However, it does seem to be an important point into why almost EVERY
First, it seems that Tevinter came to Kirkwall in force for something OTHER than the mineral wealth and the natural harbor that it provided. The slave trade could have been established just as well anywhere else but for some reason they chose Kirkwall.
The mines themselves were apparently discovered AFTER the city had begun to be established, giving the lie to the idea that slaves were brought solely to work the mines, something the 1st Kirkwall History claims.
Second, we learn that underneath the city in the sewers there are hidden passages where hundredes of Tevinter mages were studying in secrecy. It also seems that the sewers and the undercity were specifically designed to accomodate massive blood rituals FAR below the city. Apparently the archon himself had a visitation chamber within the lower levels.
All the blood flowed down but we have no idea where to. At least 1000 slaves were being sacrificed EVERY year to fuel whatever research they were doing. We saw what Orsino could do with one cut of himself and the dead bodies of 3-4 mages, can't imagine what type of power we'd be talking about here <_<
They were doing this to INTENTIONALLY weaken the barrier between the Fade and the living world. The Fade is already weakened anyway because of the trauma associated with being the Slave capital of Thedas. Go down deep enough in Kirkwall and you can easily find demons to converse/bargain/consort with. These demons can even talk with NORMAL, non-magic using men.
There's about a 225 year span between the founding of Kirkwall and the coming of the 1st Blight, when the magisters tried to free the Old Gods and entered the Golden City.
We can assume that the reason every mage in Kirkwall is bat-**** crazy is due to the blood rituals and the weakness of the barrier with the Fade.
Perhaps an Old God was buried under Kirkwall or it was the location where the magisters attempted to breach the Golden City? Conjecture obviously, but interesting to think about!
