This moment, with the Ostagar theme playing in the background was the most emotionally gripping for me in the whole game. I felt a bit choked up hearing that theme again and I wanted to go with them. I enjoyed the game overall, but the story in DA:O was so much more epic ... and tragic.
There were two redeeming characters in DA2 though - the Arishok and Meredith. The Arishok made me want to see Par Vollen and know more about the enigmatic Qunari, and Meredith was a great villain - so conflicted with good intentions at the core, but sadly didnt get fleshed out enough in the story.
Just my two cents.

Yea' cause it was weird to be saved by her in Act 2 then in Act 3 she's all insane with idol fever. I think you should have spent more time getting to know her...ya know not insane.
The Qunari were a blast indeed.
Did you happen to notice their armor I was like "I WANT IT!!!"

I had a grudging respect for the Arishok. He was kind of a tool, and I completely disagree with the Qun, but at the same time, he seemed very... I don't know. He was somewhat noble, and I guess maybe I respected his wisdom. Meh, I really don't know how to explain it. It was like an informal master and student relationship. I was glad I didn't have to fight him.
Meredith, on the other hand... lol... well, I was playing as a mage, and over the course of the game I'd done some pretty noble things. I didn't agree with her at all, and I didn't like her attitude. It's kind of (and by that, I mean, a LOT) like the X-men. Sure, Magneto is pretty evil, but should all mutants be judged by his potential for chaos? Anyway... she was a good villain, but I only felt disgust by her treatment of the mages. She took it way too far.
As for the final point... I thought Hawke's family life provided a lot of heartbreaking moments. I really wanted to get along with Carver, but it just didn't work out that way. Every time I tried to be nice, he'd just say something rude, and eventually we were just neutral towards one another... lol. Ah well, we made one hell of a good team in the end! Maybe that's the best I could have hoped for.
