So my first play through in origins was a rogue, and the second one was an arcane warrior.. and she was a beast..
There was very little in the game that she couldn't run head first into and come out ontop.

So I'm playing through Da2 right now with my new Rogue, and then plan to try to make an Arcane warrior.
First off.. I never played threw awakening.. Though I may go back and do that with my Arcane Warrior just to add some extra story elements (if there are any?).  But the question really is the Arcane warrior.

But things have changed so drastically from DA1 to DA2!
I would no longer have the option to  use our magic stat inplace of strength.  Which means if I'm going to equip armor I need con and str instead of magic.. However this might not be bad.

My question really comes down to, as I never tried it yet.
If I have the str/con to equip a sword or hammer or whatever can my mage wield it?

The improved graphics to rock armor looks amazing.  And I find in the new game my mages rockin rock armor and arcane armor tend to be more survivable than Fenris and my rogue (I can't stand how slow meridith attacks when in "tank" mode).

So if I go arcane I'd obviously be firing less magic than the typical mage (being that I'd be sustaining arcane and rock armor).  But that's ok since they are just percentages of mana.. So if I could have mana enough to fire a spell or two inbetween sword swings I think I'd do ok.

Thoughts on the "modern" arcane warrior?
Anyone know for sure if  I dump STR and con into my mage if she'll be able to carry a sword and shield (or just a huge sword?)

I dont think a mage can ever carry a sword.
One of the requirements of most swords is
1. Two Handed Skill
2. Sword and Shield Skill

Regardless of STR, a mage can never acquire these skills.
Meaning all you will get from the Str, is the Fortitude bonus, which is pointless anyway, since you can get +100 to Fort from the Force Mage Tree.

Damn.. I didn't realize they required the "skill" too..
That kinda sucks.. I liked how DA1 really didn't require anything but the stats for it..

crud!

So much for my arcane warrior.. :(

sorry, OP, but the AW spec was removed from DA2 ( it was my favorite mage spec in Origins ).

not only that, mages can now only equip staves.

so, it is not possible to build an AW like you did in Origins.

it might still be possible to build a melee-oriented, "battle-mage" using some combo of the DA2 mage specs ( Blood Mage, Spirit Healer, Force Mage ), and there are some build threads on the forum re that.

but, alas, no "true" AW............

You don't need a sword. Mages can melee with staffs now. Get some strength so you can wear some decent armor. Get a bunch of defensive sustain abilities like rock armor, arcane shield, etc. Then pump up your con, spec for blood mage and use your health for your spells and healing.

It's pretty close to the old arcane warrior playstyle.

You know it should have occured to me they couldn't equip anything but staves due to the fact that the companions couldn't equip anything but what was in their class.

Any idea what Str level would be best to stop at for decent armors? Maybe around 20 something for dragon armor?

I will have to give the "battle mage" mentality a go I think..

Have some respect for yourselves, dudes.

If you want the return of the Arcane Warrior's ability to wear all armor and wield all weapons, here's a simple mod for you.

Also, it's easily possible to return full inventory for companions.

Don't even bother with looking into equiping warrior armor honestly. If you pick up Galvanism from the primal tree it increases Rock Armor to 150%, you'll have higher armor values than most warriors while wearing mage robes. Combine that with the upgraded Arcane Shield and you'll be tough as nails, and you can even have Barrier as a pseudo Stone Wall. Combine that with blood mage to make up for your reduced mana pool and force mage for the fortitude buff.

Arcane Warrior was my favourite in Origins too so i was dissapointed to find it had been removed from this one.

Im pretty sure the point is that people dont want to wear the lameass looking mage robes...the only one worth wearing is the champion armor that doesnt even look like a robe...and maybe the battlemage armor which is also pretty cool looking in my book. also, although you cant wield swords (even with the mod the animations are crap for casting) the staff of parlathan is effing bad@ss lookin and has a sword/spearesqe look to it. and if youget up close to an enemy you will hack and slash them with it like some sweet polearm...anyways the mod is awsome tho for wearing any heavy warr armor you want w/o wasting stats on strength, and if you take conduits advice with the build you will be nigh invincible!

I too was more than butthurt to see the AW class gone...with any luck, someone will make a mod adding a new AW spec. (considering we get a toolset that is)

I don't understand the dissapointment for the AW not being in DA2. It was by far the most imbalanced class in the first game and really a "no-brainer" class to play.

That is hardly the case atall...trying to manage mana usage as well as when to cast/not cast spells or turn on blood magic made it so much fun...i mean yeah it was almost impossible to die but so what, whats the point in playing a game to die? imo it was the most fun class in DAO...tanking like a beast while having spells at your disposal..whats not to love?
