Terrible chronological bug for Merrill's cutscenes and companion quest.

So here's the deal, I was in Act 2(or 3??) and I visited Merrill in her home, I talk to her and out comes a cutscene of her crying and talking about Keeper Marethari being dead, and how it was all her fault.
At this point I went "wtf?" as I had just come back from Sundermount and everyone was still fine. I even went back to Sundermount to check to see if this was the case. It was.
Then later I complete Merrill's companion quest and realise that the cutscenes are supposed to trigger AFTER you end up wiping out the Dalish because of the Keeper's possession by the Demon.
By this time I was seriously annoyed because it ruined the story for me, as I knew the Keeper was going to die before it actually happened.
How could a bug of this magnitude make it through QC? It totally destroys the story and is further proof that the game was rushed.

Bugs happen. That's why they're called bugs. QC can't catch everything.

I killed Marethari and went back to her house to find Merrill whining about how much the Keeper lectures her. Something's definitely up with that quest.

Oh wow, really? You too? I was wondering what she was talking about when that happened. I assumed I heard wrong and that she wasn't talking about the Keeper. Now this makes A LOT more sense, as I was upset that there wasn't a cut scene after that whole MURDERING HER ENTIRE CLAN bit. Turns out that there was, I just saw it early...

This post actually helped me clarify what that was all about, thanks.

Her quest order is bugged in the final Act. On a whim I visited her house at the beginning of said Act without talking to her at the estate, she was my love interest so she had since moved in, and found that without even bringing anyone there with me Varric was already standing there, not even saying anything or initiating his cutscene in the place. Then when I brought Merrill back on her own, to see if I could trigger the proper dialogue order since I was then convinced that talking to her at the estate is what caused the bug, she treated her own home as if it was a cave - same dialogue and everything from when you click on her in a cavern. There are a lot of bugs with that place, though thankfully in my case I was still about to finish A New Path even after throwing my hands up and watching the disordered dialogue.

Ah, now that would explain why she didn't have anything else after I went to Sundermount. I thought it was weird that she had no reaction after killing Marethari and we returned to Kirkwall. I was expecting to see a companion quest update of some sort. Oh well, no biggie - if it gets fixed I'll go try that part again sometime.

I got this the other way around. I romanced her after we killed the Keeper, and when she showed up at my house she talked as if the Keeper and the clan were still alive.

EDIT: obviously a boolean flag is sense-inverted. To de-geek that: game has true/false back to front on this plot flag.

i had something similiar happen to my game (possible spoilers);

i romanced Fenris and gotten Merril to Rivalry status, did not help with her any of her quests (denied her the hammer thing to fix the eluvian). in act 3 she wanted to see the demon, which i also denied but helped and instead got her clan to just exile her after the keeper's death.

after this whole ordeal, i talked to her in her cottage and was able to romance her and get her to move in. is this a glitch? i had her maxed on rivalry and got a trophy for it haha. also, after she moved in, the apostates kidnapped her in the wounded coast Orsino storyline event, but i was still able to bring her in my party and see her kidnapped as well.

I think this was a huge glitch to see Merril's doppleganger, but it was interesting. has this happened to anyone else?

I never got the "kidnapped girl in the wounded coast" quest to *start* because when I went to the place, the scene never started. There was just this "bandit leader" standing by the entrance that I couldn't target. Had to give up on it. :|

Further reason this bug might have made it through in the final game is... I did not encounter it on either of my two playthroughs.  So, without a consistent reason why it's happening, the devs will have a hard time locating the problem in the code, and it very well might not have happened when they were doing their testing.

Sorry for those the story was spoiled though :(

It's because you can get rivalry with Merril far faster than you can get friendship. The "Questioning beliefs" flags are solely rivalry/friendship based, they don't check any plot state flags.

My impression is that everyone who got these out of order, got them while being a rival to Merril.

Also; pursuing a romance can happen whether you're rivals or friends, so that is not a bug. Some people seem to be under the impression it is.

I had this bug happen to me, without even realizing it. I specifically remember feeling a lack of closure after the Keeper was killed (the cutscene with Merrill crying wasn't very memorable out of context I guess).

Only after reading this do I now realize why.

My character was friends with Merrill, and a romance.

I never had her cry about Marethari/the Dalish, even after it happened. Though I didn't wipe out her clan either... Just Marethari.

I was friends with Merrill and I got the bug, so i dont think it has anything to do with that

I got the bug while having near max friendship with Merrill, so its definitely not related to that.

Does anyone know if you get the Merrill but you'll be unable to remove her from the party after her companion quest?

My boyfriend was devastated when this happened, he was all into "what is she doing" and blah blah blah. And it totally ruined the quest. Almost as bad as when his buddy spoiled the All that Remains quest.

I didn't get this bug, but I was never able to have the last conversation with her. It was in my journal, but clicking on her just triggered one of her "it's clean sometimes" comments.

I should have read this thread before creating my own lol. I have the exact same problem, and now I have no idea what the hell I am supposed to do. I can't talk to Merrill without triggering the scene, and I don't really want to go on unless there is a way around this bug.  You'd think Bioware would have picked up on this bug before release.

For me, she ended up breaking the mirror because she said she realized it was ruining her life. Then about an hour later, I walk into her house and she's pacing about wondering why her mirror wasn't working. I was wondering where my "Because you smashed it, you dull twit." dialogue option was, but then she triggered the quest to go talk to the demon.

After I did all that and killed her clan, there was nothing else with her. The quest was still in my log telling me to go talk to the demon, but there was really nothing I could do as everything on Sundermount was dead as a doornail.

So yeah, quite buggy. Trying things a little differently in my second playthrough to see if things are still bugged.

Same.

It's like the masssacre never happened because I had to fight my way out.
She was at my place for much of the game, my female mage even slept with her but I  didn't get the romance achievement until the very end just prior to the final battle when everyone is lined up and you talk to them one last time.  Not sure if that's how it was supposed to go but I  was under the impression that moment should've happened at Hawke's home.

I heard QA and Tech Design talking about this today. They're very much aware of it, though I have no other information at the moment.

It good to know that much at least and gives me hope for a fix.

Thanks.
