I've got 1 and half playthroughs under my belt so far, and I gotta say I really enjoy the amount of optional boss battles that are available and the the actual battles themselves.

The opening Ogre fight was interesting to say the least. He is quite the cheater seeing as how the Origins Ogre Fight didn't have waves of Darkspawn backing his arse up.

The Giant Dragon in the mines, was a solid fight. First time I had to reload a save just to set up tactics so my party not only wouldn't die so  much but get them to work altogether in concert.

The Monstrous Spider IS THE DEVIL! Its bad enough the Spiders in the Deep Roads appear much much larger and wickeder (its not a word but lets go with it) but then to have like the ED-209 of Spiders just drop down from seemingly the damn Black City itself. UGH. (Good job.)

And Apparently the Giant Rock Wraith shagged the Broodmother that gave birth to the Ogres because he is a cheating sonuvanug too. Its nice that every fight isn't just another "stab it it until it looks like a sloppy joe" fest. Strategy is good.

The Arishok, I hate him so much. He is a tankbuster, I can't believe running around in circles while my Dog nipped at his heels would buy me enough time to wait for a health or stamina draught to cooldown. I went from being this BAMF Sword and Board guy into feeling like a Mage in Origins. *Smack/Slash* then runaway *get impaled/swear profusely* cheer on Dog *run/heal*.

Audacity "aka the Sundermount Pride Demon", group tactics had to be readjusted because damn Pride Demons are really powerful. I figure the Rock Wraith is his Brother-In-Law or Second Cousin or something because DAYUM.

The Harvester seems to have gone to the Ganondorf School of Final Showdowns because that guy just won't stay dead. It was a great throwback to the Golems DLC and I couldn't believe I was wishing I was a Mage again so I could properly lock his arse down. Also, Ugly as Sin. *shudders* I will never again look at prepackaged Deli Ham with any kind of glee.

As for the Final-Final Boss, what sucked some of the fun out of fight was the stunned pauses for the mid-battle/mid-life crisis monologuing. It really slowed things up, but I was grateful for letting my health/stam/mana regenerate a little bit in those moments. So its really double edged. Otherwise the fight basically combined all the other bosses together (save for the Monstrous Spider, thank the Maker), making for a long tough satisfying final battle.

There are other bosses, more humanoid bosses, but these are the ones that really shined through and made me feel like Hawke truly earned the title of Champion of Kirkwall.Posted Image

Well, took me ages of kiting... recharging stamina, then turning around while pommel strike was ready again, get a few hits in, then resume kiting mode. Felt very lame, but I had no other option -.-

I still think the Rock Wraith was the hardest fight in the game. A close second was the High Dragon.

I almost feel like my game was bugged in some way or another. I played the game on hard, and the difficulty felt great on the act one bosses and on the tougher "trash" packs. As the game went on, though, the bosses seemed to get more mindless (again, with the exception of the High Dragon).

I somehow had an option refuse the duel with the Arishok, so I ended up fighting him and his entourage with my full party of four plus Isabela, and we absolutely dominated them. Pride Demons seemed to just stand there and let me wail on them. On top of that, I actually thought the final boss might have been another one of Varric's exaggerations, because it literally didn't feel possible to die (as I had all seven companions fighting with me).

I fought the Arishok with a mage that had maxed the Spirit Healer specialization and the Elemental school. The Arishok is immune to fire attacks.

The Arishok does have a way of making you feel like a weakling, doesn't he? I kept running around for dear life. xD Damned thing kept knocking me down! And the worst part? I still didn't win. Had to refuse him at some point so I could get on with the story. I'll try again on another playthrough.

I have to agree with you; the boss battles really make this game worthwhile. They force you to resort to tactics and to pay close attention to each member of your team. I love it! There's a great sense of accomplishment (with matching achievement) after you beat them down, too.

The Monstrous Spider will haunt my dreams. I half expected Merrill to pity after Varric finished putting about 300 bolts into it.

The rock wraith was the only fight I had real trouble with.

