I didn't manage to get all of them on my first play-through and don't particularly feel like loading up old saves to pick them all up.
However, it does seem to be an important point into why almost EVERY  mage in Kirkwall is crazy or possessed.

First, it seems that Tevinter came to Kirkwall in force for something OTHER than the mineral wealth and the natural harbor that it provided. The slave trade could have been established just as well anywhere else but for some reason they chose Kirkwall.

The mines themselves were apparently discovered AFTER the city had begun to be established, giving the lie to the idea that slaves were brought solely to work the mines, something the 1st Kirkwall History claims.

Second, we learn that underneath the city in the sewers there are hidden passages where hundredes of Tevinter mages were studying in secrecy. It also seems that the sewers and the undercity were specifically designed to accomodate massive blood rituals FAR below the city. Apparently the archon himself had a visitation chamber within the lower levels.

All the blood flowed down but we have no idea where to. At least 1000 slaves were being sacrificed EVERY year to fuel whatever research they were doing. We saw what Orsino could do with one cut of himself and the dead bodies of 3-4 mages, can't imagine what type of power we'd be talking about here <_<

They were doing this to INTENTIONALLY weaken the barrier between the Fade and the living world. The Fade is already weakened anyway because of the trauma associated with being the Slave capital of Thedas. Go down deep enough in Kirkwall and you can easily find demons to converse/bargain/consort with. These demons can even talk with NORMAL, non-magic using men.

There's about a 225 year span between the founding of Kirkwall and the coming of the 1st Blight, when the magisters tried to free the Old Gods and entered the Golden City.

We can assume that the reason every mage in Kirkwall is bat-**** crazy is due to the blood rituals and the weakness of the barrier with the Fade.

Perhaps an Old God was buried under Kirkwall or it was the location where the magisters attempted to breach the Golden City? Conjecture obviously, but interesting to think about!

After reading your well written post, this is the conclusion I drew. That Kirkwall was the point they used to contact the Golden City, it's all heresay though, until Bioware decides to explain everything.

That's the conclusion I made. I also suspect they were in contact with the dwarves from the primeval thiag as we know that dwarves and the Imperium had close relations.

Perhaps there still is an Old God under Kirkwall, which might explain why Bartrand could hear the song? Or maybe he said something else.. I start to forget after sleep deprivation >.>

He heard the idol singing to him.

It's also possible that the idol was part of the ritual used to enter the Golden City.

......I'm on my second playthrough and I'm trying to get all these Codexes....

....if Kirkwall is where the Magisters broke into the Golden City then the plot for DA2 is even more epic fail than I thought. What a great location and lore...what a great everything. We even meet Profane and Rock Wraiths and a magic idol....and nothing.

Nothing at all. Wait until DLC, folks!

....this would have been a cool game if it delved deeper into these kinds of things.

I too think there's a connection between Kirkwall and either the Golden City or Arlathan. Let's not forget the ruin in the Deep Roads is unlike anything else the dwarves ever made. Arlathan was my first thought. But it could tie into the Golden City just as easily.

Well, all through Origins and DA2 there's plenty of hints dropped that the ancient times were way, way different than people think. Humans, Elves, and more lived together underground.

My reaction is the opposite of that actually.  It gives reason to why all the mages are bat**** crazy and so many of them are realed into Blood Magic.

I still rant about the DA2 story and setting choices, but if this holds true, then maybe it's more of a necessary evil in the narrative process for the entirety of the Dragon Age series.

Dude, if this leads to an epic expansion, then I'll be happy. Especially if it explains why everyone is so crazy. It does really seem like this game got used as a vehicle to introduce a lot of characters and concepts, rather than really running with them. The Profane, the Seekers, the relic and the stuff underneath Kirkwall, and the stuff going on in Orlais all were introduced and hinted at, but not really fleshed out or explained.

I have faith that they'll get to a fair amount of this stuff, but I don't know if it'll be DLC, an expansion, or DA3. I hope they do something with the stuff in the Band of Three codex, though.

In my opinion Origins had a much more satisfying and conclusive ending, but the DLC got a fair bit of criticism for being disappointing and kind of pointless fluff. Maybe they're going for a different formula this time around.

God Almighty, now I'll never be able to look at DA2 again without spitting, knowing how awesome it could have been with a background like that.

Still, there's hope as long as Bioware can write those kind of back stories, Even if they don't use them...
