Perhaps I missed a codex entry or something but are we not supposed to know what the idol actually is?  All i know is that it was made of lyrium and it made people (Varric's bro/Meredith) go bonkers.  Is it tied to demons somehow perhaps?  Has anyone else been wondering this or is it just me?

What got me very, very suspicious is the whole 'hearing the song' thing Varrick brother experienced. And the wardens been mobilizing, sending people to retrace champion's steps in the deep roads. And Cassandra alluded that what they found in the Deep roads were horrific.

I think it will be something connected to why the old gods were corrupted and the song the darkspawn hear when one is awake.

Just a theory, though :)

Meredith was likely already bonkers. It just made her bonker...ers.

No, we don't know what it is. Or how it grows. If you talk to Fenris about the Blade of Mercy, you know that Andreste got one of those things speared into her heart when she died.

Yeah, I just figured it was some form of incredibly pure lyrium that attracted spirits perhaps or something because of it's power. Meredith was just able to harness it because of her obvious experience with lyrium as a templar; she must have had to practice bringing those statues to life!

The song part that Varric and Bartrand hear definitely got me thinking about that. Seeing as all the Darkspawn hear the remaining Archdemon's as a song drawing them.

By mixing it with other, less mystical stuff?

Only part of the blade is Lyrium.  The rest is ordinary metal (using the term "ordinary" quite loosely, given the exotic stuff that blades tend to be made out of in Thedas).

Hawke never finds out - at least not during the course of the game - as he never has a chance to inspect it.  Varric's brother takes it pretty much the moment that they find it.  So it never gets a codex entry because Hawke doesn't know anything about it which means that the player doesn't know anything about it.

And Cassandra alluded that what they found in the Deep roads were horrific.

I suspect that Cassandra knew that it had ended up in Meredith's blade, and that's what triggered the negative comment about the Deep Roads expedition.  The fact that the Knight-Commander of Kirkwall was transformed into a ghastly statue (possibly made of the same type of Lyrium as the idol, given the odd red marbled veins in the statue) while wielding a sword made from the remains of the idol is going to attract a lot of attention, and Cassandra would be expected to know that detail.

actually i think the idol was more of like a rune to the sword. If you notice there was only a bright red glow in the sword than you saw the sword glow but it was more like the sword got powered up.  But the point is that Meredith has been tugging along that piece of tainted lyrium for sometime. It really started to influence her in act 3 and i think she didnt have the idol fused sword until Act 3.

You can see part of the idol in the sword itself, the circle handle part, and then with the red 'veins' it looks almost like the lyrium 'spread' through the sword.

I think you're right, she seemed somewhat civil in act 2 plus she used a normal looking sword to kill the Qunari.  Makes you really wonder whose fault the whole thing is... Flemeth, Hawke, Bartrund?  It's kind of crazy how it changed hands and ended up where it did and caused what it did.

Bioware did a really good job of making the idol reappear in her sword. I agree in act 2 she seemed normal, only as much of a zealot as any templar. I wonder if there are more of these idols anywhere. Could be a big problem. The song reminded me of how the one ring in LOTR brainwashes people to keep it. I kept feeling in this storyline that Hawke at times wasn't the most important and that somethings were random and his fault. I hope we find out more to do with the idol.

Anyone know exactly why Meredith was glowing like possessed. She was able to jump 100s of feet in the air with the swords power activated. I found it strange that she just changed into that lyrium statue.

You know, one thing I was kinda afraid of was Hawke having to use/embrace the idol's power to do something drastic in the end. I kind of glad it didn't come to that.

There is also a small possibility of Varrick lying about the end...

But I guess there are more games ahead, huh?

Question, any of you guys let Varrick keep the piece of the idol during his quest? How does that play out?

I was thinking...Varric and his brother both said the idol sang to them. Justice says the same thing about the lyrium ring when you give it to him in Awakening. Food for thought.

This could very well have nothing to do with the idol, but was anyone else worried when they saw how Meredith's eyes had this red glow during the final battle? Because in a lot of promotional material for DA2, Hawke does the same thing...

The sword in the game trailers has a red orb in the handle like a lyrium lump. Oh dear were making the connections. Your right both have a lyrium part and his eyes glow.

The sword/staff in the trailer is the Staff of Parthalan, I'm pretty sure. The codex entry for it doesn't say anything about the red orb - only that it once belonged to a Magister Parthalan. Here:

During the Exalted March, the Tevinter Emperium was in chaos. Magister Parthalan and two high-ranking magisters were sent to Kirkwall to put down the slave uprising before it spread to the entire empire. However, their legion never arrived at Kirkwall; no one knows what happened to the party, Magister Parthalan--or his fabled staff.

The eerie red glow could have just been added for cinematic effect for all I know, but after seeing what happened to Meredith and the idol, I can't help but feel that there's more to it than that.

My preccccious...
I think the idol was turned into just the hilt and guard of the sword, not the whole blade itself

I'm going to venture a guess and it maybe far fetched.

Bartrand and Meredith are obsessed with the idol. Bartrand in particular behaves like someone who is tainted, hearing the song of the old gods when he is around it. However, he doesn't search for the old gods. He feels perfectly content being in the presence of the idol.

Flemeth has proven that one can survive by chipping a part of their soul into an amulet, and with the correct ritual be reborn.

Perhaps the idol is an Old God itself?

If you look, the idol is 'dwarf skeleton shaped', skull and all, when they find it originally. Then after Meredith taps and taps and taps and taps and taps and.. *breaths* taps the magic within it, she burns out, turning into a 'human skeleton shaped' statue. The sword is completely gone, and all is left is an 'idol'.

What ever it IS, the previous incarnation looked to have been used by a dwarf.

*creepy music*

I interpreted it to be a part of some sort of other, older magic, than what the mages use, and consequently, having no connection to the fade. It's tremendously old, as the thaig it was found in was so old that Dwarves didn't have any paragons, and it's been shown to influence dwarves, which are canonically magic-proof since they cannot connect to the fade. It definitely seems a bit lovecraftian, right down to using a similar visual motif to Bioware's other lovecraft inspired characters (namely, the red lightning that you see on the reapers in ME 1 and 2) Old magic has already been referenced in DA:O, if I remember correctly, as Morrigan said that the magic she would use to trap the archdemon's soul in her unborn child was a form of old magic. I have no doubt that they will further explain in expansions and sequels.

I let Varric keep his piece of the idol... he never mentioned it again and Cassandra didn't ask him about it.  I got some kind of upgraded armor for him, but that might happen just from completing the quest.  It's just called "Varric's Leather Duster"... so... I doubt it's really that special.  Oh, and Bianca leveled up quite a bit.  Again, I have no idea if that's normal.

I have learned this....never give a dwarf a magic red glowy idol. Never ends well.

I couldn’t help but notice that when Hawke first picks up the Idol, that it stays on that frame for a while, while you can kind of hear noises in the background of the sound effects, like wisping sounds. I also noticed that during the fight Mereadith, everyone got hit with the sword... Not a big surprise, but what if even getting touched by thing drives you crazy. The party splits up and leaves Kirkwall after all the events, which is strange and out of character for some of your companions, namely Aviline, who has a husband, a nice life as guard Captain, and an entire Talent Tree dedicated to not losing loved ones anymore.

I don’t know... It just seems... Suspicious, but maybe I’m just thinking too hard on this...
