I couldn’t help but notice that when Hawke first picks up the Idol, that it stays on that frame for a while, while you can kind of hear noises in the background of the sound effects, like wisping sounds. I also noticed that during the fight Mereadith, everyone got hit with the sword... Not a big surprise, but what if even getting touched by thing drives you crazy. The party splits up and leaves Kirkwall after all the events, which is strange and out of character for some of your companions, namely Aviline, who has a husband, a nice life as guard Captain, and an entire Talent Tree dedicated to not losing loved ones anymore.

I don’t know... It just seems... Suspicious, but maybe I’m just thinking too hard on this...

Hawke and Varric touched the idol in the deep roads and nothing happened to them. And seriously, if I end up having to fight a crazed Hawke in a later game, I am going to give Bioware the DX chop.

Remember that in Origins (http://dragonage.wik...x_entry:_Lyrium), dwarves only have a resistance to raw lyrium, not an immunity. When you talk to Bodahn at the party camp, he thinks Sandal's behavior/ mental capacity is due to being "lyrium addled," having spent so much time in the deep roads before being found. Then we have Bartrand as another example of what lyrium can do to a dwarf.

From their years of being given processed lyrium, which is supposed to be safer, by the Chantry, the older templar (templars?) suffer from memory loss, paranoia and near-constant nightmares. Add on the "raw lyrium exposure" Meredith gets by carrying that sword on her back for however many years, and it's no wonder she sees blood mages everywhere and has that crazy look in her eyes. :[

What we know.
1- Bartrand 'fed' the idol.
2- A small piece caused serious problems.
3-Corrupted lyrium appears in Act 2, following your return from the Deep Roads in your mine and other areas it's spreading.
4-There is a growing sense of 'problems' in Kirkwall, and it gets worse as time goes on. (Side effect of the corrupted lyrium's presence driving others mad.
5-The idol was stored in a temple.
6-The dwarves fed on the red lyrium and took the appearance of 'rock' things that were addicted and consumed with an undying hunger.
7-Meredith, following her 'death' which occurred before she was killed, took the shape of the goddess figure the idol was of.

When is the red lyrium ever said to be corrupted?

It's not, the only thing we know is that there is in fact a form of corrupted lyrium. Given that corrupted lyrium is KNOWN, if "red" lyrium veins were the corrupted ones, someone in the expedition would have known that when they saw all the red veins everywhere.

Note that Varric says that something seems unusual about the lyrium idol when they first find it. There's something about the idol other than just lyrium, I think. But specifically what, who can say?

It may come up again in future games. As for Cassandra knowing about the idol, that's a given. The entire battle was witnessed by an army of Templars.

Although the idol probably has a lot more significance than this, it technically didn't do anything different than regular lyrium does, though perhaps it is more powerful. Regular lyrium grants the templar powers(and templars have no magical power to begin with) and strengthens the powers of magi. It also drives people who spend too much time around lyrium crazy. The lyrium in the game did both of those things, just... more.

If I remember correctly, the thing that appeared in Bartrand's place was labeled a rock spirit, which (again if I remember correctly) is simply some sort of creature from the Deep Roads attracted to lyrium or some such thing.

Lyrium is a powerful substance, and I'm not so sure it's entirely understood. Combine with the fact it was found in a place so old even the Dwarves have forgotten it... Whatever it is, it's the farthest thing from normal, that's for sure.

I definitely think it was driving Meredith to her extremes at the end there. I thought it was nice, tying together that deep roads expedition and adding importance by linking in to the end. Maybe even hinting at more.

When I held the tab key during my spelunking in caves, I'm quite sure that it said "corrupted lyrium" while I was near those reddish lyrium desposits. I'll try to keep an out to confirm this the next time I run through a cave to confirm that. My personal theory it this is artifact from the anicent dwarves who lived in the primordial thaigs and that it's made of that corrupted lyrium substance. Although maybe the suggestion that it's from Arlathan that I saw someone else make could be right - who knows atm.

Wasn't it an ethereal golem? Like, a golem made of ghost, or something?

I have thought of something...

In the elven legends, Fen'harel is said to have tricked the Creators in the skies, and the Forgotten Ones (the mean gods), into the abysses. Then he sealed them and stand on the 'mortal' world, alone.

From what we know, the lyrium idol was found 'deeper than anyone ever was' in the Deep Roads (pretty abyssal to my tastes). We also know the idol sings to Bartrand and that he 'fed' it (blood, flesh). He even said the idol wanted to be venered.

Sounds like this idol is not 'just made of pure lyrium', like Varric said when you find it on the altar. What about this idol could be... one of the Forgotten Ones? Trapped? Just an hypothesis, but still... We know the 'religious' story about gods being tricked, but spirits and demons never talk about gods or even god-being. Maybe the 'Creators' and the 'Forgotten Ones' aren't really god, but terrible spirits or unknown forces, we don't know, but I still think this idol may have a link with all they say about those Forgotten Ones.

Maybe there is also something about the Old Gods in that (they also sings and have some control over the ones that 'venere' them - darkspawns-). But I can't really make links between Old Gods and Forgotten Ones yet...

Something 'imprisoned' into a little statue that sings, glows and asks to be fed and venered.

the idol corrupts and that is in some way connected to the corruption of the old gods. thats what I got from it and the wardens are investigating the ruins in the Deep Roads, could be where it all began...the blights, the end of the old gods, etc.

I'm thinking it's the same song, too. However, given the info from the Band of Three, I'm more inclined to believe in the "Tevinters opened a portal to the Fade and now we have Darkspawn" part of the Chant.

Perhaps I missed a codex entry or something but are we not supposed to know what the idol actually is?  All i know is that it was made of lyrium and it made people (Varric's bro/Meredith) go bonkers.  Is it tied to demons somehow perhaps?  Has anyone else been wondering this or is it just me?

What's weird to me is that lyrium is toxic. You can't touch it. But this 'pure' lyrium everyone and their mother touches.

Does anyone have a screenshot of what the idol was? I never really got a good, long look at it.

Also was expecting Hawke to go a little nuts after touching it and carrying around the shard to give to Sandal. It worked its ways on Meredith, Bartrand, and even Varric. So, why doesn't it do anything to Hawke?

No screenshot, but it was about the size of a dinner plate from what I recall. It looked like a twisted metal sculpture of some kind--not sure what of--but made of lyrium, so it was kinda glowy blue.

yes the rivers of blood in kirkwall had probably fueled magic to open this portal to the fade.

It's clearly the tiki idol from the Brady Bunch.

Not a good screenshot since Hawke's got his greasy palms covering a fourth of it but you get the idea.

Thank you for the screenshot. Much appreciated. Now if only Hawke would get his mits off of it... D:

Looks like a figure with an almost snakey halo or wreath behind them. I'm not sure it's got a thick enough build to be a dwarf. There's some speculation on the Wiki that the Primeval Thaig is Elven in origin -- could the idol be depicting some kind of elven deity? It's got a disturbing face -- is it a darkspawn? It looks naked (and gender neutral because of it) and like it's encased in Lyrium. And like it's got a little circlet like Merideth wore...

Arrrrgh. ><
