I never really saw the point of stealth in this game. Has anyone had a positive experience with it/found a reason to spend the points on it?

Possibly as an archer, I don't know. I play a DW rogue and I have that tree almost maxed (not the wounding maintained skill, whatever it's called), assassin fully done, and then I have a bunch of points in Shadow but only for the de-aggro and the passive abilities. I have 0 points in Stealth and don't plan on having any there, really.

i have gone shadow and assn and never researched it , never needed it evade was enough to get out of trouble. combined with the fast paced style of the rouges dual weps , and the buffs it gets to its attack speed and crit , using stealth and the added crit dmg seems useless when i can do twice that with twin fangs and twice twin fangs with assassinate

I have a stealth archer build planned out (no experience yet) :
Archery: 6
No Pinning Shot upgrades. We don't need a faster cooldown on this and it will crit and disorient anyways from stealth. Smoking Arrow is not required as we get automatically Obscured by stealthing. Storm of Arrows is not important enough.
Scoundrel: 4
Blindside for damage, Follow-Through for stamina and upgraded Back-to-Back for another way to enter stealth.
Subterfuge: 3
Stealth, Ambush and Lingering. This combined with Shadow Veil gives two guaranteed crits per stealth.
Shadow: 6
Everything except upgrades.
Assassin: 9
No relentless strikes.
The idea is that stealth will Obscure and last for two guaranteed crits with increased damage. You alternate between three activated abilities to enter stealth and whatever 2 followup skills you want. Get high cunning to make them really hurt. The constant stealth will also keep you alive.
I can imagine you'd need quite a bit of stamina to sustain a stealth skill between every two attacks, but it's cool and definitely deadly. Remember that it works on AoE skills too, so Hail of Arrows, Archer's Lance and Bursting Arrow should crit just fine and deal crazy amounts of damage when you combine them with an Elemental mage for mass Brittle.

Stealthed Isabela stops getting backstabbed->oneshotted and becomes an unkillable DPS monster - at least till you turn on FF
Oh, and in the first game it allowed you to explore enemies in the area without fighting them, didn't try it here

Btw, I have something similar for Varric, if you prefer him:
Bianca: 7
Without Shadow Veil, we need Smoking Arrow to Obscure.
Sabotage: 5
I chose Fatiguing Fog for the spare points. It offers another way to Obscure and allows cross class combos with Disorient.
Scoundrel: 4
Same as Hawke.
Subterfuge: 3
Same as Hawke.
Marksman: 6
I don't see a purpose for Kickback.
The only huge difference in playstyle is that you have to manually Obscure before stealthing.

Didn't see the point myself, since you can't even explore using stealth. I do recognize the fact that there may be some viable builds based on it but in all honesty, there are just so many ways to get crits and so many better talents in the other trees, it's not worth it. The only thing remotely useful in subterfuge is evade/tactical withdrawal if you want to somewhat drop aggro or get away fast if cornered of surrounded. But there is back to back for that.

I don't see any point in getting the actual stealth ability, but getting obscured from entering stealth when you use Decoy is very useful.

I used it a lot as an archer when I was being overwhelmed by enemies. I used decoy more often once I acquired that. Stealth saved my life more than a few times I think. It doesn't fool everyone but often if you've got a mob coming after you it will eliminate at least some of the threat, sometimes all of it.

I've never used it.

I used it in DAO to get passed melee enemies so I could take out mages quickly... But I never bothered with it in DA2. It seems a little pointless with the increased mobility of characters, and all of the other ways to get crits/do higher damage.

Sadly, everything on the Stealth branch after Stealth requires 2 points spent in the tree, so you're required to pick up Evade if you want Ambush or Lingering. I'm trying a stealth build at the moment, and picking up Ambush early was a rough ability point investment.

It improves Isabellas survivability. Only way I've used it so far.

Thanks for the correction, I really didn't notice, as it's very unusual to hit a wall in one direction immediately... It's not a big deal though, because the point in Invisible Friend (Scoundrel) isn't really needed. Still annoying.

DO NOT TRY using stealth for scouting. You will be disappointed.
