Least favorite: Merrill... sorry, but I am not a fan of arrogant Dalish elves. The less I say about that, the better.
lol... we don't see this the same way at all OP. Fenris was actually my second favorite. I played as a mage, so we had some pretty interesting conversations. Getting him on my side was an involved process, more so than say, Anders, who is much more agreeable.
Ugh... now that I think about it, Aveline and Varric were pretty cool too. Add them to runners-up for favorite. Bioware did an excellent job on making all the companions really come alive.

Fave: Varric... very funny.
Least: Aveline.. very boring so far.
Gameplay wise:
Fave: Anders, he's like the perfect healer.
Least: Varric... he just seems to suck, which is a shame.
Note I have not used Merril or Carver at all really, and very little Isabella because my Hawke is like her twin.

Least Favorite: Merrill. She was cute at times, but I felt she was mostly being a brat who had to be right and her refusal to understand why everyone had an issue with what she was doing was childish and obnoxious. I mean, she actually got Fenris and Anders to AGREE on something. That takes something special.
Varric is so awesome though I almost say he has to tie with Fenris. Bethany ranks as my favorite female, but Aveline is really high up there too. I WANTED To love Anders, and at times I did in the game, but overall there was just glimpses of the Anders from Awakening (who was my FAVORITE companion in that). The character had been destroyed as surely as his mind was by the end.

Favourite is Merrill, followed by Varric, Followed by Aveline
Hated everyone else but probably Fenris the most because of how he kept saying Mages are essentially scum or something along those lines.. Hated Anders for what he did to the chantry and for abusing Merrill and saying she should be dead. lol
Hated Isabella for causing the whole Qunari incident and finding out its nearly all her fault.. And she was kind of annoying and disgusting anyway. I mean "Stick your thumb up your ass and I win" wtf? thats sick! lol
Sebastian annoyed me since he wouldn't bloody man up and go take Starkhaven back, and for saying how the mages are overstepping themselves and the templars are right.. i mean they kind of were overstepping themselves though.. I liked his character though.
so to sum it up: Liked Merrill, Varric and Aveline. Romanced Merrill, Loved Varrics Nicknames and Stories and Aveline.. well shes been with me since the start and got her husband to stand down and all.. shes cool
Hated Isabella, Anders and Fenris - Thats why Isabella will be handed over to Qunari next game, Anders dead and Fenris given to his master. For my current game though Anders is dead, Fenris given to master and Isabella ditched me after getting the book
Sebastian= Meh
=D
Ohh forgot about siblings: I haven't had Bethany yet so no comment, But Carver was awesome. Great Charecter, probably my favourite even. Siding against the Templars alongside Cullen and well... All of them lol to stop that nut Meredith from taking me.. Then they all kneeled before me =D

Both Merrill and Fenris left me lukewarm, but they were only guest stars in my party, so I didn't give either of them much of a chance.

I disagree with you on the merill thing but thats besides the point. In my romance with merrill I found that that particular romance (ive only ever finished a romance with her, also parenthetically, does anyone know if you can romance more than one person? like break up with someone and romance someone else?) to be pretty boring. My main complaint is that it diddnt really feel like a relationship like in jade empire (even though technically you could only befrend the chick, it still felt like a realistic friendship) or either mass effect (even though the sex scene was boring as HAELL in 2) and even dragon age. This was mostly due to the fact that you couldonly talk to merrill a couple times per chapter, which really just made her feel like an aquaintance who my character has slept with and she occasionally calls "cookiepants" (yeupp, that actually happened). Was really hoping for a relationship more simmilar to liara from ME1 and 2 mostly because we could actually, you know, CONVERSE on more than one subject... anyway.

Least Fav: Fenris. It got to the point that his anger to my little sis got me so peeved off I reloaded me turning him into a bloodbath just for giggles. Nobody messes with my family.
Overall though all the characters were outstanding (except Fenris). I really liked any of the dynamic between Varric and Merril, he was so nice to her without any reason to be.

Runner up: Merrill. She's so adorable.
Least favorite: Isabela or Anders. I didn't like either very much. Anders blew up the Chantry, while Isabela... well... yeah.

I didn't like Sebastian at all though. Then again, that's probably because I didn't decide to spring for the DLC until yesterday when I reached Act III so I didn't really have time to 'get' him.

As for not liking someone, as much as I liked Anders in Awakening, I'm not that fond of him here. He's not the fun happy guy he was in Awakening.

I am suprised at how good Avaline developes as a character over the course of the game though. At last, a companion who has a love life thats not the player character.
Worst: Anders, and not becuase of what he did (that made him more interesting) but there wasn't much to him for most of the game, he was just there.

So far my favorite three characters are Merril, Varic, and Avaline both on in-game 'feel' and personality and metagaming usefulness. My least favorite is Anders and Isabella. Sebastian gets an honrable mention as well for least favorite.
I don't mind Fenris as much as one might think. His is a character that grows on me a bit and while I think he's wrong to universally condemn all mages, I certainly understand why he does.

Least Favorite: Merrill all the way. She is a cute little thing but that mirror mess and her inability to realize what she's getting into gets to me. No wonder the demon went after her. She's tragic and can be easily led.
Runner up to favorite is Varric. He is so awesome. He can spin stories for me everyday. I would have ran off with him than what I did with Anders.

Least: Anders of Sebastien. I didn't much care for Anders during Awakening though, so I may have already prejudged him....and Sebastien...Leliana pulled off the whole chantry bit without forcing it down your throat, but there's times I just want to kick Sebastien off the pier, especially when you have him and Fenris in your party,

As for least favorite, I really can't decide yet. If I was forced to choose now, i would pick Isabella, but I havent given her a fair shake and played with her a lot to check out her party banter, not to mention act 3 content

Fenris has dry whit and some fun scenes where he kills people by punching holes in their chest which is neat. Wish he could stand up straight.
Aveline is fun, I thought she was dull at first but I grew to love her.
Varric is by far the easiest to love. Hes that side kick everyone wishes they had.
Overall I didn't find any charectors I hated (I really hated Morrigan and Sten)

I also love him for his "that son of a ****... sorry mother" line. Another quality Brian Bloom character. I can't decide if i like him as Varric or Kane more.
My least favourite is probably Anders. He's the only character that i didn't get a max friendship or rivalry with, mostly because i didn't find him very interesting and didn't think that the game played up his plight well enough.
This had a knock on-effect during the endgame for me... considering he does something that is absolutely vital to the story, i think that he should have been developed a lot better. Really, the build up to his bomb thing shouldn't have started in Act III by picking up excrement in a sewer.
