After a fair bit fo experimentation I have found that Shadow works better with DW and has better synergy with DW talents; the 100% flank critical for example is best taken by a DW rogue; conversely I think Assassin is better for a bow rogue. DW=Shadow, Bow=Assassin.
I would be curious to see what others think.
Cheers
Assassin vs. Shadow for DW rogues..(nightmare)?:

I took both on my DW Rogue. A lot of people like Duelist for defense, but meh. I'd rather kill stuff faster.

I am playing rogue Archer (lv11 so far) and have taken Assassin up to Assassinate. Will fill up Assassin until lv16 (with the exception of lv14 where I get the +25 crit damage from shadow) for Assassinate upgrade and then filll up Shadow.

I've fully upgraded Duelist, When you combine Isabellas Across the bow with, Merril Horror Hex, with Throw the gauntlet on a boss, youre doing quite alot of damage!
I plan on doing 9 playthroughs with each specialization though and varying up skill trees, This game has alot of replayability for me.

Assassin and Duelist 4tw.
Shadow is nice if you have a tank, but the game is much much harder if you have a separate tank unless you control the tank manually. The tactics in DA2 just don't seem to work as well as in DA:O... sometimes they'll just ignore them completely. Easier for you to just tank stuff yourself and assassin gives you assassinate and crit damage from cunning which you'll be stacking as a defense based rogue.
