Not sure what encounter you're discussing but my first Nightmare play through saw me go immediately to Orzimmar, reason being i wanted Oghren Asap (plus, i was female doorf noble).
I had -no- trouble with any of the encounters except for 3 in there. The revenant kicked my ass (But i did kill the dragon easily), the "Proving after dark" encounters saw me slaughtered (the additional 4man champion squads in proving grounds) and i spent about 2hours trying to kill Jarvia ( this was my own fault since i refused to go back for supplies) - once i went back for some pots and returned it was a first time job.
The only reason these were awkward - i attempted these encounters first. Which, you shouldn't. I was around level 5-6.
Overall i've found Nightmare difficulty to be too easy. Seriously.
I love this game, but it can throw some serious bull**** your way sometimes
