I think it will be something connected to why the old gods were corrupted and the song the darkspawn hear when one is awake.
Just a theory, though

No, we don't know what it is. Or how it grows. If you talk to Fenris about the Blade of Mercy, you know that Andreste got one of those things speared into her heart when she died.

What got me very, very suspicious is the whole 'hearing the song' thing Varrick brother experienced. And the wardens been mobilizing, sending people to retrace champion's steps in the deep roads. And Cassandra alluded that what they found in the Deep roads were horrific.

The song part that Varric and Bartrand hear definitely got me thinking about that. Seeing as all the Darkspawn hear the remaining Archdemon's as a song drawing them.

Only part of the blade is Lyrium. The rest is ordinary metal (using the term "ordinary" quite loosely, given the exotic stuff that blades tend to be made out of in Thedas).
Perhaps I missed a codex entry or something but are we not supposed to know what the idol actually is? All i know is that it was made of lyrium and it made people (Varric's bro/Meredith) go bonkers. Is it tied to demons somehow perhaps? Has anyone else been wondering this or is it just me?
Hawke never finds out - at least not during the course of the game - as he never has a chance to inspect it. Varric's brother takes it pretty much the moment that they find it. So it never gets a codex entry because Hawke doesn't know anything about it which means that the player doesn't know anything about it.
And Cassandra alluded that what they found in the Deep roads were horrific.
I suspect that Cassandra knew that it had ended up in Meredith's blade, and that's what triggered the negative comment about the Deep Roads expedition. The fact that the Knight-Commander of Kirkwall was transformed into a ghastly statue (possibly made of the same type of Lyrium as the idol, given the odd red marbled veins in the statue) while wielding a sword made from the remains of the idol is going to attract a lot of attention, and Cassandra would be expected to know that detail.

actually i think the idol was more of like a rune to the sword. If you notice there was only a bright red glow in the sword than you saw the sword glow but it was more like the sword got powered up. But the point is that Meredith has been tugging along that piece of tainted lyrium for sometime. It really started to influence her in act 3 and i think she didnt have the idol fused sword until Act 3.

I think you're right, she seemed somewhat civil in act 2 plus she used a normal looking sword to kill the Qunari. Makes you really wonder whose fault the whole thing is... Flemeth, Hawke, Bartrund? It's kind of crazy how it changed hands and ended up where it did and caused what it did.

Anyone know exactly why Meredith was glowing like possessed. She was able to jump 100s of feet in the air with the swords power activated. I found it strange that she just changed into that lyrium statue.

There is also a small possibility of Varrick lying about the end...
But I guess there are more games ahead, huh?
Question, any of you guys let Varrick keep the piece of the idol during his quest? How does that play out?

During the Exalted March, the Tevinter Emperium was in chaos. Magister Parthalan and two high-ranking magisters were sent to Kirkwall to put down the slave uprising before it spread to the entire empire. However, their legion never arrived at Kirkwall; no one knows what happened to the party, Magister Parthalan--or his fabled staff.
The eerie red glow could have just been added for cinematic effect for all I know, but after seeing what happened to Meredith and the idol, I can't help but feel that there's more to it than that.

I think the idol was turned into just the hilt and guard of the sword, not the whole blade itself

Bartrand and Meredith are obsessed with the idol. Bartrand in particular behaves like someone who is tainted, hearing the song of the old gods when he is around it. However, he doesn't search for the old gods. He feels perfectly content being in the presence of the idol.
Flemeth has proven that one can survive by chipping a part of their soul into an amulet, and with the correct ritual be reborn.
Perhaps the idol is an Old God itself?

What ever it IS, the previous incarnation looked to have been used by a dwarf.

I let Varric keep his piece of the idol... he never mentioned it again and Cassandra didn't ask him about it. I got some kind of upgraded armor for him, but that might happen just from completing the quest. It's just called "Varric's Leather Duster"... so... I doubt it's really that special. Oh, and Bianca leveled up quite a bit. Again, I have no idea if that's normal.Rheia wrote...
You know, one thing I was kinda afraid of was Hawke having to use/embrace the idol's power to do something drastic in the end. I kind of glad it didn't come to that.

I don’t know... It just seems... Suspicious, but maybe I’m just thinking too hard on this...
