Avaline obvious change through several sets
Merille changes 1 set.
Ander changes 1 set.

Does anyone else switch the appearance of their armors?

I've heard Isabella gets a different costume, but I've only heard it once and never saw it myself.

Fenris gets only some new accessories only if you Romance him, Varric stays the same.

Beth/Carver change if/when you get them back at the end

I just realized that Carver's armor in the Fake Telling at the beginning is not the Templar armor. It is actually the Gray Warden Armor. Does Carver put on the Templar Armor if he joins the Templars? or he defaults to Warden Armor regardless?

I've romanced with Isabela and Merrill and their armor changed. Merrills armor becomes a silver chainmail, a lot cooler than the original and Isabela gets a red armband, heavier looking pauldron on one of her shoulders and a black corset. I've heard that Anders' armor becomes darker.
It seems that all of the companions follow the same rule - their armor changes only if you romance them.

Avelines appearance changes only as the story goes and Varrics armor never changes, probably because neither of the two can be romanced.

Oh and yes, Carver puts on a templar armor if you dont take him to the deeproads.

Fenris seems to be the only one whose clothes don't change(other than the red armband... and the Hawke crest).

Anders is the only exception, his amror will change when you do the quest Justice, whether you romance him or not

I romanced Isabella but she didn't change armor. Only Anders got a bit darker, rest kept the same. Aside for the dumbing down on customization, this was a huge bummer for me as well. I'm really starting to dislike Bioware with all the disappointments DA2 brought me.

Isabela's is buggy. You don't even have to romance her, just sleep with her. So far the only fix is respeccing at BE.

How does Ander's aromor change? Please tell me I don't have to romance him for him to change it.

It's a black version mostly. Black feathers, black leather, etc. And the top of his coat becomes buttoned instead of showing a mangled cloth.

So once I respeced Isabela her outfit changed so thanks for the tip Malja.

As for Anders, his outfit changes in act 3 after you do a few quests for him.

Theres a bug with Isabella's romance armor change. All you have have to do is make use the Maker's Sigh potion and she should have it. Then you just need to redistribute all her points...

For Merril's armour to change do you have to romance her or can you get it from just being friendly with her?
Though I like her green Dalish outfit over the white one I've seen, I just wanna know :P.

Is there a plot reason for her change?  I'm curious because I like that Avaline changes her armor when she gets a promotion in the guards, and that Fenris just adds a small token he got from Hawke (although I think it's a bit of a corny tell that Anders changes to darker sleeker clothes just as he's about to go all terrorist on you).  But since I haven't romanced Merril, I haven't seen any character or story reason for her to switch to such a significantly different costume.  Does it come up in conversation at any point?

I personally wish I could've gotten a conversation option to comment on Anders new clothes :P
If we can't comment I don't think the companions can :/.

I think Carver uses Warden armour in the exaggerated intro to avoid spoiling his becoming a Templar. since the DA2 Warden armour is different from Origins you're not likely to think "oh Carver's a Warden?". why Bethany doesn't change, well it's probably because her Warden and Circle armour wouldn't show off her exaggerated properties

anyway
Aveline changes to Guard uniform
Anders changes to a darker version of his outfit after Act 3 companion quest
Merrill changes if romanced
Isabella and Fenris wear red armbands if romanced
Bethany has Circle or Warden robes
Carver has Templar or Warden armour

Isabella's armor will change if you romance her (need to use makers sigh if you have black emporium. Its currently bugged.)

Anders will change after Justice

Merrill changes when you romance her

Beth/Carver get circle robes/templar uniform, or the Warden uniform.

Avaline gets three armor types

Fenris gets scarf/crest if you romance him - no other changes

Varric has no outfit changes

Sebastian has no outfit changes.

Merrill's armor change is the best, she looks so pretty in all that white/silver. :)

She doesn't talk about it, but my guess is so that she fits better into Hightown. Posted Image
