Seriously though, could they have thrown any more bad stuff at hawke? His sister dies, his brother abandons him for the templars, his mother is killed in the most gruesome spectacle ever, the city tears itself apart twice, he had to foil his own lovers attempt to make a deal with slavers, and oh, yes, one of his bffs is a terrorist!

All this bad stuff that happens to hawke, I can't imagine why anyone would want to go through that, I did really truly have to spend an entire day recovering from the exhaustion of going through what hawke went through.

It is even worse if you play your second play through. You always get reminded of what is going to happen.

Hawke has the most depressing story in a Bioware RPG, calling it now. Though in my game Carver came to the Deep Roads, got tainted, and had to be killed by Hawke. That's even WORSE!

I'm glad we get to roleplay his reactions to an extent. With Carver and Leandra's deaths I was mashing the 'I failed you' options hard as possible.

But hey - your romance comes to visit you when Leandra dies. That's something.

^I dunno, my Shep had and continues to have a pretty awful life. His LI won't even talk to him beyond email. Also he died. Hawke's tale definitely is a tear jerker...an awesome one at that.

Except Hawke's tale isn't over yet I am betting... DA 3 baby. <sigh> As to my knowledge this is the only Bioware game that I've played that doesn't have a sense of closure to it.

That's totally why I left that soldier for the crazy girl with the affinity for tattoos.

I wonder if playing Hawke as amoral would affect the story much.

Hawke's life was hell, what more could be thrown at that poor champion?

Shh, don't challenge the writers. They might hear you. D:

I find it ironic that Hawke is the Champion, of what? Massive epic grief? A fickle populace? A civil war? Ugh, gods spare me from becoming an important person in this life or any other.

I just beat the game as a two handed warrior. I gotta say it was awesome in every respect! great job! Now I'm going to pwn as a mage! I must agree w/ the people saying Hawk went through Hell! Any person in real life would have gone insane!

Bioware I salute you on a great job of a sequel! nice balancing act of hack/slash, cave and dungeon delving, intricate story, lots of moral issues and all round much better graphics in game play and the cut scenes. But I will say WTF was that bringing Flemeth back for one damn scene if she isn't apart of the actual story other than helping the Hawk family escape? Thank you for the cameos of DA:O characters!

Ahem - if you take Carver and Anders along to the Deep Roads, you can save Carver if you want your Hawke to be slightly less depressed.

Oh just remembered another fault! Not that it effected the overall game play but, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot did you do to the Elves? They look like those blue aliens from Avatar now. What happened there? I think most people would agree with me that they looked great in DA:O

But praise must follow a critisim(sp), thank you for Isabela!!

I agree with the OP. Come the end all I wanted for my Hawke was to sail away with Isabela and never return to the hellhole that is Kirkwall.

Its different for everyone but you do have to go through some **** haha. For me I had to kill Carver....was sad haha, he was my favorite character to fight with too =(. I think making Hawke lose everything was a mistake, they wanted us to feel the characters pain but in doing so it made me not want to like any of the characters because I expected them to leave or die!

I must say, Hawke is by far my favorite character that Bioware has ever created. The game was just tragedy after tragedy and I NEVER get teary eyed during video games, I got teary eyed about 3 times during DA2.

Eh I felt more involved with Commander Shep than Hawke or any other DA characters :)

Ahem yeah but... You kind of had to know it beforehand and that sort of ruins the whole point doesn't it ? Plus my Hawke was just fine bringing Bethany along, without need for bringing an abomination who clearly stated he wanted nothing to do with grey wardens anymore anyway.
Yeah, turns out it wasn't such a hot idea after all, heh. But I think it made for a better story, I totally didn't expect it to happen then and like that.

Ah well, at the end of the game my Hawke still had two family members left, an uncle he had finally come to accept and a long-lost cousin, all was not lost. Yet.

I think the most fascinating heroes have to be thrown in the worst possible situations over and over again. Their strength is not from magic or weapons, but from how they cope with loss and agony.

I don’t know how my Hawke didn’t commit suicide. Every time something good happened something ten times worse was lurking around the corner ready to strike. I had to take several breaks just to keep from being slit-your-wrist crazy from all the emotional up and downs.

Wow, It's crazy to hear that some people must've had an even worse play-through then I did.

Is resorting to blood magic really the answer, dear? :(

I personally love all the angst and tragedy. There are things they could've handled better for more actual emotional impact, but overall the sense of dread and uncertainty was a nice touch. I kept expecting everyone to die or turn on me.

Poor Hawke. Whatever he/she does, things just go very very wrong.

Well, I got lucky and had Anders in the Deep Roads because I wanted a healer nearby. I would have been pissed if I'd lost Carver simply due to party choice... it seems like that's the nature of this game. Terrible things happen because of even small decisions, and that's all well and good. However, nothing good ever happens! I mean honestly, Hawke's life flat out sucks. He didn't even get paid for that Deep Roads excursions... I thought I'd come back rich, but all I get back is my initial investment? That's total bs.

Now that I'm thinking about it... aside from the thrill of defeating a particularly powerful enemy, I can't remember even one thing that I enjoyed while playing as Hawke. Hm... Maybe the writers need to learn when to ease up on the drama. You go through all that crap, and there are no "awesome" events to even things out?

But the fact s/he didn't end up killing him/herself shows that s/he is strong enough to be a Champion. Or perhaps the tragic events made him/her that strong? Haven't finished the game yet, so i don't know.

I'd prefer if some of those events were preventable, but i guess DA2 took that "Dark Fantasy" thing more seriously than Origins. Things worked out pretty well for most of my Wardens :) Hawke however suffers pretty badly no matter what you do.

And being one of those people whose feelings go into the stomach so to say, this game will propably cause me an ulcer... Oh well, just have to relax with some no-brains-required FPS' :D
