You've got profanity, bloody, exploding corpses, drugs, demons and yet the romance scenes don't jive in the **** house?  I mean this sounds kind of stupid but i'm disappointed.  You've got the drugs and rock-n-roll but you forgot the sex, so this game just rocks but no roll...
(I would have searched for this topic but I can't find the search box or option on these forums, get with the program Bioware and quit breaking the site or making it so dang complicated a simpleton like me can't understand it...)

Oh there's sex. It's just you can't request your fade-to-black sexy-time anymore from your companion. It happens though, just romance Isabella and you'll see a feisty sex scene. That's the companion I wound up romancing on my warrior version of Hawke. The hero who makes the bad girl fall in love with him.

I'm rather glad they did away with the cringe inducing sex scenes of DAO and followed ME2 with the tasteful fade to black, but c'mon Bioware, there's a bed RIGHT there, can't we have the option to cuddle with our LIs at least?

That's one thing that annoy me. While in party banter Isabela brag how often they get to it (and how Hawke is a better lay than Zevran) But other than that there's not much talk or romantic gesture or not even "come at my house" kind of thing.

I've only played through Anders and Fenris, but theirs are pretty tame.
Fenris' is a little less tame, but only by a fraction.
It wouldn't surprise me if Isabella's gets something raunchier.

I must admit, ratcheting up the graphic violence to insane levels is rather odd when juxtaposed next to simultaneously toning DOWN the depiction of sex&romance while broadening the sexual horizons of the protagonist. We have a game where it seems like you can sleep with damned near everyone when you're not busy being covered in showers of blood AND bodyparts, language is colorul and diverse (and believable, as a result), and romance scenes took a giant step backwards.

I don't play the game to see naked (or half naked) elves and the like, but I can't help but wonder what one of these romance scenes would look like if played out in a movie, fully clothed. I think Bioware took the best approach in the first Mass Effect. Characters stripped down, did the deed to the tune of a silly little PG13 scene that drove Fox News crazy (+1), and all was well. Dragon Age Origins saw more detailed romance scenes that were laughable because of the underwear, and DA2 goes further in that direction. Is this because of concerns over international sales?

Don't get me wrong I really understand that attempting to reach the broadest market possible in a game that is already tagged as M-rated is the best way to make back the financial investment, and that's NOT a bad thing, but why not do it 'right', then add in parental controls. Many older games used to have the ability to disable everything from blood to vulgar language with a parental lockout. Why can't we have our cake and eat it too? Mind you, in 2 years time this will be a non-issue once the modders have all had their way with it, but once again, why deputize the modding community to do things that probably should be done anyways? The bulk of them typically take it too far into the realm of animated pornography anyways, if anyone can find the best end result it's probably the original dev. team.

You have sex with her. You tell her how much you love her. She's not sure how to respond. she leave with the relic, come back during the invasion. You duel the Arishok for her life. She left during the timeskip and cameback after, you talk to her and reiterate your feelings. You kiss her before the final battle. Varric then say the last time he heard of Hawke they were still together.

Ahh, I see. I was, however, referring to their little sex scenes, not the romance as a whole, but that's good to know I suppose.

Of the four, Isabella's is the more... creative? It's very obvious that a lot of effort was put into the animations and everything. Anders and Merrill's are actually reused (they both lay down with Hawke on the bed before fade to black), while Fenris gets the nice wall pinning.

I would've gone for cuddling and/or more kissing I have to admit. Seeing as my LI moved in, I would expect to be able to do that much at least - heh.

I have always wondered why we can't just have parental controls. Wouldn't that make most happy? If you don't want to see it, or don't wish you kids to see it...shut it off.
I am not sure anyone else noticed this, but in Origins there were also several times there were half naked people in jail cells etc.  DA2 seems to be run by those that faint if someone shows an ankle. So it is not just the love scenes.
It also seems there is less affection in general. In Origins you could get a little pre-battle kiss. DA2 they just tell you to keep moving.
Oh well, I'm atleast enjoying the new combat.

Okay, here's a dumb question but...do you have more than two scenes that indicate you did it with the same character if you're romancing anyone other than the pirate? People say to check your house at night, which I do, but as far as I've been able to tell, there's the Fenris shows up, sleeps with you, breaks up with you, apologizes three years later and presumably sleeps with you again... and that's it. There doesn't seem to ever be another time he's shown up even for a nice fade to black. It's kinda like "Eh, yeah, we're in a relationship, but mostly we're just killing things. Despite the fact that in this game I have a house rather than JUST A TENT."

Lol,
I have a house, so I should 'get sum' more often.

Perfectly logical.

But I too felt that the relationships in DA2 were more false, and fake than DAO.

In DAO you see every moment of the story,
However
In DA2, it misses out big chunks of time, which leaves the player to assume that nothing happened, but in reality, the story writer is trying to imply that stuff did happen.

eg - If you ask Anders to move in, in Act 2 , then its meant to be presumed that he has lived with Hawke, and probably played hide the Sausage a few times too.

I do feel however, a little cheated,
I wanted to romance Ander's in Awakening, and now that I finally can, the Romance system sucked.

I hope they fix it in an Expansion, and KEEP Anders/Whoever the Hero ran away with, in.

Hopfully if we move back to a game type that focuses on the details of a short duration, opposed to a long 10 year period which misses out 3-4 years etc, we will get the nitty gritty details we liked in Origins.

