I don't think there'd be any purpose from a marketing standpoint. Call of Duty got where it is because of addictive multiplayer, not because it's a first person shooter. Speaking as a consumer, it wouldn't change my interest in a new Mass Effect title. I would still be looking for tight gameplay and great storytelling. Mass Effect 2 already had both of these locked down.

And as far as gameplay goes, I think the third person view works best for the various things ME does. Pausing the action in first person would seem weird to me, and so would selecting and arcing powers. You'd have to remove the cover mechanic entirely. And I don't know about anyone else, but I find switches from first-person to third-person views when going from gameplay to cutscenes to be jarring. I hate it when it happens in Halo or Fallout. Bioware has always loved their cutscenes, so I don't think it's the direction they should take this particular franchise.

Right now, the third-person gameplay is sharp, and it feels different from any other game I've ever played. If you go first-person, you have to compete with a dozen other established franchises after they already found a niche--one that isn't overpopulated--that can be profitable.

Killzone pulled off the cover mechanic for an FPS. And there are fps rpgs that are good.

Borderlands
Fallout (you could do tps as well, but the fps view is better)
Elder scrolls (not a shooter except for arrows maybe, but it's first person)
Bioshock

Personally, I'd like to see a spinoff made with an updated version of the Infinity engine. As much as I love KotOR and Mass Effect, they just can't compare with the Infinity engine games. A decade later and the Infinity engine games are still all among my favourite games of all time, with the Baldur's Gate trilogy taking the top spot on the list.

You can't even compare the two.

I hope to god they never make another mass effect after the third one... Halo was (in my opinion) great from 1 through 3... after that, it just got sad...
EDIT: yeah i know its not an rpg and its not liked a lot by more and more people at this point. just using an example

Mass Effect was created with the purpose of having multiple games. Why create a huge universe and then end it?

Actually i think that there many Devpeople at Bioware who keeps a good eye on Deus Ex Human revolution - If that game nails the FPS-RPG formulae and is successful with it then Bioware might just go ahead and copy them, Just putting their own spin on the game of cause.

I understand. Halo (if youre even into it) has a very large universe as well. While it might not literally be as widespread throughout the galaxy as mass effect, there is a very deep story behind it. Bungie screwed up when they got greedy and milked it for what its worth and crapped out ODST and then Reach.

EA is known to be a fairly money hungry publisher also. I guess if they do it right and they spend time to work on it instead of feeling like they need to rush it out because of their publisher, it could be a positive thing. But almost for the reason a lot of people dont want to see a ME movie made, I dont want anything to ruin the universe for me.

I'm not very fond of the idea, so far all of Biowares games have been third person or isometric and first person could potentially damage the experience. Especially since it involves a lot more twitch gameplay and the players field of view/point of perspective becomes a lot narrower.

You won't be able to play as tactical with squadmates/party members and before anyone says "but you can switch to third person for that" - well keep in mind that for a game to make money it can't be too complicated or convoluted. That would end up being to complicated or convoluted and the budget would go high by having both first and third person view, when it is not necessary.

Biowares focus has always been on story, narrative and character with gameplay being a close secondary - they should keep doing what they do well. If they decide to do a first person shooters, it should be a first person shooter - but it somehow doesn't feel right to me. It works in Elder Scrolls with a first person view, but that's cause of the world and the exploration - I love doing that in first person; narrative however in first person can severely limit your experience.

Why not a 2d platform game? With krogan that jump all over the place?
Or a racing game in space?
And what about a kinect game?!?!
Mass Effect on Wii, It would be incredible and it would sold another 200.000 copies...
Or another fantastic Iphone app?!?!?!

People beware the NewBioware could make your dream come true!!!

I prefer third person for this trilogy because it allows you to see Shepard as much as possible. Makes sense since the story is Shepard's.

(I would welcome a toggle option like Bethesda's though)

Isn't that obvious? Of course it's just my opinion, what else would it be? <_<

But a lot of people think Fallout is pretty good.

I could imagine an FPS in the ME Universe. If it's done I suspect Bioware would just license the rights to a respected company and go from there.

What I'd really prefer to see though is some type of Real-Time-Strategy game set in that universe. Depending on how ME3 ends it could lend itself well to that sort of game.
