Fenris! What could have been?

Secondly teh dude is like 5 feet tall carrying around a sword that is taller than him, given I know it shouldn't really matter all that much its just there for aesthetics and not actual in world physics or whatever it would have looked much more sensible on the back of a hulking qunari.
Third is the fact that he seems very knowledgeable about the qun and its practices and even gets you to duel (and my duel i mean horribly massacred by the...) Arishok.
Looking back at what I wrote these reasons don't all seem that great and I'm kinda grasping for straws, but i feel if he were a qunari he at least wouldn't be so whiney.

And whinines is in the eye of the beholder, too. There will always be people who dislike some characters and adore the others, and some who do not share the same opinion. Imho, I think this shows the strength of the writing, provoking a wide range of emotion is preferable to unanimous indifference.

Fenris is way to overly dramatic . Much like most JRPG heroes are.
Hell most of DA2 has alot of overly dramatic heroes/heroines. I mean I can understand Anders plight. It's like being jewish when the ****s where still in power. But Fenris is just a baby back -bleep- for not letting what happen die.
I guess you could equate this emo to a human who's been raped by the opposite sex and resents that sex for the rest of their life? I don't know. Fenris does annoy the hell out of me though.

Not sure why you think he should be Qunari. Short guys with big swords are cool in my opinion.
EDIT: I have a feeling that Tal'Voshoth you meet during "Blackpowder Promise" might become a playable character in a later DLC.

Fenris is the result of an unholy union of a JRPG and Wolverine (from X-Men).

yeah there is actually a wolverine anime comingout pretty soon, while not jrpg i think culture wise they may not have gotten the concept of his character down... still looks cool though.
also i hope the tal'voshoth in that quest doesnt look so genericif he were to become a dlc character.
and finally i didn't hate fenris in anyway, I really just wish there was a qunari companion, but in all honesty it probably would have been wierd considering the enemy you faced throughout act two.

That Quanari Mage prisoner that you had to lead to freedom in ACT 1.
He looked so bad ass, if he was a companion I would of used him all the time for intimidation factor alone.

I found Fenris to be a little whiner, mostly on par with the whinefest comming from the maincharacters from games like DMC and FF.
Unfortunately, I just finished the game last night and managed to completely miss the sidequest that lets you recruit Fenris, so I'll need to wait until my next playthrough to find out if he's any good!

him being a qunari with pretty much the same backstory would have made me like him significantly more, and he coulda been tied into the story much better that way too. maybe make him alittle more "zen" and alittle less "brooding" and you got a winner.

He definitely went down fast for the amount of gear I'd piled on him.

I thought he would be nothing but depressing and a downer all the time when I first read up on his character, and didn't intend to bring him with me, but he really didn't do much at all when I finally got him. Yea, he has some anger and angst issues, but he was for the most part logical about his dislike and hatred in my game.
There was some civil banter between him and Bethany when she asked him about his opinion of mages. He told Bethany, in a very calm way, that he didnt hate all mages or blame them for what they were, and knew that there were good mages with good intentions, but the fact remained that they all had great potential to do horrible things not in their control, and that it made him uncomfortable and thought they needed to be kept under watch because of it.
The only mage he didn't get along with in my party was Anders, and that is because Anders was a complete b*tch to him any time he opened his mouth. Anders was way more whiny and emo than Fenris was by far, and the complaining about how horrible he was treated because he was a mage never seemed to cease. I was really disappointed because I adored Anders in Awakenings and wanted to romance him, but couldn't tolerate his new personality enough.
Anders even asks Fenris if he thought about committing suicide once, and Fenris was entirely appealed at the idea of taking his own life and asked him why he would want to do that, while Anders thought it was a good idea and made sense for someone like Fenris to do it. Anders also at one point told Fenris he was more of wild dog than a person, in a pretty harsh tone, for no real reason. In the banter it always seems everyone else was picking on Fenris and calling him broody (Varric for instance), when he honestly never did anything broody or whiny himself. Yet by Act 3 everyone seemed to like him, he was being friendly and joking around with everyone and talking about hanging out and drinking and gambling together.
I actually suspected he would up and leave if I defended the mages at the end, I had full on Rivalry with him, but he actually told me while he didn't like the idea, he trusted my choice, and stayed with me and helped me fight the templars.

Am I the only one that didn't find him that whiny? No, you're not the only one. He's actually my favorite character in the game, coming in just ahead of Aveline and Bethany. He's hilarious, logical, bitter for understandable reasons, and everything he says is coated in a nice layer of cynicism and dark sarcasm. Whenever he talked about his past, sure, he was angry and bitter, but I didn't find him "broody" or "whiny." He got a little pissy with my mage Hawke at the end of his recruitment quest, but he never made any huge demands of her. And after having every single apostate she's encountered try to kill her so far, or become possessed, she's starting to come around to his way of thinking.

Hear, hear! Though I think the concept of Fenris is a cliche his actual character is pretty cool. He's not nearly as whiny as Anders, but then again Anders some how manages to out whine Alistair.lizzbee wrote...

So I too sided with the mages at the end, and Fenris did leave me. He was so easy to defeat. Well...not so much defeat as tell him, "come back" and he was like "okay!" and then skipped around holding hands killing templars with our giant swords (that last part didn't really happen).