Did I miss something? I "romanced" Isabela and I got some fully clothed groping and then fade to black. She was even wearing clothes when we were finished. Hell, I've seen pre-release screenshots that were more risque... was I supposed to fight the Arishok to get the full scene or something?

For the record, I'm only curious. The romances were pretty lame this time around (nobody interested me), but I was wondering just how PG they really are. Hell, Hawke didn't even take his shirt off! XD

@ Icy,
I know, there were pre-release screenies of topless Female Hawke and Fenris, and did we see any of that... No.

In fact, all of the promo teaser stuff was just complete false advertising.

Heck, When Anders was getting ontop of me in my Romance, he bought his staff to bed. Not that I dont like a good Shafting or anything, but come on.... a little bit of flesh would have been nice.

I've said it many times, but again, just for the record. I think they had it perfectly right in ME. I don't need, heck, I don't want full frontal nudity, at all. But dry humping in underwear (or even fully clothed), in a M rated game no less, is a foul, as well.
Take same lessons from any teen movie, if you like. Make creative use of camera angles, put some obstacles or even a pillow in front, then fade to black. Easy. Believable. Tasteful. For reference, see Mass Effect. Made by BioWare.

If you're talking about the cuddle scenes like the Mass Effect 2 ones that take place after the final boss, then I am glad they're not in there. It was kind of embarrassing to watch those. If you're talking about sex scenes, then I would say that I was left wanting a liiiittle more screen time.

I just wanted more inane, occasionally flirty conversations. The ones that immediately come to mind are the lamp post in winter and gossiping about companions conversations with Alistair. They don't contribute to the main story but they do worlds for bonding. I think a lot of the connectivity problems people are having could possibly be fixed with more opportunities to bond, such as that. I don't know if that is financially viable to have those conversations and the cutscene conversations, though.

As it stands, I loved the Fenris rivalmance. Didn't do the others yet so I can't speak for them, but I found it to be exciting because he and mage Hawke disagreed so harshly. The conversations and animations were top notch in all of the conversations, too. Being able to disagree but still be lovers or respected associates with a companion was a fantastic move.

This annoyed me as well as I mentioned in other topics, one which I started saying nearly the same thing just in other words OP. The sex scenes are tame enough for a T rating but they can have ****ty conversations and show bodys getting ripped apart literally and blood everywhere but god forbid we see some t&a or the other for the ladies. I understand other companies have more guts (R*) but this is beyond sad. The Isabella sex scene is more tame than the first I had sex. She starts to dry hump you on the bed and thats it. No clothes removed, no dirty talk, nothing. The sex scenes in ME2 were more risky by far and they weren't even risky but I'm just wondering Bioware, are you implying that sex in the past was tame and they didn't take their clothes off? Sex can be in great games, anyone play RDR where a hardcore sex scene occurs on a table? They know how to use an M rating while you guys just don't seem to want to use it to your full advantage.

Sorry, but this has been an issue with me for awhile. I just hate when some companies will show me all the blood and gore that sickos would love but get scared to show us anything sexual and dry humping is not sexual, its what some of us did before we first had sex in our teens. The characters on your games are adults that talk about sex frequently but when we see them, they do less than what a basic cable tv show would show us. I'm gonna stop now, don't wanna raise my bp.

Yeah, I'm going to have to agree that the fully clothed make-out scenes were a bit absurd when you take into account the grotesque nature of some of the quests (the Killer) and the endless blood explosions. Whatever. It's common knowledge that graphic violence is far more acceptable than sex, but honestly Bioware, next time don't add in something like that idiotic Lily Killer quest just to earn your M rating. This topic wasn't really about that quest, but I can't help but feel kind of angry that that kind of trash is acceptable when a shirtless man or woman is not.

Yeah, I mean, in the Dialog and everything, the characters run around with blood and guts smeared accross their faces... I mean...
Come on.....

This game more a less has the same rating as True Blood, but only half the fun.

I'd have loved to see more fluffy romance scenes. Ones you could skip if you just DIDN'T CARE about them, but things like Merrill maybe showing Hawke around part of the forest and a scene of making love in the grass, or after you give the book to Fenris, a scene of you helping him learn to read.. or him reading one of the risque books Isabella carries around and him saying that he just can't picture it and a joking fade to black of him wanting to see if it's actually possible to do what the book says, or you could interrupt Anders during one of his manifesto writing scenes and seduce him to bed.... I dunno, I was just expecting MORE in terms of actually showing the relationship. Not two scenes to decide you're in one and that's it. :/ I LOVED in Alistair's romance how smug he was about kissing you in front of Morrigan, particularly because it annoyed her. And how he got that goofy adorable smile when you asked him for a kiss not in private. I just expected, you know, when we saw that DEPTH of relationships in the past game, we'd see....more particularly when your characters know each other for six years rather than six months. (First year doesn't count, since you didn't meet any LIs before Kirkwall, last three years are post-game.) That's a DLC they could sell that I'd buy. They could call it the Romance DLC. Then people who don't want more icky romance messing up their hack n slash don't have to get it, but those of us who actually want our LI's to be in our house and things to look like they LIVE THERE with you and initiate romance at your leisure, could have it.

People could laugh at others for spending money on it, but I totally would to have an immersive game world. Maybe we can petition for it?

I don't understand the desire to cuddle in a video game. It's one thing to see your character grow, but to just watch it lie there...?
