Thanks for all the info, guys.
On my second playthgrough, and I wanted to romance Isabella this time (the first time I went with Merril, because it was just too easy to pursuit and she's so sweet).
Isabella seems more of a challange, so I wanted to pursue her this playthrough, but Merril came on to me anyway. Imma let her down easy, I think :-P

XBOX 360.... On my second play through, for the sake of getting achievements, this is what i did to get multi romance. In act 2 left Merrill final “questioning belief” undone, then started act 3, started on the loose by visiting Hawk's estate and reading letter, then went to Hangman, then went back to Hawk estate then started “no rest for the wicked” (isa quest) once done went to hangman, did the romance with Isa, got the i love you and romance stuff. Last went to Merrill Hut, then spoke to her the 3 times to complete her “Old questioning belief” quest, after talking to her a few times went back to Hawk's estate, then what do you know, Merrill showed up and gave the option to get busy..... So there you have it 2 romances with at the same time. Keep in mind i have not finished the game yet so i do not know how this will affect the end game conversation. Hope this helps you all
An update to my previous post. after playing a bit more it seems that if you do my method, all of the dialog seem to be bugged as far as Av keeps asking Isa about when you get your ship what will you do. Mer and Isa now convo is the same as if you never started the romance with Isa. I guess its true, once Mer moves in, she becomes the ultimate Groove blocker hahaha.. but on a good note for the folk who just wanted to see fi it is possiable. Its still a way to start the romance with 2 at the same time and get both to confess their love in one play through.

Then Isabella asks to see me at the hang-man, and asks if I was in love with Merril. I chose the option "Yes". She says she is happy and I better treat Merril right or she'll crush my nuts.
After that I romanced Merril completely and was never intimate again with Isabella. Isabella and Merril had a close friendship in my game. Merril was always in some cutscenes with Isabella at the Hanged Man.

Ok i finally went through the paythrough and i got the ending romance for both at the final words portion before going off into battle to protect my mage brothers. so even though the group banter had some minor glitches and for some reason i can not complete the com quest alone, i was able to finish with both of the lovely ladies. maybe i am the first to do so, if i am then yeah yeah

You're not the first. It's actually a bug. Merrill is supposed to bulldoze anyone else.

Can anyone confirm that the patch removed the epilogue bug where Varric says Isabela stayed by your side when you didn't romance her?

I was rather disappointed that no option existed for a confrontation as in Origins.

I can confirm it. I just did a power-playthrough (using console scripts) and Varric clearly said Merrill, despite having a fling with Isabela earlier.

Hurrah! My first playthrough I sat back after finishing the game only to WTF at 'We all left Hawke's side, except Isabela, of course' The wench had left me in Act 2 and never come back
Also, your username is fabulous.

If I'm not mistaken you can chose to sleep with Merrill, but if you tell her you need time or whatever (the don't move in option) it ends her romance there and your romance with Isabella should continue.

This is not supposed to be the case. If you sleep with Merrill, even if you tell her it was a fling, most of the time (pre1.02) your romance ended (and Mary Kirby is on record saying that it's intended... Merrill and Anders are romance juggernauts, smashing all those in their way). There were odd occasions where it did not happen, but they were far less common than the romance ending. Sometimes it would go into a weird hybrid state, where Isabela would think that she was in a romance with Hawke in her own conversations, but still act like she wasn't in others (e.g. sleeps with Zevran without giving Hawke a chance to do or say anything).

So I've reached a point where I seem to be a romance with Isabella and I have the opportunity to romance Merrill now too. When exactly is the point where one romance is terminated? Is the the love scene with Merrill or do I have to not break up with her right afterward or is there a choice coming later? Because she doesn't seem to move in with me yet. In fact I can go up to Isabella after the romantic scene with Merrill and still flirt with her saying that "You're the only woman for me."
If you sleep with Merrill, other romances are (most likely) bulldozed. There are rare situations where you get Isabela into a hybrid state where her conversations think that you're together, but nobody else does (including her running off to explore Zevran's deep roads without a care for Hawke).
Merrill and Anders are romance juggernauts, smashing everything in their path. If you dip your wick in that, it's very difficult to get the wax off.

Do you know how to tell for sure if you are in a romance with someone? I tried going for the love scene with Merrill while being in a romance with Isabella, then saying it was just a fling. Merrill leaves and doesn't get a new outfit. Isabella doesn't say anything to me about her in the Hanged Man. Later she shows up to my house in All That Remains. But there is still a ackward conversation between Isabella and Merrill about how much Merrill loves Hawke.
Dragon Age wiki says you can do that and still romance Isabella as long as Merril doesn't move in with you.

You're in that weird hybrid romance-nomance state. It's definitely not intended behavior to be in that state. For *most* intents and purposes, you can continue the Isabela romance, but you're going to find some really weird things that happen.
Some conversations specific to the Isabela romance will continue. This means the final kiss, the achievement, and her approval-related conversations (Questioning Beliefs) will treat her as if she is in a romance with you.
Some conversations will not acknowledge the Isabela romance, e.g. Zevran and Isabela will run off to have sex with each other and completely ignore Hawke, Isabela will not acknowledge the romance in party banters, Gamlen, Leandra and Aveline will not mention her in their conversations when they should and Varric will not say that Isabela stayed with Hawke during the epilogue.
So... you'll get the Isabela romance, but not the whole Isabela romance.

It's not, not universally. But it is when the OP does it, because I've decided so.
