I don't know if this was mentioned (i skimmed, sue me.) but as I recall Shale was a raging pain in the butt to incorporate back into the game.
So one reason Sebastian feels more involved than Shale would probably be because of the lessons they learned with Shale.

He's a nice extra to the game but I feel it runs fine without him. I honestly forgot he was there for most of it, until of course he provided me with laughs at his dramatic cries at the end.
Of course by then I realised I had opened myself up to more war and enemies by having bought the man in the first place.
Bring it on Sebastian, bring. it. on.

Yeah, I know that Warden's Keep IS integrated into DA2.  If you let Avernus live you help deliver a message from him to the Grey Wardens (and get an elixir that gives you extra attribute points) or if you killed him but let Sophia go, there is a quest where she's wreaking havoc on the coast, and you get to go do what the Warden should have done.

How so? Shale seemed to work good for me, especially in The Anvil of the Void quest.

Because he was DESIGNED to be a DLC. The writers/developers designed a game that, storywise, would stand on it's own.

It doesn't matter when the DLC was ready. Bioware gave you a complete game without any DLC. They also gave you the option to add some NON-CRITICAL content as seasoning to an already served dish.

Was it a business decision to have a non-essential character as DLC? YES.

Does it matter if Seb was finished before or after the main game? NO.

Was he cut content from the main game? NO.

Is the game a complete experience without Seb? YES.

Does Seb adds EXTRA depth to the story? YES.

Is that EXTRA content worth 7 dollars? YOUR CHOICE.

And most importantly: Had DLC content not been prevalent in the gaming industry today, would Sebastian be written at all? NO.

Oh wow! I was super skeptical of what you were saying until you said it in caps!

The bolded part is the part I take issue with. If true, I'd agree with all of the conclusions you drew. It isn't true, sadly, Dragon Age 2 has cut-corners everywhere you look, and the entire third act is a half-assed mess (for full details, see my thread and the others like it that explain in depth why it sucks so hard) that needed to be more or less entirely re-worked.

You not liking the game doesn't make it incomplete, Ever.

Well, I for one am glad he exists. He's my favorite LI in the game, mostly because he's the only one I can be reasonably sure won't slit my throat in my sleep.

Not that the others aren't fun. But sometimes you just want a little stability, you know?

Which is perhaps meaningless to you, particularly since some people insist on seeing a conspiracy. The fact remains, however, that if it were not for DLC then Sebastian would never have existed at all.

A very misleading argument.  The issue is not that Seb is DLC, but that it's DLC that costs money.

Comparisons with Shale are also retarded - Shale came with all bought copies of the game, Seb only comes with the pre-order-before-random-date-3-months-before-release copy.

It's sickening to see DLC that costs money released on day one.

Generally customers hate feeling like they've been had. That's what Day One DLC always feels like. It feels like they were cheated out of something. People feel that way because there have been games like that. I know for a fact that some of the Tomb Raider: Underworld DLC was cut out of the game (and was actually on the disk but had to be unlocked). For Underworld I think it was an artist or someone who came forward and said that the DLC was pulled out of the game specifically for DLC.

Events like that jaded gamers in general. And the fact that some of Seb's dialogue and moments were already on the disk made the already cynical fan (and there's a ton of them in any fanbase) more cynical.

However, you have to look at DLC as a business.

Strickly speaking, how many play-throughs does DA2 have for you? Me? I'm thinking my 3rd will be my last, at least for a good while. Most people will not go to a second playing. Some people will never finish the game. That's true about all games.

So the life this game has can be measured in weeks and maybe months. DLC has a small window of opprotunity to sell well and after that the market for it has dried up.

Think about GTA4. Big expensive game that made a lot of money. Retailers later got swamped as people sold the game back to outlets and the price for that game dropped big time. Rockstar had two big DLCs in the wings and by the time The Lost and Damned came out a lot of people had sold their GTA4 games.

The same with Ballad of Gay Tony. I've since heard that the two DLCs have gone on to sell really well since hitting shelves as a stand-alone game without the need to have GTA4.

So BioWare only has a few weeks or months where people are going to be really interested in DLC. After that they risk too much of the fan base not caring or actually no longer having the game. And it's not like 100% of the people who buy the game will ever buy DLC either.

I respect the desire and need to have DLC out early. But I also understand why some people would be putting tin-foil hats on and screaming that BioWare's watering down their beer in order to make an extra buck off you.

I got him for free with the Signature Edition so it doesn't bother me.
