but I'll always remember her advice and wisdom. She's really the epitome of an upstanding mage that Anders is fighting for)
10) Nathaniel (a little vitriolic at first, especially with his blind devotion to his jerkass dad, but he eventually comes around and realizes how wrong he was about him. It's also a good thing that his brooding isn't accompanied without a tinge of humor and occasional niceness)

Its really hard for me to rank but Alistair is def my favorite. I like Hawke a lot but I still prefer the Cousland Warden more (best backround in DA:Origins by far imo). Varric takes the cake for DA2, his imbelishment when he single handily killed his brothers entire house was just too funny and he runs funny too.
Some of the awakening characters I didn't really care for either. Like Sigrun and that elven healer. Nothing really wrong with them, just weren't memorable.
Carver is a douche, period.
