Question for the disappointed people

The combat mechanism / gameplay was just plain mediocre. Horrible for a Tactical Rpg, Terrible for an Action Rpg / Hack n Slash. And I already disliked the combat in Origins, which I didn't even finish, disgusted by the boring, repetitive and endless battles.
So why bother ?

Twice.
The first time, I couldn't put it down... up until act 2. By act 2, I was just tired of it, and played just to complete it.
The second time, even though I beat it in fewer hours, it took me far more days to actually finish.
I am only disappointed in this game because I expected more from BioWare. If this were a game by some other company, without the reputation of BioWare, then I'd be fine with it. It's not an awful game. It is, however, an awful BioWare game.

I'd like to think my complaints are informed by gameplay, though I could see why defenders or apologists might be a bit wary of short/trollish reviews popping up on metacritic (many of the positive reviews are also short).
I didn't particularly like the gameplay. I found elements which I previously enjoyed (planning out the character build, figuring out tactics for battle) were less robust, and tactical planning was subsumed by a need to hammer A constantly and poor ability to "plan" given the wave format.
I felt side-swiped in my Merrill relationship since her end-quest-personal scene airs first in Act 3, which will confuse you at the time, and leave you without closure after the quest.
I felt slightly robbed that despite being a completionist in my approach, certain achievements are locked out depending on gameplay choices. This goes without saying with some sorts of achievements (gettting the rivalry one while being friendly to everyone), but I was vaguely annoyed that the departure of a character meant I couldn't get the achievement for... "gathering all resources"?! Really? You have to have everyone around for that?!
I felt annoyed that what had been a large criticism of a previous game (Mass Efffect 1's repeated dungeon areas) was repeated here, and in several interviews the developers seriously act surprised.
I felt annoyed that what was a problem DA:O at launch (broken Achievements related to Day 1 DLC) wound up happening AGAIN with the sequel.
I felt annoyed that you fight the same two bosses regardless of who you side with in the end. Your player has no agency, you tell HIS story, but his choices don't affect the gameworld - or always have the same effect in the end.
I felt annoyed that the conversational options often seemed so poorly written. I wanted to play a smooth rogue, but when it came to flirting he was anything but.
I felt annoyed that in-game lore went by the wayside. They spent all this time building up a world and rules in the first game, and it got crapped on this time around. Demons summon abominations out of the ground?! Really?! Mages teleport around? You still have the codex entry saying that's impossible? Really?!
I don't think it's about hating a game because you want to hate it, because you want to troll. I really wanted to like this game, and I think I can even overlook bad gameplay when a story and characters are particularly amusing and my choices matter (see: Alpha Protocol). Unfortunately, this game was a perfect storm of suck. I bought it because I trusted Bioware, and apparently that was misplaced.

Apparently I'm a masochist to put myself through a second playthrough of this game, but I wanted to see what it was like to side with the Templars.
The Game was utter crap. If you really want me to go into it, read my huge critic on the Registered Owners general discussion Constructive Criticism thread on Page 40.

Wasted potential and lack of a focused story is what aggrivated me. I think with the long term story narrative it would have benefitted from a more sandbox approach. There seemed to have been good ideas that could have been fully realized given another 6 months to a year. The story definatly needed a few more passes over it to be streamlined. Didn't mind the new combat system, I found Origins to be aggrivating at times due to combat. Hated lack of customization though, especially for companions. Also wish there were social skills, so you can bluff or intimidate as appropriate.

Certainly did not hate it, but did not love it, either.

That said, I am a long time fan of RPGs and was unable to play DA2 beyond act 1. It is also enough said.

To the beginning of Act 2 on my friend's

Was a bit worried/disappointed by the demo and I really hoped that the full game will be better, but it just confirmed that it's a rushed product made without love, only to cash in on DA:O's success.

