Why is Sebastian DLC? Seriously?

Ok, I can see where Shale was not so bad as DLC, the only scene where she really MATTERED was if you took her to the Deep Roads.  Aside from that, there was no story reasons why you would need her.

However, Sebastian and his relationship withte Chantry and the Grand Cleric is very much shown throughout the game.  He's much more involved in the story than Shale was.

So, why was he made a DLC? Why not have an additional character for the DLC that isn't so obviously MISSING?

Sebastian is an improvement on what they started with Shale. He's not integral to the story, but rather, well integrated. I highly doubt that the story would have been lacking had he not been included. I'm sure somebody who didn't buy him or get him with the SE could tell you that.

what Story involvements are there for Sebastian? Aside from his personal Quests where the Grand Cleric gets additional lines, the only impact he makes on the Story is the Choice between him and Anders. At least that's all i remember right now.

He may not be integral but he interjects himself in quite a lot of the conversations. More than I can remember for Shale. I kept him in my party the whole game until the end. He just seems like he was built to be pretty important to the story.

Well I think there's no reason besides money why he wasn't in the game from the start. Look at the Signature Edition: Before the game was gold he was already announced, so he was in the original game just like Shale but was cut due to "time*cough money* restrainments".

He was finished before release, and was sold along side it. He should have been in retail, no excuses. DLC is continued support post release of a game. Its not selling the game one chapter at a time.

Shale had a much larger impact (with more party banter) in my DA:O games than Sebastian has had in my DA2 games. Perhaps I just haven't played enough with Sebastian in-party, I dunno, but as 'yet another Rogue' (especially when my PC was a Rogue) I much preferred Varric. I wouldn't have missed him at all, really, if I'd never picked him up.... :/

Pretty mmuch why I didn't bother getting him. I have a wise cracking dwarf rogue with an awesome crossbow.

Why would I want a stuck up human prince?

This pretty much sums up my thoughts on Sebastian.

I'm glad he was well integrated into the story... The DLC characters for ME2 had little impact on anything, which was disappointing. He is clearly optional though... None of his actions have a major impact on the story, and I doubt I'd miss him if I hadn't gotten him with the SE.

He was a ploy to get people to pre-order the game before the reviews came out.

It's pretty clear that he was intended as a companion the whole time. He appears in the Strategy Guide along with the other companions, quests, romance, the whole bit.

Would I pay $7 for him? Probably not.

Hmm yeah I guess he's not that important. But yeah, he is much more integrated than Shale was.

Sebastian was in the game (the Signature Edition) from the beginning. Happily, Bioware has provided the people who chose to not purchase the Signature Edition the option to immediately purchase him as DLC, instead of having to wait for an undefined time. :)

Well, yes.  Just like Shale was technically in the game since the beginning, all new copies got him free.  My point was, Sebastian seems to matter so much that if you didn't get the Signature edition, you're missing out... not like Zaeed (also Day 1 Free with New Copy DLC, like Shale) in Mass Effect 2.  Zaeed is one mission added, then after that he has a few unique lines, but 99% of the game he might as well not be there.  Same with Kasumi (as much as I love Kasumi).  However, Sebastian has much more to do with the entire storyline.

I wonder if Bioware will release any further character DLC for DA2. If so, I wonder whether they will be as fun and well integrated as Sebastian or if they'll be utter crap like Zaeed.

Because he was concepted and written after the rest of the game. It's great that you find him so integral-- when we considered what kind of additional companion we could include, our idea was that someone who put a bit more focus on the Chantry (and Elthina in particular) could potentially work really well.

But insofar as "missing" a la cut from the rest of the game-- no, that's simply not the case.

So the game was finished the day the SE was announced? Because how could you otherwise advertise this character?
And another question: Who wrote him? I think he fits in quite nice with the rest of the cast.

And that worked out well. Elthina seemed like the only reasonable mind in a position of power - I'm not so sure if this would be as noticeable without the DLC. He isn't a character I use much, for now, but he and his quests add a lot to the game. Well done.

I'm not sure what you're asking. There was a point well into production where it was decided we would begin work on an additional party companion as DLC, something we could write and create as additional content but which could work on a different certification process than the main game (which takes much longer) but be otherwise seamless.

So there was nothing to "cut", it was always built as additional content.

And another question: Who wrote him? I think he fits in quite nice with the rest of the cast.

Jennifer Hepler wrote him.

Since Gaider seems to be reading this, how about next time you throw in a neutral or evil character? Sebastian wasn't useful to me at all because of his attitude. Or maybe because of my attitude... lol. He was a well-designed character, but I didn't really like his nagging and anti-mage stance. DLC should be appealing to everybody, not just good guys and Chantry-supporters.

Sebastion is like Shale.  So awesome you can't imagine playing the game without them.  I took Sebastion, Aveline, and Anders on my Holy Rolla's Playthough.  My faithful Andrastians annoyed Anders both endlessly and hilariously.  Not only does he have a great story, but the voice acting was great.

How about a New rule.
DLC can never be sewed in with the anything relating to the main story.
So people do not feel like they are missing out.
Or do you want people to feel that way?
Hrm....At the peak of tolerance for games that look to make most of their money from DLCs.
Soon SOoon my money is staying in my pocket for main games.
Too bad for me.Missing out.I will still have money at the very least.

I found that the black imporium is like shale in terms of how it is aquired.
And Sebastion is more like Witch hunt in terms of Content from what people say.