I thought the Arishok was too easy, and also annoyingly long with a mage, although my 2h reaver took him head on in a much more exciting manner. My mage got to run in circles for a good 15+ minuted spell kiting him. I was never in any danger though, so it was pretty dull.

The problem with alot of the large bosses after the rock wraith was that they missed near all of their attacks if you circle strafed them with the character they were targeting.

The Ancient Rock Wraith is incredibly easy if you have even the most basic understanding of MMO raiding.

I found the High dragon to be the most difficult boss for some reason. There's just too many adds coupled with the High Dragon's heat seeking fireballs. My entire party died except for Merril once I got the dragon down to 1/4 of it's health and I ended up soloing the rest of the dragon with Merril. She's a tough little elf if built properly!

I don't play MMOs D:

the rock wraith was easy on normal but gave me trouble on hard/nightmare. His first form where he uses ranged attacks messes me up, and its harder to plow through quickly on difficulties above normal I guess.

The Rock Wraith was glitched for me. Was playing on Nightmare getting my ass kicked until his steam roller attack started to lag/glitch, and his lightning attacks started HEALING Varric. Couldn't believe what I was seeing.

Merrill is tiny but deadly nuker. She's like a post-apocalyptic cockroach with adorable googly eyes.

I didn't find the Arishok particularly challenging. Either I've been lucky or I didn't get the same fight as you ? Just had to kill all his minions as usual, dispel magic on Saarebas, put everyone out of his way when he whirlwinds then setup a shield bash -> maximized explosive strike combo a few times and that was it.

Couldn't you just have used a mythal's blessing instead ?

Fights that caused me problems :
Anders tranquility quest
The rock wraith
Anything related to Zevran, seriously, ludicrously hard-hitting spiders, a stronger varetheral, the crows with assassins everywhere...
The high dragon. I had to prepare runes, potions and grenades specifically for this battle. Then it went alright.
Huon... WHAT THE HELL ?
That blood mage with a pride demon and a bazillon shades, praying in front of my own statue by the end of the game (sided with templars). Going straight for the mage was a very very bad idea in this case.

The Arishok definitely was one of the most aggravating fights I've encountered over the past year or so. Especially since I had a Mage with the Arcane & Force Mage trees almost filled. Crushing Prison, Gravitic Ring, Dog, and health potions were the only thing that helped, besides the buff spells.

Damnit... reading this, I'm kind of regretful that I skipped the Arishok. I wanted revenge on Isabela, and I thought maybe he'd show up later in the game anyway. Oh well, I'll fight him next time.

I'm going to agree that the boss battles were something else. It was great having to use strategy and tactics to beat some of those creatures. Hard already kind of required some careful planning, but my heart was really pounding after a few of those fights! The Rock Wraith fight was awesome... I think it was the second try when I killed it, and that creature still had more than half its health after defeating both Carver and Anders. Varric earned his spot on my main team by surviving. I had no idea he was that powerful.

The High Dragon.... now what was a battle. By that point, I'd pretty much started depending on Aveline for tanking, Varrick for ranged, and Fenris for staggering people so I could fry them with lightning and blood magic. I got totally owned during that first fight... was not prepared for that at all. I went back a few levels later, and it was still pretty tough because of Fenris. I needed him for when the smaller dragons showed up, but whenever he fought the High Dragon, he took massive damage. I had to just keep him at a distance and use Rally. Etc... sorry to be long-winded, but those fights were sweet. I was just re-living it a bit as I was typing this. The combat was definitely a huge upgrade in this sequel.

I am not looking forward to Nightmare difficulty... lol...

I absolutely LOVE the end boss. Those animated statues are like straight out of a Harryhausen movie, I was positively squealing in delight when they started moving.

I gave him one shot on normal with my 2h warrior, and I absolutely could not get his health down. I went through all my potions in the time he still had plenty of his own left. I need to rethink my 2h warrior build (and my weapon was a bit suboptimal at that stage in the game, which probably also had a big impact.)