Disappointed with (without going into copious amounts of detail or I would be here all night typing):
- Overall plot
- Main sub-plot of each act (especially Act 1, least dissapointed with Act 2)
- Structure of acts, where every single quest, even the main quests, are more or less MMO quests in the same areas over and over.
- Re-use of areas. Not just the caves and houses - but the fact that Act 2 and Act 3 actually take place in the exact same place as Act 1, and you re-visit all the same areas, and more or less do all the same quests again.
- Your decisions do not matter in the slightest. Absolutely regardless of which option Hawke picks, the final result is the same.
- In fact, it feels like if Hawke had never existed, the events of the game would have more or less played out identically (with a few minor modifications) leading to the same ending.
- So much for Hawke being the 'most important character in Dragon Age'
- More like the most unlucky - keeps appearing at the wrong place at the wrong time
- Your party members are incredibly cardboard (this is somewhat typical for Bioware - who are fond of stereotypes for party members, BUT you get such LITTLE dialogue with each party member in this game, they never expand into anything)
- What does Aveline think of the political situation in Kirkwall? What does she think of my relationship with whoever I decide to romance? What does she think of my past? What is her past? I have no answers to any of these - because you never get to talk to her about it.
- How many proper 'character' conversations do you get with most of the characters in the game? Maybe 8 per character? If even that. Carth had more than that on Taris alone in KOTOR.
- Combat system is incredibly broken (characters are 'leashed together', hold doesn't work, enemy rogues are ridiculously OP, on harder difficulties enemies have FAR too much HP, especially bosses, the waves system is terrible and destroys all semblance of strategy and just turns the game into a giant kiting exercise).
- etc.
Phew. To me personally, worst game Bioware have ever released. But only a little behind Jade Empire. Even though Jade Empire was very short, and it's combat system wasn't good per se, it was still far less broken than this game's, and Jade Empire felt like it had high production values when it came to the ambience of areas, etc.
I still think DA2 is a decent game - playable certainly - but nowhere near usual BIoware standards. For reference, my ratings of some Bioware games:
KOTOR: 9.5/10
Jade Empire: 7/10
Mass Effect: 7.5/10
Mass Effect 2: 8/10
Dragon Age Origins: 9.5/10
Dragon Age 2: 5.5/10
(To me, 5 is dead on average, unlike the major reviewing sites, who seem to use 8 as average).

The game is no where near as long as 40 hours. I did like 70% of the side quests and completed it at around the 27 hour mark.
Funny. I beat the game twice, and both times took about 41-42 hours for me.

And got to Act 2 with my Rogue.
After the Warrior i was like "And thats it? What happend to the rest of the game"
So i startet a new one to really take a look if i missed something.
I tryed to do anything different in my 2nd game but always got to the same results.
I dont really Hate the game. Im just dissapointed. I dont get it. Why Bioware? You are such a great Company. The best one when it comes to RPGs. How could something like DA2 happen?

I'm dissapointed with the fact that not enough time was spend on this game, making it feel rushed and unpolished. Like the youngest son in a big family...The 'oldskool' RPG elements have been stripped away, painfull...
I was lured into the DA franchise with the "Spiritual succesor to BG2"meme. DA:O delivered on that promise, DAII did not.

There is quite a bit of polarization going on right now and I have a question to those who generally disliked the game. Whatever reasons you disliked for, how long did you play Dragon Age 2?
Please respond with one of following:
-Demo only.
-Only to Act 1(around 10 hours).
-Only to Act 2(around 25 hours).
-Only to Act 3(around 40 hours).
-Beat the game.
Please be honest! And this is only for those who are dissapointed with DA2!
I beat the game (in 55 hours).
It is not that it is the worst game I have played to, but I find it inferior to DAO in almost everything.
From purely objective critic about DA2 which lack many things and seems totally rushed: lack of isometric camera, removal of all descriptions of items, recycled area, the absence of (social) skills, the choices that don’t change anything to he outcomes…
To more subjective fact: I prefer the slower combat of DAO, the story of DAO, the less combat oriented gameplay of DAO, the graphic style of DAO…
The only real improvement I see in DA2 is the spells and talents trees and a improvement of the graphics quality (however it is counterbalanced by the ugly futurist graphic style of the interface and the inventory).

Demo but I own the sig ed. I can't force myself to complete the demo, I get bored and go back to DCUO.
Meanwhile I made sweet sweet love to DAO and DA Awakenings and all the DLC except for the Witch HUnt
